Russia. Pattern 3 Kopecks, 1827-SPB. B-200; Uzd-3196. 29 mm. 13.52 grams. Nicholas I. This was the pattern for new coinage on the standard of 36 rubles to the pood replacing the then current 24 rubles to the pood coinage. Thus the new 3 kopecks would weigh the same as the then current 2 kopecks. These essais were struck over 2 kopeck pieces with care taken that no trace of the host coin remained. Although dated 1827 they were actually struck in 1826. After bureaucratic delays, the new standard was finally introduced in 1830 but ironically the new coinage did not include the 3 kopeck denomination. Very rare. Uncirculated.
