Lot 1294
1850-O $20 Liberty. PCI graded MS-62. Lightly cleaned. We also note some faint hairlines when held to an angle under a light source. Our grade of AU-58 seems quite appropiate given the amount of strike detail, the areas of smooth luster, and the overall appearance. Stars and main devices are detailed, although show a little weakening in the beaded edge of the coronet on which is inscribed LIBERTY.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.

1850-O $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55. Well struck with some luster visable. A few marks on the cheek and in the nearby fields. A satiny matte-like specimen with strong underlying luster around the main devices as well as stretching out far into the fields on both sides. Nicely struck too including sharp stars and sharp hair curls on Liberty. Pop 13; 4 in AU58; none higher at PCGS. (PCGS # 8903) .

1851. PCGS graded MS-62. Well struck and frosty. Light even gold toning. A few minor obverse hairlines and some minute spots on the face and obverse field. There is a lovely interplay between yellowish to orange-gold and reddish colors that give this the eye appeal of an even higher grade. Devices as "sharp as a two-edged sword" on all stars as well as Liberty's hair waves and hair bun. A strikingly beautiful matte-finish coin for the grade. Pop 30; 13 in 63; 2 in 64. (PCGS # 8904) .

1852-O $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. Light golden toning. Luster still evident. A few little ticks on the cheek but far fewer than average for this important O-mint strike. A satiny coin whose lightly toned fields display ample lustrous around the main devices. Graceful underlying luster supports pale orange to brownish gold iridescence. A pleasing example of the 1852-O date, not fully struck, perhaps, but with enough detail in the head, stars, and eagle area of the reverse to easily support this higher-end grade. Pop 31; 11 higher. 1855-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Such was the flood of gold issuing from the Sierra Nevada foothills that the gold rush "rushed" the federal government to establish a Western mint, the first one authorized. San Francisco began producing double eagles in 1854 and continued with large mintage in 1855, the year of t his handsome, lustrous coin. In later days, many of these were returned for melting. This is a nicely struck example exhibiting fine detail to all the high points and star radials. The scarcity of this date is quickly revealed in the statistics: Pop 8; 3 in 63; none finer at PCGS. 1857 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. This is a very special 1857 double eagle and not the commonly seen S-mint issue from the S.S. Central America hoard. The strike deserves an A-rating, since all devices were struck with such force and determination by the dies that elements show with razor-edge detail. Furthermore, the centers have warm golden orange patina expanding outwards to the same balanced color and freshness all the way to the edge of the rim. A well struck MS62 that has imposing luster and excellent "eye appeal" surfaces. Pop 14; 3 in 63. None finer by PCGS. (PCGS # 8920) .

1858 $20 Liberty. SEGS graded MS-62. A bold, needle sharp strike. Slightly prooflike with scattered light hairlines due to an old cleaning. The grade is appropiate with the afforementined hairlines.

In 1858 the recently cobbled-together Republican Party named Lincoln its candidate for the U.S. Senate seat then held by Stephen Douglas, author of the doctrine of popular sovereignty. The debates Lincoln and Douglas held that fall would receive national attention, and turn Lincoln into a serious contender for the Republican Party's 1860 presidential bid.

In a speech delivered on June 17, 1858, at the close of the Republican State Convention, Lincoln caught the mood of many in the North who were increasingly concerned about the morality of slavery on the one hand, and the need to keep freed slaves from competing with immigrant jobs and so lowering wages in the big northern cities. (Northerners were, in many instances, more bigoted and fearful of the end of slavery than the populace of the South.) Though the "house divided" phrase had been used frequently before as political pabulum for the masses, it was this speech of Lincoln's fiery oratory that gave currency and familiarity to the phrase and the idea.

1859-O $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50. Only 9100 struck semi-reflective surfaces. Pop 7; 17 finer. Nice golden toning. Another rare date in outstanding condition. The surfaces show very few handling marks, as do virtually none of the other coins from this Mint, which shows that the New Orleans double eagles circulated especially hard, just like the Ccs that commenced coinage in 1870. Smooth golden orange finish is the rule here, yet these were not saved, but spent for needed supplies of life, an activity that led directly to this date's rarity. To preserve such a coin in this condition was a matter of chance, which may explain why the Breen encyclopedia estimated that 99 percent of these were melted, lost or simply disappeared. A coin that deserves special attention and a solid bid (PCGS # 8927) .

