Lot 2195
1854-O $3 Gold. PCGS graded AU-50 PQ. A breathtaking and well struck example of this key from the $3.00 gold series. This issue so often comes dipped and scrubbed up that an "AU" piece as choice as this is extremely rare. The present example has extremely clean surfaces and a mark-free cheek. There are light hairlines over fields that have original color and slight reflectivity. The date and mintmark are strongly impressed on the reverse. The New Orleans Mint only produced three dollar gold in 1854, to the tune of 24,000 pieces. Vastly undergraded and choice for the this issue (PCGS # 7971) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,750.

1889 $3 Gold. PCGS graded Proof 63 Cameo PQ. Rich and original gold coloration with a delicate orange-peel effect to the mirrored surfaces. Liberty's device remains unscathed cameo against the strongly reflective fields. Aside from light hairlines in the fields, this choice proof is free from any scratches or planchet impairments. Only 129 proofs were made in 1889 and while all proof three dollar gold is rare, the present specimen goes a step further with regards to its unaltered and aesthetic virtues. 1889 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. The final year of issue of this long-running gold series. A recorded mintage of 2,429 is somewhat deceptive as survivors are found in relative abundance from AU-55 to MS-64. Make no mistake though, accurately graded superb gem examples are not abundant in any form and the present gem is one of the finest known of this issue. Unbelievably thick and swirly luster is present over the entire coin. Coloration is a deep, original orange gold. Every detail is entirely brought up from a strong strike. Liberty's cheek displays fine granularity from minor rust on the dies at the time of striking. Identified by a small lint mark coming off the back of the upright of E in STATES. A small patch of blue film is present on the reverse, original and commonly found on high grade three dollar gold examples. We feel the combination of technical and aesthetic characteristics found on this specimen are choice and much finer than the average MS66. Perfect for the demanding type collector in search of a superb three dollar gold piece! PCGS population of 8 in MS-66 with only 2 finer, both MS-67 (PCGS # 8011) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 18,000.
