Partly-printed Document, accomplished in manuscript, Signed by members of the Massachusetts Bay Council, including James Otis, Benjamin Lincoln (John) Winthrop, Caleb Cushing, Benjamin Greenleaf, Samuel Holten, and others, 1p, 15½"x9¾", Watertown, 1775 Sept. 6. Very good; some archival fold repairs on verso. Large paper seal at upper left. Appointing "Jonathan Grout Esquire to be one of Our Justices to keep Our Peace in our County of Worcester withing our Province of the Massachusetts Bay."

Very good; archival fold repairs on verso, light foxing. Large paper seal at upper left. Appointing "Jonathan Grout Esquire…Colonel of the Seventh Regiment of Militia in the County of Worcester ." When the Continental Army was created, Artemas Ward was named Major General, second in command to George Washington.

Biddle, Clement (1740-1814) American general; the "Quaker Soldier," a close personal friend of George Washington's and one of his best officers. Autograph Letter Signed, 1p, 9¼"x8", 1799 Sept. 9. Very good. To George Simpson, Cashier of the Bank of the United States, enclosing a note and letter (not present) from Mr. John Wright, with instructions to pay Mr. Wright's note. At lower left is "For Discount for Clement Biddle," making the letter signed twice.

Clark, George Rogers (1752-1818) American Revolutionary soldier and frontier leader. Autograph Document Signed "G R Clark," 1½"x6", n.p., n.d. Fine. To Mr. James Brevard: "Let Mr. Andw. Here have one hundred & Twenty weight of Flower, part of that…from you by Mr. Wm Payne." Matted with an engraving of Clark to an overall size of 15"x13½". Ready for framing and display. With the approval of Virginia governor Patrick Henry, Clark led an expedition to conquer the Northwest; his capture of Kaskaskia, Cahokia, and Vincennes (1778) saved Illinois and Kentucky for the Colonies. He fought the British and the Indians (1779-1783) to hold this territory. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1780.

Ellery, William (1727-1820) Member of the Continental Congress; Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Autograph Document Signed as the first customs collector of the port of Newport, on laid, watermarked paper, 1p, 5"x7¼", Newport, 1797 Aug. 19. Fine; small area of paper loss at upper left affects the top of one letter. Ellery certifies that "one brass field piece marked U.S., Five boxes of shot, and Ten barrels of powder have been landed in this Port from on board the Brig Little Sally James Taylor master from Philadelphia."

Ellsworth, Oliver (1745-1807) Delegate to Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention; 3rd Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. War-date Document Signed "Oliv. Ellsworth" as a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, 1p, 4½"x8¼", Hartford, 1775 July. Very good. Ordering the treasurer, John Lawrence to pay Andrew Dewey "..the amount of what is allowd him for his Service & Expence in the Late Boston Alarm as a Soldier in Capt. Peter Perrits Company of Rangers…." Documents dealing with Rangers are scarce.

Gates, Horatio (1728-1806) American Revolutionary War officer. Partly-printed Document Signed "Gates," and accomplished in his hand, 2 ½"x3 ¼", New York, Bowery, 1792 Feb. 13. Being a receipt for two pounds eleven shillings and four pence for hay. The receipt is printed on laid paper and has a decorative border. With small engraving of Gates. At one time, Gates was considered a serious rival of George Washington, but after the unsuccessful Conway Cabal and his defeat at Camden, Gates was disgraced. After the Revolutionary War, he moved to New York.

"A Proclamation, Declaring His Majesty's Pleasure for continuing the Officers in His Majesty's Plantations till His Majesty's Pleasure shall be further signified," 19"x14 ½", Saville House, 1760 October 27. Printed in London by Thomas Baskett. Fine; minor foxing, folds, and a couple of tiny holes at folds. Two woodcuts (British coat of arms at top) and docket on verso. George III ascended the throne in 1760, the year of this proclamation.

(George III). 1815 Act passed under George III, 2¼" pp, 12"x7½", printed in London by George Eyre and Andrew Strahan. Fine; light toning. Headed by the British coat of arms. "An Act to relieve certain Foreign Vessels resorting to the Port of London, in respect of Pilotage; and to regulate the Mode of Payment of Pilotage on Foreign Vessels in the said Port."

Hancock, John (1737-1793) American Revolutionary politician and statesman. Member of the Continental Congress (1775-80, 1785, 1786); president of the Congress (1775-77); first signer of the Declaration of Independence; governor of Massachusetts (1780-85, 1787-93). Document Signed as Governor of Massachusetts, 1 p, 12¾"x7¾", Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1781 May 16. Fine. The document has been archivally backed with japan paper and encased in deacidified Mylar, which can be easily removed if desired. Hancock authorizes Edmund Quincey and John Avery to take depositions in the divorce case of Mary and George Lobb "and the Depositions…you are to seal up, and transmit to the court…together with this commission.…" The seal of the Commonwealth is at upper left. An outstanding example of Hancock's signature.