1861-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Lustrous surfaces with nice golden toning. A few light abrasions on the cheek, although the light brown lines seen in the color photo arises from hairlines on the NGC slab, not on the coin itself. (Several of the pieces from one consignment came to us in scruffy NGC or PCGS holders; we tried to photograph them as best we could, but bidders will understand that sometimes the lines and scratches on the holders just had to be there in the end photos.) 1867 $20 Liberty. ICG graded AU-55. Untoned and semi prooflike. This is a popular date with collectors, and one of the few issues from the 1860s easily found in Mint condition or high-quality AU from a small hoard distributed into the marketplace way back when. Typical bagmarks are encountered on the portrait, in the field and on the eagle, abut all are consistent with the grade. The fields sparkle with brilliance.

1867-S $20 Liberty. AU-50. A small nick at the throat where another coin socked it most inappropriately, but this hasn't offended Miss Liberty whose strong profile and traces of luster point to only a short time in circulation. Not particularly rare as a date, since the mint struck large numbers of double eagles for international payments transactions, yet just the same, the collector of Type 2 $20 gold will enjoy its finer qualities.

Lot 1311
1869-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Lovely golden even toning. Here is a very rare Type 2 San Francisco mint issued twenty for the collector to find in this choice Mint State grade. The surfaces are simply terrific for this usually dull and bagmarked date, since most other double eagles made in 1869 were heavily handled, circulated, or shipped abroad; they are nearly always found in miserable states of preservation when Uncirculated, or in circulated condition. Note the beauty of Liberty's facial profile and the surrounding fields, whose smooth contours show just trivial scuffs and a few minute tics, unlike the heavily scratched surfaces of others. Clear-cut devices point to it having been giving a decent, but not quite full strike by the dies. Weakness occurs at these few locations only: the obverse stars but not the pearls lining the coronet; while the reverse impresses us with its near perfection of strike and near gem quality luster. Examination of the reverse fails to find a fault, in fact, and this portion of the coin would probably grade even higher on its own, as we alluded to. This coin is identifiable by a tiny nick crossing the lower portion of the N in TWENTY and a tiny scratch below the first obverse star. As to rarity, that is where this beautiful 1869-S twenty really shines. The combined NGC and PCGS Population reports show a total of four coins graded this high, with none seen higher by either service. Obviously, this coin is a contender for the finest known of the date, and such quality is highly coveted by most serious collectors. Expect a battle for this coin when it crosses the block. Pop 5; none finer at PCGS or NGC. PCGS #6586960 (PCGS # 8956) .

1872-CC $20 Liberty. SEGS graded AU-58. Cleaned. Signs of old polishing on the reverse. Our grade is AU53.

In a period in which very few Mint State coins are known (this being true of the 1872-CC eagle as well) the collector is offered a high-end AU example which we have net-graded as AU-53, actually a choice coin at this level since few have been classified at better.

The mintage of the 1872-CC $20 amounted to just 26,900 pieces. Most depositors in those far off days preferred the easier-to-count $20 denomination but chose to send their gold across the mountain range to San Francisco, instead, for the better smelting fees than Carson City Mint could offer. Of that figure, we estimate the vast majority no longer exist, with the typically encountered specimen apt to grade an ugly Very Fine. The early coins of the Carson City Mint, especially those of 1870 through 1872 in all denominations and the smaller denominations for a time after that, seem to have been roughly handled in circulation. In addition, these pieces wore rapidly, and over a period of time most were melted or otherwise disappeared. Very few were ever exported.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,500.

1873-CC $20 Liberty. SEGS graded MS-60. A lustrous and frosty mint example with faint hairlines from light cleaning, plus a noticeable X scratch on the face of Liberty. Our grade is sharpness of MS60 lightly cleaned. A rare coin in this high state of preservation. The 1873-CC double eagle is scarce enough in any grade to make a collector envious of the next owner of this coin. Although 22,410 were struck, this is a very rare date in higher grades, especially above Extremely Fine, hence a double eagle specialist will soon find this date to be quite a challenge if he misses this opportunity to strike before this "CC" gold offering disappears.

1876-S $20 Liberty. SEGS graded Type 2 MS-64. A well struck example and quite choice. No serious marks or scratches, just some faint hairlines from light cleaning. This year marks the last in which the Liberty $20 was produced with the reverse denomination spelled TWENTY D. The San Francisco mint's delivery of 1876 is one of the more readily obtainable issues in the Type II Double Eagle series, but it is rarer at or above the Mint State level than many would suppose. All 1876-S Twenties that are extant in Mint State 64 are solidly within the Condition Census for the issue, and they are currently unsurpassed in beauty or desirability.

An exceptionally well-preserved example of both the type and the issue, as mentioned, this fresh Mint State 64 example is sharply struck from the dies. Luster is full, pulsating, and displays a satin-to-softly frosted texture that flickers from rim-to-rim. The color is a key element, and mostly pale-gold in shade and quite enjoyable to gaze upon.

1890-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Nice light orange toning.
