Lot 1744
Russia. Peter the Great (1672-1725). During his reign, Peter created a regular army and navy, subjugated the Church to the state, and created new territorial divisions of the country. He was interested in science, was a skillful diplomat, and a talented military leader. In 1721, he proclaimed Russia an Empire and became Emperor of All Russia.

Letter Signed as Czar of Russia, June 21, 1711, from the banks of the River Reut, 4 pages, 7¾ x 6¼ in. In Russian, to General Field Marshal Count Sheremetiev, ordering him to send 300 cavalry to Moldavia to propose that the Moldavians join Russia, and to get provisions, by force if necessary. Some overall soiling, but boldly penned and signed. With translation. Russia was fighting on a dual front, having been at war with Sweden since 1700, in a struggle to control the Baltic Sea territories, and with Turkey since 1710. Peter had directed much of the war with Sweden (which would last until 1721) himself, being responsible for a great victory at Poltava in 1709 over Charles XII, and at the time of this letter, was marching against the Turks into Moldavia. The war with the Turks was negotiated to an end in 1713.

Russia. Novodel 3 Ducats, 1714. Fr-Unlisted; Sev-Unlisted. 10.44 grams. Peter I. Laureate and draped armoured bust right. Reverse: Crowned double headed eagle holding sceptor and orb. Unknown to Severin in this weight, though he mentions a 2 Ducat novodel at 6.94 grams, nor apparently to more recent Russian compilers as well. This prooflike specimen is fairly well struck from an obverse die which has obviously been refurbished after long use and storage. The reverse die has also been worked and there is a noticeable die break from the hind quarters of the dragon through the eagle's right claw down to the rim, a diagnostic for comparison with others of this weight (should one ever be seen) and novodels of other weights. Extremely rare and possibly Unique. PCGS graded MS-63.

Russia. Ruble, 1704. Diakov-p.69,9; Sev-152; Uzd-0464. This first rouble of Peter I is struck over a 1655 Jefimok (Rarity-4) and shows very clear renmants of the obverse counterstamps. The original host coin is a taler of Austria of uncertain type, though with time spent in careful examination, this too may be determined. The only other specimen of overstriking on a Jefimok is shown in Spassky, but this specimen is better. Extremely rare and desirable. PCGS graded EF-45.

Russia. Novodel Ruble Struck in Gold, 1705. Fr-76 (62); Sev-12; Bitkin-532; Diakov-page 87, part 1. Struck in gold in the weight of 13 Ducats, 44.22 grams. Plain edge. Struck from the dies of the novodel ruble of 1705 (Sev-185). Peter I, bust right. Reverse: Crowned double headed eagle. Sharply struck with all details bold and clear, the hair curls in higher than normal relief. The surfaces are fully prooflike on both sides. This is the plate coin shown in Bitkin and Diakov which appeared in both the 1977 Soderman and 1991 Goodman auctions and is the only specimen appearing at public auction in over 25 years. Severin mentions this present specimen (his no. 12) as well as another in 40.4 grams weight making this one of only two known examples. He also mentions a gold 1707 rouble (no. 18) and a 1723 in 12 ducat weight, these presumably unique. This is one of the most important coins in the Hesselgesser Collection and indeed the entire Russian series. Semi-Unique and of the highest rarity. PCGS graded MS-62.
