Edward VII (1901-1910)

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3172
Great Britain. Matte Proof gold Five Pounds, 1902. Edward VII. S-3966. Choice. Lovely original "soft gold" color, relatively few hairlines, swirling die-work lines from the matting process, one fine but noticeable scratch on the king's neck and an abrasion on the horse just at the point of the sword. Still, far above most. Struck as a Royal Mint experiment in proofing just this one year, for Edward's coronation sets. Scarce. NGC graded Matte Proof 63.
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,650.

Lot 3211
Great Britain. Shilling, 1905. S.3982; ESC-1414 (Rarity-2); KM-800. Edward VII. The rarest shilling of Edward VII and possibly the most elusive of all the coins of Edward VII in top grade. Often plagued by cuts and 'bagmarks' this coin has smooth problem-free surfaces and original luster, with a light golden tone. Extremely rare in mint state condition. Several of this date have sold privately in the UK recently for over $5,000 but we are placing a conservative extimate on this desirable rarity. NGC graded MS-63.
