Lot 2060
Russia. Nicholas II (1868-1918). The last of the Russian czars, Nicholas was an inept and autocratic ruler. The failing economy, the lost Russian-Japanese war, and World War I finally resulted in the Russian revolution. Nicholas abdicated in 1917 and he and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks in July 1918.

Document Signed as Czar of Russia, December 2, 1902, Saint Petersburg, 1 page, 13½ x 8 in. In Russian. Very fine. Ordering that the appropriate medals and document be given to a man named Jacob, on whom Nicolas has bestowed the title of Cavalier. No translation. Very fine.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Lot 2062
Russia. 37½ Rubles, 1902. Bitkin-309; Fr-170; Sev-578; Y-B65. Nicholas II. Head left. Reverse: Eagle in circle, legend around. Struck at the St. Petersburg mint, without mintmark. Mintage of only 225 pieces. Well struck as expected for a proof striking with nicely textured surfaces and considerable brilliance. Severin quotes the comments made by S. I. Chizhov in his 1904 book published in Moscow relative to this issue, Outline of Certain Types of Russian Coins in Past Two Centuries, "These coins not struck for circulation but selected for high dignitaries in the amount of 225 specimens. In all, 200 pieces were presented to His Majesty for personal gifts on special occasions. The remaining 25 specimens were turned over to H. I. H. Grand Duke George Mikhailovich." As the largest gold coin of Russia, it is of interest to world collectors assembling a collection of "crown size gold" as well as collectors of the Russian series. One of the great twentieth century rarities, and seldom offered. Extremely Rare. PCGS graded Proof 62.
Estimated Value $65,000 - 80,000.

Lot 2063
Russia. 25 Rubles or 2 ½ Imperials, 1908. Fr-171; Bitkin-311; Sev-587; Y-A65. Nicholas II. St. Petersburg mint, without mintmark. Head left. Reverse: Eagle in beaded circle, legend around. Total mintage of only 150 pieces. KM lists a mintage of 150 business strikes and 25 proofs and Bitkin may have added these two figures as he shows a total of 175, not broken down by production method. Severin quoted a mintage of 150, not mentioning regular or proof strikes. It seems likely that 150 pieces were struck, all as proof strikes only, but whatever the figure, they are extremely rare and equally popular and desirable. Of the miniscule original amount struck, there can only be a very few in this choice state. R3, 4 to 9 pieces estimated to exist. PCGS graded Proof 64.
Estimated Value $75,000 - 85,000.

Lot 2072
Russia. Ruble, 1903-AP. Bitkin-51; Sev-4107; Dav-293; Y-59. Nicholas II. This specimen is absolutely stunning! It has that special look and eye appeal that experienced numismatists who seek truly superb coins will immediately recognize and desire. The strike is perfect, the brilliant proof surfaces are perfect and the deeply frosted devices are, dare we say it, perfect. All this perfection is further enhanced by magnificent iridescent periphial toning which could not be nicer if it was made to order. In addition, it is a very rare date with only 55,519 business strikes issued. Unquestionably the finest of this date, and if there is a more beautiful proof ruble of Nicholas II out there, we'd like to see it! PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 12,000.
