U.S. Gold $10 Indian 1907-1932

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2415
1907 $10 Gold Indian. No periods. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. At first glance, this marvelous coin appears to be MS-67. What PCGS sees to call it only MS-64 would take some imagination thus our Premium Quality designation. The luster is booming, the strike is deep and full, and there appear to be zero abrasions. Hairlines? None apparent to this cataloguer. Best of all, the coin gleams with a simply exquisite, deep golden red color. Worth strong bids from knowing collectors! (PCGS # 8852) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

1908-S $10 Gold Indian. With motto. PCGS graded MS-62. A wonderfully fresh, original and crisp example of this scarce Indian Head eagle. Only 59,850 pieces were struck this year and any choice uncirculated example is a good buy. The present example has microgranular surfaces with all-encompassing radial luster. Surfaces are a deep orange-gold while the cheek is lighter yellow gold in appearance. Two small nicks on the cheek are the only thing keeping this piece out of a n MS-63 holder. The 1908-S is scarce to rare in any mint state grade and the present example gives one the chance to purchase an extremely choice piece before getting into the more expensive grades. Housed in an old PCGS green label holder. PCGS has graded only 36 in MS-62 with only 84 higher (PCGS # 8861) .

1909-D $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-60. A choice uncirculated example of this tough issue. The surfaces possess a satiny blend of orange gold with steel highlights. While a few tick marks exist on the cheek, neck and reverse, this piece is substantially finer than the assigned grade. This is an issue that is known to come well struck and the present example is no exception. The 1909-D can be difficult to locate in grades higher than MS-62 and any choice uncirculated example is a good buying opportunity.

1909-S $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. A tough date in pleasing MS-62 and above. Well struck with LIBERTY boldly defined. Rich luster over surfaces that are finely granular and coppery gold in color. Identified by a faint hairline scratch under stars 4 & 5. Only 292,350 eagles were produced at San Francisco in 1909, a small number for the early 20th century. Survival ratios are quite low in choice mint state and one would do quite well to bid aggressively for this choice example. PCGS has graded 53 in MS-62 with 88 finer (PCGS # 8864) .

1910-S $10 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. Rich golden color with hints of rose and lavender. Finely granular surfaces that shimmer under rich luster. Another issue known to come well struck and this piece is no exception. The 1910-S has a mintage of 811,000 but a low survival rate in mint state. Any truly mint state coin is rare and those with fresh and appealing eye appeal, such as this piece, are extremely desirable. For identification, a small scratch exists from the end of the eagles tail and continues to the border at an angle. PCGS has graded 56 in MS-63, 16 in MS-64, 2 in MS-65 and 2 in MS-66 (PCGS # 8867) .

1911-D $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded AU-55 PQ. Finely granular surfaces with remnants of original mint frost. The obverse is well struck and lacking any abrasions or marks that could be considered "out-of-place". On the reverse above E PLURIBUS UNUM, there is an area where a small wipe occurred. The 1911-D has the smallest mintage for this entire series, only 30,100 pieces. Mint state survivors above MS-61 are seriously rare and the collector looking for a nice and relatively affordable example would be wise to acquire the present example of this "key-date" rarity (PCGS # 8869) .

1911-S $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. The 1911-S $10 is a rare and undervalued issue and at today's levels, choice examples should be acquired whenever the opportunity arises. Only 51,000 pieces were produced and both the overall and high grade survival rate is low. Most of the existing population of uncirculated examples came from a hoard discovered in Europe in the 1970's and subsequently dispersed. David Aker's, in his book on the subject of 20th Century gold stated, "Until the discovery of the aforementioned hoard, which amounted to approximately 40 to 50 pieces, the 1911-S was virtually impossible to find in Mint State". The present example has the characteristics that Akers documented for coins from that hoard. The surfaces are finely granular and frosty with the original skin intact. The coloration is orange gold with patches of steel highlights and accompanied by excellent luster. A small patch of roughness is noted left of the date. The serious gold collector will appreciate the originality and eye appeal of this choice specimen. Housed in an old PCGS green label, fat letter holder. PCGS population of 17 with only 65 finer (PCGS # 8870) .

This specimen has finely granular surfaces enhanced by thick luster and fields that are quite clean. The color is a rich yellow gold and the strike is strong, as is expected for this issue. Liberty's cheek has a small vertical tick mark. A frosty and lovely example (PCGS # 8871) .

1913 $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. A superbly lustrous and vivid orange high quality specimen. This 1913 eagle would make a nice addition to a quality conscious type set. Similar in rarity to the 1912 and a slightly scarcer issue. Known populations above the MS-63 grade level drop dramatically and gems are very rare. Over 430,000 pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and the 1913 eagle is generally a well produced issue. Housed in an old PCGS green label holder.

1913-S $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded AU-58. Along with the 1911-S, the 1913-S is a tough and undervalued Indian Head eagle. Only 66,000 pieces were struck at San Francisco and mint state survivors are scarce to rare from MS60-MS63 and very rare any finer. This choice AU example has above average luster for the issue and grade. The surfaces are medium orange gold and abrasion free. The mintmark is substantially smaller than that found on the 1911-S of this sale. A great opportunity for someone seeking a choice 1913-S without paying the levels required for a truly uncirculated specimen (PCGS # 8874) .

Aside from an old tick mark at the back of the jawbone and another on the reverse under the motto, this stunning example is mark free and very desirable. The luster is excellent and we feel that this specimen should be considered for resubmission for a higher grade. It is not often that one finds a 1914-S eagle with this level of eye appeal. 1915-S $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-61 PQ. Boldy struck and stunning eye appeal. Sharply squared borders accent fields and devices that are amply engulfed with luster. Rare in all mint state grades and excessively rare above MS-64, the 1915-S does generally come well struck but an well struck example coupled with fantastic eye appeal is very rare. Light orange fields with faint steel-blue and teal hues help to make this piece gorgeous. While not likely to reach the MS-63 level, it is our opinion that this specimen should easily reach the MS-62 grade. Identified by a small lint mark, mint made, left of the chin in field. Near the date, the finely granular skin breaks open in a few small patches to reveal several small prooflike patches. PCGS has graded 10 in this grade with 86 finer in all grades (PCGS # 8879) .

1916-S $10 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck and possessing luster far exceeding that normally found on hoard examples of this date. The coloration is a rich orangish gold on both sides and the obverse displays a russet toned film. Closer inspection with a loupe reveals that this film is most likely original and does not mask any disturbing scratches or marks. The surfaces are finely granular with the tips of the feathers quite frosty. Two short tick marks on the eagle's breast and one in the rear portion of the wing are the only serious marks to mention on the reverse. A lustrous and choice example of this San Francisco eagle! A mintage of 138,500 pieces is recorded for this date and the dispersal of several hoards greatly helped to make this one of the most common eagles from the San Francisco Mint. PCGS population of 58 in MS-63 with only 39 finer (PCGS # 8880) .
