Victoria (1837-1901)

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2668
Great Britain. Proof "Una & Lion" gold 5 Pounds, 1839. Victoria.Young Head. S.3851; Fr-386; KM-742. Produced by the great 19th-century coin engraver William Wyon, this is among the most famous and desirable of British coins. The obverse design features a young bust of Victoria aged 20 years, while the reverse has the Queen dressed as Una leading the British lion. This gorgeous specimen is remarkably free from scuffs and has a very minimum amount of the hairlines that other examples of this rare coin fall victim to, and the cameo effect of the detailed design is unusual. It would not be easy to find a more exciting example. NGC graded Proof 63 Ultra Cameo.
Estimated Value $45,000 - 50,000.

Lot 2685
Great Britain. Gold Proof Half Sovereign, 1839. Victoria Young Head. S-3859. Plain edge. Medal-die axis. Very scarce. Mintage unknown but about 300 pieces, all for the Coronation sets of this year. These Proofs are all graced by the more elegant, thinner, so-called First Head, showing Victoria as a mere girl of 20 when this coin was struck. Born in 1819, she acceded to the throne of England upon the death of her uncle, King William IV, in June of 1837. Within three years, in 1840, she married Prince Albert, second son of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg, thereby cementing a relationship to German royalty which would ultimately plague the family name, in two world wars in the next century. But in the 1830s and 1840s England was a relative happy place, of great prosperity, full of what was then new technology such as iron bridges and railroads; and the many small, foreign battles which would come in the next five decades would be known to history as "Victoria's little wars." They spread the grasp of the Empire to its widest reach by the end of the century. This delightful coin is a kind of harbinger of the glory that lay ahead of England in 1839. Great Britain. Proof gold half sovereign, 1853. Victoria Young Head. Reeded edge. S.3859; Fr-389c; KM-735.1; WR-346. The Proofs of 1853 are all very rare, and all can be traced to the special sets made up this year, evidently for or on behalf of the royal family. This is the former Terner Registry coin, with gleaming surfaces set off by sensational cameo contrast and other frosted devices. Superb, a true rarity and a prize for the connoisseur. In the cataloguer's opinion, this is among the finest known and should be graded higher. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo.

Lot 2717
Great Britain. Pattern Bonomi Crown, "1837." The famous 1893 incuse-design piece which was a mystery to collectors for some years when it first appeared on the market. To some extent, it remains mysterious. Struck in Hard White Metal. Plain edge, on which appears the number 9. ESC-322, rated R3 or "extremely rare." KM-PnPP21. Known in a variety of metals, with a total mintage among them probably in the range of 200 to 300 pieces, this "pattern" was apparently the invention of a gentleman named Joseph Bonomi. The story is well told in Linecar & Stone's book, derived from an article in the Numismatic Circular by Captain Pridmore. Bonomi it seems was an Eqyptian traveler and antiquarian, member of the Numismatic Society of London in 1837, who believed that coins would wear less if their design were incuse, rather than raised, an idea that would take form in American gold quarter eagles and half eagles starting in 1908, by designer Bela Lyon Pratt. Bonomi supposedly conceived the Queen and Britannia in a style that suggested an Egyptian motif, which of course was extremely popular in the 1830s. How the master dies were created, and exactly when and by whom, remains indefinite. However, dies were sunk by Theophilus Pinches (probably in 1893) and coins offered for sale in May 1893 by Rochelle Thomas. It is from the latter's ad offering these for the first time that most of what we know about them comes. However, he took license with certain facts to make them more desirable. ESC lists the various metals in which this piece was struck. Those that were numbered bear a number on their edge of from 1 to 150. Hence the number 9 on this piece. Whatever is the truth behind these curious coins, and when precisely they were made (1887 to 1893 or even afterwards), is of little consequence today. They are accepted among the patterns of Queen Victoria by most collectors simply because of their stark beauty. Most specimens are not very well preserved, unfortunately. The present crown is among the finest seen by the cataloguer, bright and "fresh." In our opinion, the grading service did not understand the striking procedure of this pattern and the grade assigned should have been somewhat more generous. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the more alluring Victorian numismatic items, something very few collectors indeed can claim among their holdings. Extremely rare, and very desirable! NGC graded MS-62.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
