Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 209
1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. PCGS graded Fine-15. This is the only "common" variety of this date, all others range from extremely scarce to unique. This coin boasts of a nice full strike on an adjustment-free planchet and all attractively toned. This is truly a marvelous problem-free example with a light silvery-grey center obverse surrounded by a ring of darker antique grey, while the reverse exhibits a uniform light silvery-grey. Only 23,464 were coined for the year, and very few are found in high grades, most seen are in grades of Very Good or below. Furthermore, these often are found with damage or other significant problems, not so here, the surfaces are excellent and nearly undiminished by time. We also note that the hair detail is quite strong for the grade assigned (PCGS # 6051) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

1834 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. This is indeed a very handsome specimen. It is quite well struck with only the slightest softness on the very highest points. The cap, facial details, the drapery with clasp and the stars are all sharp on the obverse as are 95% of the eagle feathers on the reverse. The semi prooflike surfaces are quite clean and both sides are beautifully toned in lovely old silvery blue and russet shades. Also noted is interesting recutting of the zero of the denomination. The population is 58 in MS-65, though we doubt there could be very many this attractive. . There are in addition 20 in 66 and 4 in 67.

1859 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. Bright white with semi-reflective fields. Rich frosty luster over all surfaces and the devices are super frosty, giving a "cameo-like" appearance. There are some light hairlines in the obverse and reverse fields but the overall eye appeal of this crusty example takes the emphasis off of them. Original die polish lines are seen on the reverse, most noticeably at 12:00. Identified by tick marks in a group just right of IT of UNITED. A truly choice Philadelphia No Motto seated half dollar. 1881 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. A pure white and prooflike example of this low mintage Seated half dollar, 10,975 business strikes produced. Deeply reflective fields contrast a thickly frosted Liberty that appears to be of gem quality. Obverse and reverse quality is matched and the eye appeal of this coin is absolutely stunning. Many would think this specimen was a proof were it not for the faint die file lines in the denticles above ERIC of AMERICA, a diagnostic for this business strike issue. While the 1881 is not nearly as available as the 1879, high grade examples were saved during the time of issue. That said, gem examples are still rare and an example as choice as the present piece is seldom seen. Housed in an old PCGS green label holder (PCGS # 6363) .

1882 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Quite simply, a beautiful specimen. It is also a rare date in all grades. The low proof mintage of 1100 is exactly one fifth of the equally low business strike mintage of 5500. The strike is superb with the frosty central designs nicely contrasted by the deep mercury like proof fields. All this cradled in a thin halo of golden russet and electric blue…outstanding!
