Blake, Eubie. 1883-1983) Songwriter and ragtime pianist. Autograph Letter Signed on "Eubie Blake Music" letterhead, 1p, 11"x8½", Brooklyn, NY, 1978 June 28. Fine. To Mrs. Ted Lewis, widow of the renowned bandleader and entertainer, saying that he has never been to Circleville, Ohio, but if he ever goes there, he will visit the Ted Lewis museum.

With an Original Pencil Sketch unsigned of a bare-chested male figure on a 5"x4" telephone message pad leaf. Gershwin was known for his famous telephone doodles.

Gershwin, George and Ira. Innovative songwriting brothers; George (1898-1937) was the composer and Ira (1896-1983) was the lyricist. Document Signed, 1 p, 11"x8½", Los Angeles, California, 1936 Dec. 3. Fine. Concerning the Gershwins agreement of employment with RKO Studios, Inc. "to the effect that you represent and declare that no agreement which you have made or now contemplate making with Samuel Goldwyn, Inc. Ltd. will conflict in any way with the services you may be required to render to us…." Both Gershwins signed in black ink. A paragraph below their signatures states that in the event RKO exercises their option, Samuel Goldwyn, Inc., Ltd. will not require the Gershwins "to render their services to us prior to the expiration of a sixteen (16) week period commencing on January 15, 1937." The vice presidents of both companies signed. Unfortunately, George would die the next year of a brain tumor.

Good; vertical fold through sketch and inscription, minor soiling, and mounting residue on verso, obscuring part of a letter by someone else.

Lehar, Franz (1870-1948) Hungarian composer of operettas; bandmaster of various Austrian regiments; conductor of Theatre an der Wien. Autograph Letter Signed "Franz" on both sides of a 3½"x5½" card, in German, n.p., n.d. Fine; three words are underlined in blue pencil for emphasis. To "Dear Friend," noting that "Mitislaw" and "Zigeunerliebe" will be performed on the same evening and that parts will be cut. He adds, "Please lend…[Louis] Treumann's costumes to the Ischl Theatre" and mentions conductor (Robert) Stolz. Nice content. With translation and image of Lehar. The consignor has owned this letter since 1973.

Liszt" as Kapellmeister at the Court of Grand Duke Carl Freidrich, 4 pp, 8"x5", Weimar (Germany), 1856 Mar. 13. In German. Fine; minor soiling. To "Dear Friend," likely Liszt's publisher, about music matters: song corrections for "Englein hold im Locken Gold"; Berlioz' visit and concerts at which Berlioz conducted; the "Cellini" that Liszt conducted and Caspari sang the title role; and Cornelius' "Paternoster ."Likely performances for the season are "Raff's Dornrõschen, my Faust Symphony, Handel's Judas Maccabeus, andI Due Foscari of Verdi….Give my best regards to…the valiant defenders of consonance…." Nice musical content. With translation.
