Lot 2227
Great Britain. Pound of Twenty Shillings, ND. S.2534; Fr-214. Elizabeth I, 1558-1603. Fifth coinage issue. Old bust of Queen facing left with elaborate dress and profusion of hair. Reverse crowned shield, E R at sides. The crisp mint mark (woolpack) indicates that the coin was struck between 1594 and 1596. Extremely Fine.

The Pound is perhaps the most attractive of all the gold coins of the Tudor period. Although this specimen has been lightly cleaned it does not detract from the over all appearance. Beautifully struck up, on a large flan with a light orange tone and some original luster, this is an excellent example. Although the first English 'milled' coins were produced in a screw press (by Eloye Mestrelle) early in Elizabeth's reign, the Pound pieces were struck by hand, using the old method. It is therefore surprising that what is essentially a crudely made coin has such a wealth of detail.
The period 1594 to 1596 was a relatively peaceful one in England. Mary, Queen of Scots had been executed in 1587, the threat from the invading Spanish Armada had been obliterated in 1588, and Queen Elizabeth's authority was now unquestioned. In 1594 Henry IV was crowned King of France at Rheims and John Haynes, the Massachusetts colonial magistrate was born. Sir Martin Frobisher the British explorer died. In 1595 William Shakespeare wrote 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and his play 'Romeo and Juliet' was performed for the first time. In 1596 Edward Winslow, the American Pilgrim leader, was born and Sir Francis Drake died. Diego de Montemayor founded the Mexicancity of Monterrey. Meanwhile, back in England, the Tudor era was drawing to a close.

Great Britain. 5 Guineas, 1726. S.3626; Fr-325. George I, 1714-1727. Laureate head of King facing right. Reverse: Sceptres and shields. Regnal year (DECIMO TERTIO) on edge in raised letters. A nice glossy example with an unusual absence of surface marks or knocks. George I Fine Guineas are the rarest - only the patterns of the reign of King George III are rarer. Nearly Extremely Fine.

George I was born in 1660 and his parents were the Elector of Hanover and Sophia, the granddaughter of King James I of England (James VI of Scotland). He came to the English throne because Parliament preferred him to James Edward Stuart - the half-brother of Queen Anne. He could not however speak English and spent over half his reign in Germany.
