Lot 731
1895-O Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck and mostly white. Some tone near the date. At the time this O-mint quarter was made in 1895, America was being led by a beefy, 300-pound gentle giant of a President, Grover Cleveland. As politicians go, Mr. Cleveland was somewhere in-between when it came to skullduggery and job peddling. He had a conservative bent, though, which surfaced in his clashes with followers of the rabble-rouser William Jennings Bryan. Cleveland believed a gold standard to be the only honest standard. Unfortunately, soon after he gained office, the economy took a nose-dive and there was a run on the Treasury's gold, which reached a crisis in 1895. The Treasury came within a day or two of running out of gold! Pop 11; 34 finer. (PCGS # 5611) .

1897 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Well struck and white. A heart-stopping Gem Proof 67 of the premium quality one likes to see for this actively collected Barber design. Swirling cartwheel frost on the devices blends naturally with the deep mirror glow surrounding the satin surfaces. The comparison between the two is what gives late 19th century Proofs their ethereal quality and sharp relief. Only 731 proofs issued. Pop 6; 5 finer.

1897 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Well struck and white. Basically silver-white for all intents and purposes. The few wispy hairlines on Liberty's cheek do not detract from the overall pleasing eye appeal of this Gem Cameo Proof. Only 731 proofs issued. Pop 11; 11 finer.

1898 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Only 735 proofs issued. A nice white coin. One would be hard pressed to locate a more pristine 1898, even if one were known to either NGC or PCGS (and there are a few higher-grade examples reported, if truth be told, but we're dealing with this gentleman's coin, and it is a superb one). The richly frosted devices, rotating white mirrors, like summer lightning, provide a surge of unimpeded mint contrast with splendid cameo-like qualities. The coin also has the advantage of a very convincing sharp impression. Pop 21; 8 finer.

1901 Barber Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66. Mostly white with a cameo effect although not called a cameo on the holder. A one-in-a-hundred example of this typical "all brilliant" issue, with abundant luster that shimmers over pristine devices. A blunt impression is sometimes left by the recoil of the dies that struck this year's coinage; just the same, we can report that this gorgeous Proof 66 specimen, unlike the others, is outstanding in its detail and sharpness, as well as the overall visual impact that it gives. 813 proofs minted. 1903 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Blazing white gem. Virtually ice-white in the fields and on the devices. Substantial detail to the highpoints on this almost miraculous example, with a thorough and effectual imprint from the dies; there are no weak areas left by the recoil of the dies, none whatsoever, no spots or other impairment. 1903 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Fully white gem. Only 755 proofs struck. The surfaces range from silvery to hard white frost depending upon whether you're talking about the fields or devices. A lustrous and nicely struck bright Gem. In keeping with the mint's quality production, this coin displays impressive striking definition for a Barber quarter from this early part of the 20th century. Which is also to say that the strike is full, including those few hair strands over Liberty's brow which often keep this from the razor-sharpness collectors prefer on their coins. Pop 10; 16 finer.

1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-63 Full Head. Brilliant white. Swirling frosty luster rounds out this choice coin's list of memorable attributes. Given the proper amount of strike pressure, the coin would have been fully brought up by the dies. However, there are a few soft areas that are often encountered on 1916 standing Liberty quarter dollars, including Liberty's shield and head, but these are minor drawbacks, given 1916's extremely low mintage. 1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62 Full Head PQ. White and frosty. Here, we are pleased to describe a very choice 1916 standing Liberty quarter whose smooth cartwheel luster adorns the faint toned surfaces. Reasonable detail with perhaps minor weakness to the shield and body elements of Liberty. Just the same the coin is splendidly beautiful for the date, this issue is from a unique hub-die association where the design elements are soft, almost impressionistic in their relief. For some reason, the mint reworked the master hub extensively for the 1917 Type 1 pieces, leaving the 1916 not only the key date in the series (52,000 mintage), but also technically a one-year variety because of the changes introduced the next year. The standing Liberty quarter was "intended to typify in a measure the awakening interest of the country to its own protection," Mint Director von Engelken said at the time the coins first appeared early in 1917. "In the new design Liberty is shown a full-length figure, front view, with head turned toward the left, stepping forward to the gateway of the country #The left arm of the figure of Liberty is upraised, bearing the shield in the attitude of protection, from which the covering is being drawn. 1918-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. 8 over 7. PCGS graded MS-63. Nice untoned example. This is one of the grand rarities of the last century; it so happens, few overdates were created then, and all are eagerly sought by collectors. Perhaps one thousand of these exist, mainly well circulated, the grading services having seen slightly more than 500 in all grades. For this reason, it is likely that more are out there sitting in coin albums, having been purchased decades ago. This one has the minute diagnostic features noted in the Breen Encyclopedia. The overdate is plain, clear and crisp with or without a glass of sherry. Apparently in the hurry to get dies made, one 1918 die received a strike from the 1917 master hub, then the hub was replaced with the correct 1918 hub, and the die was imprinted again, creating an 8 over 7 error date! No one noticed the mistake, or if they did, they drank a glass of sherry, winked once or twice, and told no one about it. The die was then shipped off and put into production at the San Francisco Mint, where no one there noticed it, either, much to the amusement of collectors!

1918-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. 8 over 7. NGC graded AU-55. Very lightly toned. This is one of the classic rarities of the 20th century. Few overdates were created, and auction appearances are eagerly followed by collectors. Perhaps one thousand of these exist, the grading services have seen slightly more than 500 in all grades. This lustrous coin with its splendid "old silver" patina, has the minute diagnostics noted in the Breen Encyclopedia. The overdate feature is plain with a glass. Apparently in the rush to get dies prepared, one 1918 was struck by a 1917 master hub and then a 1918 hub (during die making, it takes several blows by the hub to impress the design into the hard die steel.

While the famous low mintage 1916 traditionally gets all the applause as the key to the standing Liberty series, examples of 1916 were saved in greater numbers, since Gems are usually available. The 1918-S overdate, on the contrary, is almost never offered in Mint condition, with a choice About Uncirculated specimen the preferred condition for a date set of these attractive quarter dollars.
