Lot 679
1807 Draped Bust Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-60 PQ. Browning-1. Boldly struck and nice even toning on both sides. All 1807 quarters (140,343 mintage) were from one of a pair of dies, the first with large date and stars (5 berries in the branch, B-2) and this second with small date and stars (4 berries, B-1). A hard to believe array of luster supports smooth frosty highlights underneath the toning. Nicely struck with the design comparable to the best preserved MS60 or better specimens of this date, including Liberty's central hair curls and the eagle's breast feathers. Struck from lightly clashed dies. Pop 4; 32 finer. (PCGS # 5316) .

The satiny toned surfaces are afire with bright volatile cartwheel luster underneath the russet brown patina, luster that looks as though it would like nothing better than to explode with a loud bang. Well struck for the date and easily matching or surpassing the few others in this superlative condition. Pop 5; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 5322) .

1838 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. No Drapery. Light golden toning. This is one of the shortest-lived types in the entire Seated Quarter series of 1838-1891. Examples without extra folds of drapery at Liberty's elbow were made solely in 1838 and 1839 at the Philadelphia Mint, with a single 1840-dated issue from New Orleans. This No Drapery design differs from the following Drapery design in other regards, most noticeably the proportions of Liberty's figure and the size of the rock upon which she sits. Faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies, with only marginal softness found at the stars. Attractive color. Pop 20; 31 better. (PCGS # 5391) .

1859 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Well struck and white. An understandably bright and lively gem with intense frosted relief and a bold strike. The grade is accurate down to the finest point with no criticism whatever about this coin's fresh appearance. Everything you would want from the grade, and probably then some; the 1859 No Motto is much scarcer than dates in the 1860s or 1870s, which is why we might see a scramble among bidders to acquire it. 1859 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice strike with even toning on both sides. Pop 15; 9 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5448) .

The most newsworthy event of 1859 took place on the 16th of October that year when John Brown lead an armed group of 21 men to seize the arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. The actions of Brown's men brought national attention to the emotional divisions concerning slavery. He was captured, tried, and executed.

This was not Brown's first run-in with the law. Three years before, on Pottawotamie Creek, on the night of May 24, 1856, Brown and his sons murdered five men who supported slavery, although none actually owned slaves. Brown and his sons escaped. Brown spent the next three years seeking contributions from wealthy abolitionists in order to establish a colony for runaway slaves. To accomplish this, Brown needed weapons and decided to capture the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. The rest is history.

1860 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A fully white coin. Reasonable detail definition, especially to the all-important area at Liberty and the shield along with the eagle. Only a few of the stars are bluntly struck on this Gem specimen. Mathematically exact standards were not very common in those days, although the mint improved its Proof quality by the time the Barber coinage arrived in the 1890s. 1,000 proofs minted. 1864-S Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-68. NGC reports this one example with the next finest a sole MS-65 speciman. PCGS reports 3 in MS-64 with none higher. The description from the landmark offering of Louis E. Eliasberg Quarters sold nine years ago reads in part:

"A spectacular gem, virtual perfection, and probably the finest known. Satiny, lustrous surfaces with light gray and gold toning. Sharply struck and boldly defined in all areas. Broad rims with partial wire rim on obverse. 'Prohibitively rare Uncirculated' wrote Walter Breen in his 1988 Encyclopedia, and who can disagree? If a MS-60 coin is prohibitively rare, then what is a MS-66?

The present coin is undoubtedly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the connoisseur in the Liberty Seated series.

Die notes: Briggs 1-A. Obverse with date high and closer to the base of Liberty than to the dentils. The first two digits of the date (are) boldly repunched. Reverse with features particularly deeply impressed into the die, generating very bold peripheral lettering. The S mintmark, punched separately into the die, is somewhat lighter in relief and is interestingly rounded on the higher areas."

The only part of the Eliasberg catalog description that we would take exception to is the word "probably" in the first sentence. There is no probably to this extraordinary coin being the finest known. Only a handful of Uncirculated 1864-S Quarter exist and none have certified higher than MS64. Listed under the Eliasberg Gallery on the NGC website where it states "this coin simply defies belief." We concur. Population: 1 in 68, 0 finer

1886 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Well struck and a nice white coin. As expected from the grade, this is a satiny gem with dynamic frosted relief on both sides, plus not even a whisper of toning on its white surface. Just so you'll know life isn't any different in 21st century America with its Nanny government functionaries, in 1886, the year this quarter was sold, a Sheriff Hopkins entered the Yick Wo laundry in San Francisco. The sheriff had a warrant for the arrest of the owner. The warrant said he had broken the law. A San Francisco ordinance said that all laundries had to be operated in brick buildings. The Yick Wo laundry was in a wooden building, and wooden buildings were more vulnerable to fires. But there was one problem: of San Francisco's 320 laundries, 310 were in wooden buildings. Most of the laundries -- 240 of them -- were owned by Chinese residents.

Sheriff Hopkins, never one to overlook an opportunity, went on and arrested almost all the Chinese owners of laundries in wooden buildings! The Chinese launderers got together and sued the sheriff. The case was Yick Wo v. Hopkins. Law students in colleges today study that case, but most do not know that there never was a Yick Wo. Sheriff Hopkins assumed that the man who owned the Yick Wo laundry, and fought for his rights, was named Yick Wo. Actually, his name was Lee Yick. And he fought for his rights. Lee Yick'd him!

Lot 725
1892 Barber Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. 1,245 proofs issued. Well struck and white. An incredible gem of the finest order. Satiny frosted devices play host to robust mirrors, which are some of the flashiest we have seen offered on this or any other Proof Barber quarter. Like the other silver coins of this Type, the quarter dollars minted from 1892 to 1916 (Proofs were made in each year) were designed by Charles E. Barber. His initial B is found at the truncation of the neck of Liberty. For 1892, there are two varieties of the reverse: 1. Eagle's wing covers only half of E in UNITED. 2. Eagle's wing covers most of E. This is the second variety where the E is almost completely obscured by the wing tip. Pop 11; 8 finer.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

Lot 726
1892 Barber Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. Fully white coin. Only 1,245 struck. An example whose rich frosty white head of Liberty pulsates with an inner energy like atomic fission. What one sees usually on this mint's coinage, especially on the business strikes, is an unconvincing impression left by the recoil of the dies. Greatly to our pleasure and the bidders' enjoyment, on the other hand, that is not the case here, this is a knock-out razor-edge Proof. The coin is sharp, very sharp, in fact. Pop 5; 3 in 67 Cam. (PCGS # 85678) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

Lot 728
1894 Barber Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. A white gem. A worldly dose of heavy white luster enlivens the broad expanse of cheek on Liberty as well as blankets the eagle and all the tops of the letters in the legends on this cameo Proof. The fields are essentially immaculate, while the strike is bold enough to warrant special mention, even though sharp strikes are the rule with Barber quarter Proofs.Only 972 proofs struck. Pop 8; 3 in 67 Cam. (PCGS # 85680) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
