Morgan Dollars 1884-1921 & Groups

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1867
1892-O Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely white example. Both the eye-appeal and satiny luster on this large type coin are simply outstanding, and only the presence of a few scattered field abrasions precludes a higher rating. Given the proper amount of strike pressure, the coin would have been fully brought up by the dies. However, there are a few soft areas that are often encountered on this date, including the breast feathers on the eagle as well as the hair over the ear on Liberty. Pop 61; 4 in 66; none finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7216) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.

1892-S. NGC graded AU-58. Well struck and untoned. Popular key date. Only 1.2 million Morgan Dollars were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1892, and many of these immediately were paid out into circulation. The mintage itself makes an unusual tidbit, for every month of the year saw an identical 100,000 coins struck. Nearly all known examples today are well worn. In grades below Extremely Fine, the 1892-S is a plentiful and readily affordable issue. Those coins that grade Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated are much scarcer and far more expensive, with this lovely About Uncirculated 58 example on the cusp of Mint State condition. The coin gains immensely from this situation (PCGS # 7218) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,500.

1892-S Morgan Dollar. NGC graded AU-55. A satiny coin with ample surface luster remaining of the most advantageous order for a collector of rare date dollars. Its high degree of choice surface pulses beneath smooth, relatively mark-free highlights. Nicely struck, too, for this scarce date, with outstanding detail throughout. The only friction seems to be on the topmost hair curls and tip of the cap, etc (PCGS # 7218) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 7,000.

1893. NGC graded Proof 63 Cameo. Flashy white cameo dollar. Powerfully burning proof surface explodes like a fire storm around the satiny, largely brilliant devices of this very choice specimen. A flicker of light golden amber highlights the outer margin, with comparable splashes on the reverse. Struck with technical exactness throughout as on just about every Proof of this year, with nearly 100% crisp detail in the hair, although a couple of the hair strands are merged over the ear. Proof mintage in 1893 was 792 pieces. Pop 27.

1893-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice white example. Bidders will see several choice to gem quality Mint State Carson City mint dollars in this important section of Morgan Dollars, and the present near-Gem 1893-CC is exceptionally well struck for what is often a softly struck date. The obverse and reverse centers are free of noticeable lack of detail, and every feature seems to shimmer with a frosty-white glow. Minimally abraded, as is suitable for the grade. Pop 371; 7 in 65.   1893-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice white coin. Eye-catching satin luster cascades from top to bottom on the untoned silver surfaces. And while a blunt impression was left by the recoil of the dies that struck this, but only at the ear and eagle's breast, elsewhere the strike, like the eye-catching mint bloom, is utterly gorgeous, and thoroughly outstanding!   1893-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Fully white example. An incredible array of luster supports bright silvery iridescent and cartwheel highlights. Nicely struck, though a marginally rounded impression was left by the stamp of the dies at centers, mainly in the hair waves at the hear. There are only a few widely spaced bagmarks hindering an even higher grade, which at first appraisal this coin should deserve. Pop 371; 7 in 65 (PCGS # 7222) .

1893-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. Mostly white. A lustrous example of this scarce year that has shimmering wintry blast of white surfaces. Desirable with this meticulous strike, only a couple of the hair strands are folded together due to a few tons (our of 150 tons per square inch) of inadequate die pressure. 1893-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Old green holder. Lustrous fields ripple with original mint bloom all silvery and resonating. Against this are set nicely subdued, matte design elements which have a frosted texture. A unsuccessful strike was left by the rebound of the dies that coined this '93-CC, whereby the centers are typically indistinct in the hair waves and on the eagle's breast feathers. Nice frosty white example (PCGS # 7222) .

Lot 1877
1893-O Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice white coin. Semi reflective surfaces. This piece displays attractive snow-white color over the nearly abrasion-free surfaces. Sometimes on this issue, the devices that were left by the dies are short of the required precision due to weak die pressure at the centers, we find that to be the case here, but everything else is finely detailed, including the eagle's wings. Pop 75; 9 in 65. (PCGS # 7224) .

As 1893 began, the American economy fell into a deep depression. Many lost their jobs, banks closed and business quickly folded. The need for new coinage fell too, with orders falling to a fraction of previous years during better economic times. Also, the returning Cleveland administration decided to close the Carson City mint as an economy measure, much to the chagrin of the mint workers who lost their jobs right in the middle of the darkest times. What few Morgan dollars were coined likely sat around in vaults, only to be scooped up in 1918 to be melted under the Pittman Act. Hence, this date is quite rare and very difficult to find in choice MS64 condition.

Lot 1886
1894 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Wonderful white gem. After several years of softly struck Proofs in the early 1890s, the mint put its nose to the grindstone in 1894 and struck 972 sharp Proof coins. These handsome rarities are popular and avidly sought by collectors not only because of their clear strikes but also because of the scarcity and date demand created by the short supply of high grade business strike 1894 dollars.

This coin presents surfaces that are bright white, sparkling and gleaming throughout with no distracting impairments on either side. This is what one would expect given the near-perfect grade Proof 67! The superb fields are deeply mirrored while, in contrast, there is a significant amount of mint frost enveloping the devices to create a true blessed cameo effect. Pop 15; 7 finer.

Lot 1888
1894 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. A well struck example of the low mintage date. A hint of light golden toning around the edges. Morgan dollar production continued its rapid decline at the Philadelphia Mint through 1894, when only 110,000 business strikes emerged from the presses this year. Although several bags of 1894 dollars were released from federal holding in the 1950s and 1960s, this issue's mintage ceiling guarantees its status as the rarest Philadelphia mint Morgan dollar in Mint State after the 1901. The strike on the obverse of this handsome Mint State 64 is above average, yet not bold, while the reverse is considerably sharper over the eagle's breast feathers. Both sides are fully satiny with a modest glow in the fields. Pop 166; 17 in 65; 3 in 66. (PCGS # 7228) .

1894-O Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Well struck and a nice white coin. Very close to Mint State 65. Lustrous, mint-frosty surfaces put on a show with their rich dislay and silvery iridescence, the overall appearance greatly reinforced by cartwheel luster. Regarding this date, 1894-O tends to be poorly struck in the centers. This example, on the other hand, is fully struck in most areas with pinpoint detailing on the hair and wings, but some unconvincing roundness here and there, including mainly the few strands of hair crossing the high point of the obverse above Liberty's ear. 1902-S Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely gold and light blue toning. Semi reflective surfaces. In stark contrast to the typically offered 1902-S silver dollar, this frosty Gem is relatively free of grade-diminishing bagmarks. The central obverse is a tad softly defined, but the balance of the features are nicely struck. The centers present a soft satiny appearance within a thin overlay of toning iridescence.

The San Francisco Mint's delivery of Morgan dollars in 1902 amounted to 1.5 million pieces. This total is on the minimal side for a mass-produced series, and the '02-S is scarce in both worn as well as Gem Mint State grades. Hoard coins at the San Francisco Mint and in the Redfield Estate explain the relatively availability of lower quality Uncirculated examples, with most Redfield pieces dipped-white in color (PCGS # 7282) .
