$10 Capped Bust

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2495
1795 $10 Capped Bust. 13 leaves below eagle. PCGS graded AU-55. Old green holder. The mintages were small on this denomination because little demand existed domestically for $10 eagles. The first United States Mint struck coins to order back then, for the most part. Bankers and others deposited their silver or gold with the Mint, often in the form of foreign coins, which the Mint's workers turned into Federal coinage and then delivered to the owners of the precious metals.

Those depositing gold with the Mint in the first years had a preference for the more convenient $5 half eagles to the $10 eagles, ordering more of the smaller denomination than the larger. As best as we can understand, the eagle was too large for small transactions but too small for convenient transportation or storage of large sums. Many 1795-1804 eagles were exported.

Striking gold eagles that were only going to be exported or melted was wasteful of the Mint's production capacity. Production of this denomination ceased in 1804, therefore, possibly under the orders of President Jefferson. The halt in production for the gold eagle proved lengthy. It wouldn't be struck for circulation again until 1838, at the second Philadelphia Mint.

This lightly circulated 1795 13-leaves specimen has natural "old gold" patina and surfaces, with abundant luster and contrasting light-rubbed brownish gray highlights on the cheek, cap and shoulder. It is every bit as choice and natural as the photograph indicates, and should prove an exciting purchase for the successful bidder, offering hours of enjoyment and study. PCGS reports 27 with 66 finer (includes numerous repeats) (PCGS # 8551) .
Estimated Value $60,000 - 65,000.

1799 $10 Capped Bust. Small obverse stars. PCGS graded MS-62. Pleasing frosty luster graces satiny and lively golden surfaces on this Mint State 1799. Varying hues of gold, sometimes greenish, but now and then making the transition to reddish, mingle broadly with rich gold iridescence. An attractive MS62 that wears its bold strike proudly. Minor crumbling of the die edge occurs above the top two stars on the left, a characteristic of this particular small obverse stars die. Consider it a win-win situation! PCGS reports 15 at this level with 8 in MS-63 and 6 in MS-64 as finest (PCGS # 98562) .

The surface is clean and attractive for the grade, much more so than usual which is why we point it out to bidders (PCGS # 8600) .

1871-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Medium orange toning. 1871-CC checks in as a significant rarity among the $10 issues produced at the Carson City Mint. Relatively few were minted (in this instance 8,085), and all seem to have ended up in circulation. There was no interest on the part of numismatists at the time.

The present piece is exciting and attractive, ranking as it does high in the NGC Census, with few possessing such beauty and original color. The striking is very acceptable as well, much luster is present, the rarity is unquestioned, and all elements are in place for this to create a stir when it crosses the block. NGC reports 5 at this level with 6 in AU-55, 6 in AU-58 and 1 in MS-62 (PCGS # 8661) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

1874-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. The CC mintmark is lightly struck as normally seen with this issue, though full and visible. The color is very pale orange gold. Mintage of only 16,767. Breen-6979, "Prohibitively rare above VF." The present specimen is considerably above VF and would seem to provide an unusual opportunity for the Carson City specialist or date collector. Pop 8, with 7 in 55 and just one in MS-65.

1874-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded VF-30. A pleasing example of this rare issue with remarkably clean surfaces and rims throughout. As typical for virtually all authentic pieces of this issue, a slightly weak strike. A total of 16,767 were struck. "Prohibitively rare above VF," notes Walter Breen and this coin with its remarkably clean surfaces, certainly ranks among the better survivors (PCGS # 8670) .

1874-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded VF-25. Only 16,767 minted. Lightly toned. A thin line at the ear and some scattered marks on the neck and in the right obverse field, but these are to be expected since the coin spent the better part of a decade or more in circulation. Centers, while not 100% perfect, are sharp enough for this scarcer CC-mint issue to warrant mention (PCGS # 8670) .

Lot 2504
1875-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded EF-45. Only 7,715 minted. Pop 4; 14 finer. Few dates in the series rival this 1875-CC's rarity in all grades. The present coin has the usual aspects, including some minor strike softness in the centers. What it doesn't have, however, is any problems. The rims are choice; the surfaces are clean with nice color, and the entire coin affords the prospective bidder excellent "eye-appeal" -- that sublte quality separating the average from above average specimen (PCGS # 8673) .

When seen -- which is not often -- the 1875-CC is apt to be in Very Fine, occasionally Extremely Fine preservation. Even a low level AU would be a major numismatic rarity and virtually impossible to afford. The present piece, solidly at Extremely Fine 45, is one of the more attractive available and will be a showpiece in the collection of its next owner.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Attractive in that is has very clean surfaces for this scarce date, along with choice, problem-free rims. Centers are a tad weakly struck as almost always seen, with lessening of hair detail at Liberty's brow. Lustrous hugs the main devices in a close golden embrace (PCGS # 8675) .

1878-S $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Pop 21; 19 finer. Once the Resumption Act of 1875 went into full effect and small change began to return to circulation in December 1877, the government was able to reestablish gold parity with paper money substitutes beginning in 1879. The year 1878 was one of transition from the very low mintage issues of 1862 to 1877 to the very high mintage issues struck thereafter to the turn of the 20th century and beyond. Not especially rare, this is an important date in the history of the soon-to-be-official Gold Standard of the country (PCGS # 8682) .

1907 $10 Indian. No periods. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. A touch of orange-brown patina on the highest point of the cheek and topmost hair curls of this lustrous, toned No Motto ten. The Indian motif took a zigzagging course in 1907 when three separate variations were produced by the mint before finally settling on this No Motto, No Periods type. But the design proved to be short-lived. Without IN GOD WE TRUST anywhere on the coin, people whose sense of tradition and propriety became upset and caused Congress to instruct the mint, who instructed the mint master, to correct the problem. Thus the 1907 is part of a two-year Type (PCGS # 8852) .

1908-S $10 Indian. With motto. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely rich golden toning. Only 59,850 minted. Pop 11 with 10 finer. There is only one type issued by San Francisco in 1908, all have IN GOD WE TRUST in the field left of the eagle. As a date, 1908-S is considered rare since only 59,850 were struck. Gems are extremely difficult to acquire, in fact, to find any Mint State 65 eagle even the commonest date in this state of preservation is clearly a challenge, let alone a rare date.

A fleeting look will tell all, the surfaces are satiny fresh, a glass is needed to find any infinitesimal tick marks hidden on the feathers. This is certainly one of the freshest, most original toned and desirable 1908-S eagles we've presented in some while. Bidders will want to avail themselves of the opportunity to purchase this distinguished rarity, for it may not be offered again (PCGS # 8861) .
