1921 Alabama Half Dollar, no 2 x 2. MS-64. A frosty, well struck example of this scarcer Commemorative half dollar, with the little 2X2 in the field pointing out the fact that Alabama entered the union in 1819 as the 22nd state. If it was admitted in 1819, then why does this 100th anniversary of statehood commemorative bear the year 1921? Students of government committees can provide you the answer.

Lot 306
1892 Columbian Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Beautifully toned on each side. Intensely lustrous surfaces throughout. The surfaces display attractive toning. A piece of special beauty (PCGS # 9296) .

When the plaster model for the reverse of the Columbian half dollar arrived, chief engraver Charles Barber labeled it as "uncoinable," but he evidently turned it over to George T. Morgan for copying. The artist who drew the design must have used the Spanish reproduction of the Santa Maria for copying but Morgan improved on this by using a photograph of the ship -- while preserving the same "ship on wheels" layout, with the divided date of 1492, and the stars flanking date 1892.

Lot 315
1936 Lynchburg Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. A sparkling gem of the finest order. The luster is unbeatable underneath the toning, which happens to be all original and from the issue holder; advancing further along the quality scale, the strike is clearly full, being quite crisp in all areas. This piece depicts Carter Glass, a standard-issue politician of the day whose influence was strong enough to win him a place on the nation's coinage (why not Henry Ford or Thomas Edison?). Such nice original multicolor toning excites many commemorative coin collectors. In an old NGC holder. Worth a premium for the holder (PCGS # 9324) .

Lot 316
1920 Maine Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 PQ. Old holder. Nice original toning on both sides. Keen-edged devices throughout, including the tree at the center of the coat of arms which on some strikes is weakly impressed.

The state of Maine celebrated its centenary anniversary in Portland, the state capital. Representative John A. Peters submitted a sketch of the coin and Anthony de Francisci (Peace Dollar designer) made the original models from the sketch. Either George T. Morgan or John R. Sinnock completed the dies from the Peters/de Francisci design. For the obverse, Peters used the state seal, with a tight pine wreath on the reverse, Maine being the "Pine Tree State." Of 50,000 struck, a number were released into circulation as unsold, accounting for those seen in Very Fine and Extremely Fine condition.
Estimated Value $250 - 350.

1934 Maryland Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. National toning on both sides. This lovely choice example is bathed in pleasing toned luster, but we are hard pressed to find even a single carbon fleck or deep abrasion. Excellent sharpness on all devices, which also puts it near the head of the line, since Marylands tend to have flat faces and nose on the portrait (PCGS # 9328) .

Lot 318
1938 New Rochelle Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Old holder. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides. The otherwise silvery hue provides support for the natural patina. Meanwhile, the coin is a solidly graded example, a coin with above-average striking definition for a New Rochelle from this 1938 issue.

New Rochelle, New York was settled in 1688 by French Huguenots from La Rochelle, France. The obverse displays a protesting calf being delivered in payment of "one fatt calfe on every fouer and twentyth day of June Yearly and Every Year forever" according to the conditions laid down in the land sale to the Huguenots. The reverse has as its central theme an idealized fleur-de-lis which has been the symbol of France ever since 1180 AD Gertrude K. Lathrop designed the coin. Issue price was $2 each with a net mintage of 15,251 plus 50 presentation specimens struck from a single blow on a proof planchet using polished dies.
Estimated Value $450 - 500.

1937 Roanoke Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Fabulous multi-color toning on the obverse. The silvery luster on both sides is full with a somewhat satin texture and is covered in toning like you will rarely see on this Roanoke Type. This is a decidedly well-struck example with good details, like most. It has no bothersome abrasions or points of tarnish, as is often the case, nor did the dies leave behind a less than rigid impression in the centers. A delightful gem! And worth a premium for the toning. Old holder.

1925 Stone Mountain Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely shades of gold toning on the obv. the equestrian figures on the obverse depict, respectively, General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson and General Robert e. Lee. Curiously, and a first on a U.S. coin, the thirteen stars around allude to the thirteen seceding Southern states that launched the nation into civil strife in 1861, not the original colonies (PCGS # 9378) .

Lot 327
1934 Texas Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Delicately toned. A well struck, lustrous example. Texas is the Lonestar State, which is why the 5-pointed star is prominently displayed with the eagle. (A single star was part of the Long Expedition (1819), Austin Colony (1821) and several flags of the early Republic of Texas. Some say that the star represented the wish of many Texans to achieve statehood in the United States. Others believe it originally represented Texas as the lone state of Mexico which was attempting to uphold its rights under the Mexican Constitution of 1824. At least one "lone star" flag was flown during the Battle of Concepcion and the Siege of Bexar (1835). So there you have it.) (PCGS # 9381) .
