Lot 2787
Great Britain. Shilling, 1854. S.3904; ESC-1302; KM-734.1. Victoria. Young head. Overdate (4 over inverted 1 or 4) is subtle. (Ref: Spink Numismatic Circular, April 2003, listed at £2,000). With or without an overdate, the 1854 shilling is the second rarest of the Victorian shillings (after the 1850). This is among the finest specimens to have appeared on the market in several decades; and in fact, sometimes a few years will roll by without the appearance of this rarity on the auction market. 2005 Spink catalogue value is £1,650 in EF, with no price given for an Uncirculated coin, indicative of how rare it truly is. This coin is no-questions Mint State (Unc.) and has attractive dark russet toning, and also a nice sharp strike, particularly on the important date. One of the rarest of all Victorian silver coins!. NGC graded MS-64.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,500.
