Lot 2635
Great Britain. Proof gold 2 Pounds, 1831. S.3828; Fr-382; KM-718. William IV. As a Gem Proof 65 Ultra Cameo, maybe the finest known example of this rare coin. There were no 1831 £5 pieces, and the £2 piece is the highest denomination coin struck in the reign of William IV. Featuring the bare head of the King facing right and a reverse design of a crowned shield of arms and mantle this is a one-year type coin. Issued originally for inclusion in the Proof Set of the year, the £2 pieces are nearly always found in scuffed and scratched condition. This piece is truly exceptional. NGC graded Proof 65 Ultra Cameo.
Estimated Value $13,000 - 17,000.

Lot 2638
Great Britain. Proof Crown, 1831. William IV. S-3833. ESC-271; KM-715. "WW" on truncation. Very rare. Mintage unknown, long said to be 120 pieces for the Coronation sets of this year. However, contemporary restrikes obviously exist as more than that are known. Nonetheless, this is one of the rarest crowns of the modern era, and exceedingly difficult to locate anymore in a truly choice state of preservation. Most seen are dull gray, lifeless, cleaned, dipped. Not so this lovely specimen! Lightly toned, one of the nicest pieces seen on the world auction market in recent years which seems very harshly graded by NGC. Every collector of 19th-century British coins desires this classic crown but few own it. If you have the means, consider placing a strong bid, because it could be some time until an equal 1831 Proof crown is available (most of the better ones are still part of the complete Proof sets, adding even more to the financial difficulty of acquiring one). NGC graded Proof 62 Cameo.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 18,000.

Lot 2639
Great Britain. 1831. William IV. WW block. Plain edge. S.3834; ESC-657; KM-714.1. The 1831 Proof is a notoriously rare coin to find without edge knocks and some degree of surface wear. This is a truly exceptional specimen which was taken from an original 1831 Proof set, and must have been fully protected in the box of issue for nearly two centuries. Splendid and bright golden mauve iridescent toning. Gem Proof! A real treat for the eye to behold. NGC graded Proof 65 Ultra Cameo.
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,800.

Lot 2660
Great Britain. Penny, 1834. S.3845; KM-707. William IV. This might be labeled the "drop 4" variety or date, as the digit is lower than the others, out of line, and appears to have been dropped. What actually happened is that the entire date should have been placed farther left under the bust. This is a very rare date, and type, for King William's biggest coppers are seldom seen better than XF. This specimen is extraordinarily nice, with luscious chocolate surfaces showing traces of mint red, and a lovely portrait of the Sailor King. The reverse is sharp, with a delightful Britannia, but there is some metal stress from the rolling of the metal in the upper right and left fields. All in all, however, this is a fantastic copper, and it has few equals in all of British numismatics. 2005 Spink catalogue value is £650 in "Unc" but decent Williams have been selling in the UK for more in recent months. We feel our estimate is conservative. NGC graded MS-65 Brown.

Great Britain. Proof copper Halfpenny, 1831. William IV. S-3847. Bronzed. Coin-die alignment. Rare, mintage unknown, variously reported as 150, 225 or 400 pieces for the Coronation sets. 400 (or more) is the most likely number, but these are today quite rare. Most are not very nice. This is a happy exception. A few tiny specks of carbon but the fields are reflective and the eye-appeal is excellent. NGC graded Proof 64 Brown.
