Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3118
Great Britain. Bronzed Proof Halfpenny, 1870. This excessively rare coin is unlisted by Peck and unlised by Freeman, but was purchased from the same source as many of the other rare proof and pattern Victorian halfpennies here offered. It contrasts nicely with the previous lot- the currency issue 1870 halfpenny. NGC graded Proof 64 Brown.
Estimated Value $700 - 900.

Great Britain. Proof halfpenny, 1878. Victoria Bun Head. S-3956 for type. P-1822. Ultra-rare Proof of Record! Such Proofs were made for mostly internal use by the Mint each year; only a few of each have escaped into collectors' hands. Peck recorded just 2 known outside the BM collection. This one is magnificent! Superb medium brown and light gold. NGC graded Proof 66 Red & Brown.

Lot 3128
Great Britain. Proof bronze Halfpenny, 1879. Victoria Bun Head. Freeman dies 14+0. S-3956 for type, but Spink does not list a Proof for this date. Neither do Freeman nor Peck, but that may be explicable by the sheer rarity of this date, obviously a Proof of Record (the cataloguer has seen one intact Proof set of this year, and its existence should certainly be known by both Freeman and Spink). The gorgeous Proof halfpenny is probably R7: 2 or 3 thought to exist. This coin, of glorious quality, is probably the finest known, a Gem with gleaming chocolate-brown surfaces and remnants of mint red, mauve toning, surfaces glittering and nearly flawless, sharp as a tack in strike. A simply irreplaceable rarity! NGC graded Proof 65 Brown.
Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,250.

Lot 3130
Great Britain. Proof bronze Halfpenny, 1880. Victoria Bun Head. S-3956 for type but, again, not listed as a Proof. Peck however knows it: P-1828 (Extremely Rare). Freeman-341 as R19 (2-5 known). EMC-2083 as R6. Not since the Norweb Collection sale of the mid-1980s has such a nice group of bronze Proofs appeared on the market. Unlike Norweb, where quality varied widely, the Cheshire Proofs are consistently of high quality. This is a deep reddish Gem with reflective mirrors lightly toned with mauve and iridescent blue hues. Peck knew of only one specimen, the Fred Baldwin coin, which passed to the Nicholson Collection; this coin. A seldom-found opportunity to own a magnificent bronze rarity! NGC graded Proof 66 Red & Brown.
Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,000.

Lot 3136
Great Britain. Pattern bronze Halfpenny by Weyl, 1887. Queen Victoria crowned, Jubilee style, with legends in English. Engraved by the German die-cutter Adolph Weyl. P-2192. Bronzed. Date curiously placed, split into two digits on each side at the top of the queen's crown. The ornate reverse replaces one shield of the traditional royal insignia with an engraved elephant, seal and kangaroo, symbols of parts of the far-flung Empire; and Peck believed that these rare patterns were suggestions for a coinage for the dominions of the Empire. Plain edge (not viewable in the slab). Freeman-929: R19 (2-5 known). What a coin this is! Gleaming mirror surfaces: bright iridescent blue toning on the obverse surrounds the portrait, while the reverse is exquisite with deep mauve over milk-chocolate bronzing. The Terner 2 coin (lot 445) was PCGS PR66 and fetched $1,495. This coin is equally beautiful.

The Cheshire collector's notes concerning this rarity are well worth repeating here: "Interestingly this proposed pattern for a change in the bronze coinage features the controversial 'Golden Jubilee' crowned head of Victoria, used extensively on the gold and silver coins of Britain 1887 to 1893 but never used on the bronze coins. The familiar uncrowned 'bun' head remained in use until the advent of the Old or Veiled Head on all bronze coins in 1895. Only a few specimens of this rare piece were made." Indeed, a prize for the advanced collector of British bronzes! NGC graded Proof 65 Brown.

Great Britain. Bronze Halfpenny, 1893. Victoria Bun Head. S-3956. A lovely Prooflike Red & Brown example of the late issues of this style (which ceased the following year), sharply struck with good luster slightly toned, but mirrored surfaces. Probably bought for the collection to show the difference between a Prooflike coin and the genuine Proofs, of which the Cheshire Collection has more than its fair share. Reflective surfaces are unusual and should make this coin worth a premium. NGC graded MS-65 Prooflike.

Great Britain. Proof bronze Halfpenny, 1874-H. Victoria Bun Head. S-3957. P-1889, listed as Extremely Rare. Prooflike coins from this mint are frequently mistaken for genuine Proofs, but there is no mistaking this beautiful specimen, a Gem with mirror surfaces slightly subdued by very handsome brownish golden toning, full double-struck Proof details including the mintmark, a couple of tiny, tiny ticks in the fields. Coins of this quality make studying the die-work, which is intricate on the Bun Heads, simply a joy. Exquisite! NGC graded Proof 66 Brown.

Great Britain. Bronze Proof Farthing, 1876-H. Victoria Bun Head. S-3959. Heaton mint. Normal 6. Collectors are sometimes fooled, by retailers and at auction, by the somewhat deceptive Prooflike examples of these Heaton coins, the farthings and the halfpennies alike. So too some graders, who hedge by calling them "Specimens." This confusion has gone on a long time, but those who remain confused should examine a coin like this, which is decidedly nothing but a Proof. In fact, this is one of the finest in existence. Despite the "RB" designation, it's at least 90% firey red, just a hint of oxidation having occurred. If you want to own a gleaming Gem Proof, take a look at this coin! Great Britain. Pattern Copper-Nickel Farthing, 1868. Victoria bun head. S-3960, a Proof of Record struck off-metal; Peck-1930, as "very rare." A wonderful example of what was really a colonial issue, as all the circulation strikes were meant for use in Malta, which the Royal Navy used as a fueling port in the Mediterranean. Dies by Leonard Charles Wyon, after a model by Theed. Tightly graded by NGC, and truly a Gem Proof with essentially perfect, original surfaces showing pale iridescence on light gray metal. Business strikes are of course made of bronze. NGC graded Proof 65.
