Lot 2045
1893 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. White and well struck. Pop 874; 116 in 65; 3 in 66; 1 in 68. The surfaces are bright with moon-glow white luster and show none of the muting often seen on 1893 (PCGS # 7220) .

Lot 2046
1893-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck and mostly white. Pop 732; 355 in 64, 7 in 65. This is a first-rate Choice Mint State 63 example with eye appeal and limited bagmarks. Most examples of the 1893-CC Dollar are heavily bagmarked, however, this is a exception. Both sides have bright silver luster and are decently struck if not quite fully so. Neither side has even a hint of reflective surface (PCGS # 7222) .

The Carson City Mint building stands solidly today and serves as the Nevada State Museum on Carson Street, corner of Robinson. Coinage activity on Carson Street ended in 1893, coincidentally, the year of this frosty silver dollar. Several exhibits remain in place relating to Nevada history, including some about numismatics. A set of Carson City coinage comes to mind and we recommend a tour of this facility to anyone who has an interest in Carson City's history.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

Lot 2047
1893-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62 Prooflike. Blast white. This sparkling '93-CC boasts swirling cartwheel effects and uncommonly sharp striking detail for the issue with only the centers at all soft, and this a common occurrence for the date. Unusual, on the other hand, is the state of the fields, which show decided prooflike reflection. As such, they provide ample contrast for the heavily frosted relief portions, most notable on the eagle and Liberty's contoured surface (PCGS # 7223) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

Lot 2051
1893-S Morgan Dollar. NGC graded EF-45. Original toning. A well preserved example of this desirable key date. Not only is the business strike mintage of 100,000 pieces the lowest in the series, but it is unchallenged in its rarity in Extremely Fine and higher grades. There is a small area of contact along the jaw line as well as some old hairlines in the upper face and through the lower hair curls into the nearby field, but there are no other abrasions that we find need mentioning. Pleasing example for this key date (PCGS # 7226) .

1893-S Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded VF-35. Popular key date. Nice even toning and well struck for the grade. Bidders will especially enjoy the opportunity of acquiring a coin that has never been cleaned. Neither does it show the usual objectionable rim bumps of most specimens. And there are only a few widely spaced contact marks from its venture into circulation so many years ago (PCGS # 7226) .

1893-S Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded VF-25. An attractive example of this key issue, the surface natural "old silver" color with light grade high points and fields deepening around the main devices and stars with medium-level toning. Scarce in all grades. Collector demand keeps these returning to the market but just as soon as a nice example like this VF25 appears, it is snatched away and goes into hiding again (PCGS # 7226) .

1894 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. Well struck and white. Popular key date. The powerfully struck, lustrous surfaces are readily appreciable at all angles. This is an important issue among Gem quality date buyers. The strike as keen as a razor on this key date 1894, with sharp-than-average hair detail and a crisp eagle collectors would die for!

Business strike Morgan Dollar production fell to an all-time low at the Philadelphia Mint this year with production of just 110,000 pieces. With the exception of the 1901, the 1894 is the rarest Morgan dollar from this mint in Mint State. This silvery bright example swirls with full mint luster and grand eye-appeal, with little in the way of the usual abrasions which are too few and relatively far between to describe, and none are worthy of singular attention. A solid, Premium Quality PCGS graded Gem for the high-quality dollar collector. PCGS reports 17 at this level with 3 in MS-66 as finest (PCGS # 7228) .

1894 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. A white gem. Fully radiant - an important and rare feature for this sometimes poorly preserved Proof issue -- the surfaces display metallic pearl-white mirrors whose pitapatation is almost unnerving to view. 1894 is, as collectors know or soon discover, a very scarce year in Proof quality (972 minted) as well as the circulation strikes. Pop 12; 7 finer in cameo.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000.

1894 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 63. A hint of light even toning on both sides. Pop 57. Popular date. Precision strike on every device. Very few survivors could possibly equal the choice technical merits and originality of this Proof 1894 piece. In addition to its strong strike and nearly flawless surface quality, both sides are gleaming with mint brilliance under the toning. 1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68. Lightly toned on both sides with light green, blue and grey shades. Pop 2; 7 in PF68 Cameo; 4 in PF68 Ultra Cameo; 1 in PF69 Ultra Cameo. Rarest of the rare in the Morgan series, attested to by all to be the "King of the Morgan Dollars" and for many reasons, the first of which is that only 880 Proofs were minted and it is from these few that generations of collectors, must vie with one another for ownership of the small obtainable supply on the market at any one time.

The coin is, breathlessly beautiful, a knock-out. As can be seen in the photographs, it acquired deep original iridescent shades of toning in its years spent in the original tissue wrapper. Where later Proof coins are packaged in either celluloid or cellophane sleeves (1930s-1950s) or flat-pack plastic by the mint, all pre-1916 Proof coinage was sent to its recipients in simple jeweler's tissue paper. The tissue paper has a certain amount of sulfur content. And it is this which imparted the many marvelous colors often seen on Proof Morgans, like this glittering 1895. Faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies, the hair is crystal clear down to the tiniest hair strand, and this includes the important curls directly above the ear, with only two of them appearing fused together; included also in this full blow by the dies, a resplendent eagle, proud and assured, with full-featured wings outstretched and a nice feather-covered chest projecting from the central part of this side of the design. The coin itself, grading Proof 68, is housed in a protective NGC holder and will forever remind us just how spectacular these early Morgan dollars were in Proof condition. Don't let the current market price dissuade you from bidding. As seems inevitable whenever a great rarity like a Gem Proof 1895 Morgan dollar changes hands, the interest and value only intensifies, year over year (PCGS # 7330) .

Aside from the annual issue of Proofs, coins of this type were routinely ignored by the vast majority of hobbyists. It was not until decades later in the 1950s and 1960s that collectors sought to own an example of each mint's products for each respective date. Only then did it become apparent that none of the 12,000 1895 Philadelphia Mint Dollars reportedly struck for circulation were extant. Not a single verifiable example could be located, and the demand for this issue has ever since fallen entirely on the few hundred Proofs surviving from that year.
Estimated Value $100,000 - 115,000.

1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 40. Key date to the Morgan Dollars. Seldom seen in circulated proof condition. Light toning. Pop 1 in this grade.

As Silver Dollar experts will tell you, only 880 Proof 1895s were issued. There were an additional 12,000 business strike made that year as well, but apparently these were all melted in 1918 or thereabouts when 270 million Silver Dollars had to be destroyed in pursuance to the Pittman Act of 1918.

Today, only the 880 Proofs sold to collectors in original Proof sets did not get destroyed. And of those, it is likely only 500 examples out of the original mintage are available for purchase, many of them mishandled but surprisingly few in actual circulated condition like the present specimen. It is always a joy to be able to catalog a sharp-looking 1895 whatever its technical grade, like that being offered here. We hope the successful bidder will enjoy owning this King of the Morgan Dollars as much as we did having it pass through our sale.

A simply exquisite Gem, the snow white surfaces on Liberty and the eagle gyrate to-and-fro with full, starbright textured luster. Against them, silvery mirrors glow. To say this is a resonant gem is to do it an injustice, since there are never enough adjectives to describe it fully. Only first hand viewing can capture the effect this delightful gem inspires in a coin collector. Were it only possible for everyone to own such a coin! But then, the mint struck a mere 912 Proofs this year. And, as long-time collectors know, a goodly portion of that figure no longer exists or, worse, is mishandled and in low Proof grades.
