Lot 2145
1806 $2.50 Gold Capped Bust. 6 over 5. NGC graded MS-61. Offered here is one of the finest known examples of one of the toughest quarter eagles from U.S. numismatics! Only the 1804 13 Star Reverse is more rare than the 1806/5 and David Akers called this the third rarest date in the entire quarter eagle series. A mere 480 coins were reportedly minted for this variety and only 15 have been graded in all grades at NGC. Population 3; 3 in 62; 1 in 63 as finest graded. The present specimen displays frosty greenish-yellow gold surfaces with sparkling luster over nearly half of the obverse and the entire reverse. A huge plus for this rarity is the absence of any adjustment marks on either obverse or reverse and we note a single, hairline scratch vertically across the obverse device as the only real impairment. The obverse strike is above average with original frost still embedded in the recessed areas. The reverse displays the expected central strike weakness in the horizontal bars of the shield. Faint coppery hues are seen hugging the obverse and reverse periphery, strongest on the reverse. A monumental opportunity to acquire one of the rarest quarter eagles ever produced!

The overdate on this specimen is bold and can be seen in correct lighting without magnification. While the exact die marriage presented here is unquestionably one of the rarest in U.S. numismatics, the reverse die was used independently to strike several other issues during this time. For instance, this reverse die was used to strike quarter eagles of 1805 (Breen-1), 1806 (Breen-2), 1806 (Breen-2, this coin), 1807 (Breen-1) and the 1807 (JR-1) dimes. A "marathon" die to say the least and one which lasted over ten times longer than the average life expectancy of a die during this time.

There are several diagnostics that can be found on this obverse die. First, a fine die crack exists from the top of star 7 through the tops of LIB. Additionally, the two denticles near star 8 and 9 extend outward like "fangs" and the points of stars 8 and 9 at the 5:00 position are shortened.

A monumental opportunity to acquire one of the rarest quarter eagles ever produced!.
Estimated Value $80,000 - 110,000.

1852-D $2.50 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Intense orange gold surfaces with thick, frosty luster. Well struck with all of Liberty's hair and all feather detail fully defined. A shallow scuff is noted on the cheek and some stray, light hairlines are found in the fields. The reverse possesses even more luster and matching sharpness of detail. Above the head of the eagle is a patch of sky blue film, underneath which lies a few scratches. One of the finest known for this low mintage issue, only 4,078 being struck. Noted gold specialist commented on the scarcity of this issue when he commented: "It is very rare in About Uncirculated". PCGS has graded only 5 in this grade with a single MS-63 finer. Unquestionably a rare numismatic offering! (PCGS # 7765) .

1857 $2.50Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. A beautiful blend of rich orange gold color and rose highlights. Unquestionably choice for the assigned grade and free from any serious marks or hairlines. Surfaces and devices are just drenched in original mint frost. For identification purposes, between stars 2 and 3 is a squiggly lint mark in the field. The 1857 quarter eagle, along with other Philadelphia issues in many denominations, is often overlooked and repeatedly sells at what can be perceived as a cheap compared to rarity. A fantastic candidate for a No Motto quarter eagle "type" coin. PCGS population of 10 in MS-64, 1 in MS-66, 1 in MS-67 and 1 in MS-68 as the finest (PCGS # 7782) .

1886 $2.50 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-65. A beautiful, condition census gem quarter eagle from an era defined by small mintages. Between 1880-1886, not a single year had a recorded mintage over 5,000 coins and the 1886 quarter eagle had only 4,000 struck. The gem at hand hast soft, satiny surfaces that are rose gold in coloration. Lovely blue and golden hues are seen on the obverse, hidden near the peripheries. The reverse explodes with electric yellow, blue and mint green toning. A patch of iridescent and opaque toning/film is seen above the eagle's head and appears original. Luster engulfs the complete surfaces of both sides. The only mark to mention is a small planchet flaw to the right of star 4. A extremely scarce issue in gem and one that should be applauded for its originality and beauty! Only 22 gem quarter eagles from 1880-1886 have ever been graded by PCGS. For the 1886, PCGS has graded 2 in MS-65 with a single MS-67 finest (PCGS # 7838) .

1907 $2.50 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. A magnificent gem proof with a delicate balance of strong reflectivity, sparkling metal flow lines, deep gold color and sky-blue and olive toning. Gem proof gold of this caliber is extremely hard to find and while this 20th century issue is not the rarest date, take a closer examination of its aesthetic and technical qualities, for they are astounding. Last presented in the Superior 1990 Sale of the 1872 Amazonian Gold Pattern Set as Lot # 2025 where the cataloguer noted "That offered here is so fresh and nice we consider it at the top end of its range". We note that since that time this beauty has been off the market completely and now takes the concept of "fresh" to a whole new level. Someone needing a top example of a 20th century proof Liberty quarter eagle would be very wise to inspect this gem specimen. PCGS population of 6 in PR-65, 1 in PR-66 and 3 in PR-67 in PF-68 Cameo (PCGS # 7933) .

1911 $2.50 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 66. There is gold, there is proof gold … and then there is matte proof gold! A stunning, microscopically granular gem with deep gold coloration. Luster is never really seen on these issues and the presence of sky-blue iridescence embedded within the granularity will have to satisfy you, which we think it will. Of the 191 proofs struck in 1911, around 35-40 exist in all grades today. Every detail is razor sharp and the eye appeal of this piece of numismatic artwork is magnificent! Truly a piece that needs to be placed in a sophisticated collection of U.S. gold. NGC population of 15 in PF-66, 5 in PF-67 and 1 in PF-68.

Marvelous 1911-D $2.50 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. An absolutely stunning example of the key date in the Indian Head quarter eagle series. Demand has outpaced the limited supply of this issue and there are no signs of this trend stopping. Mint State examples are quite scarce and well struck gems such as this are most elusive. This is an outstanding example, bursting with original mint color and the delicate granular mint luster is fully intact. While grading this issue can be tough, those who view this beauty will be quite impressed with the choice surfaces and lack of marks and should agree with our designation. Mintage of only 55,000 with a PCGS population of 219 in this grade, 9 in MS-65 and 4 in MS-66 (PCGS # 7943) .

1913 $2.50 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 68. An immaculate, shimmering gem and one of the finest proof 1913 quarter eagles in existence! The matte proof and sandblast finish proofs of this series can be quite difficult to grade. The incused design coupled with the finely granular finishes can make telling the difference between a Proof 65 and Proof 66 a serious challenge. Luckily, the absolutely stunning condition of this specimen is so rare that bidders who have previously viewed these proof issues will immediately be able to deduce that this is one of the finest proof examples of all the proof Indian Head quarter eagles. There are no marks that are observable with the naked eye. With close inspection at 6X, one will find a small, circular mint-made depression left of star 9 (for purposes of identification). There is a small vertical break in the granularity less than 0.5mm long just below the first S of STATES. For the date, only 165 were struck and most gold researchers and dealers agree that a sizable chunk of that mintage was most likely melted at year end due to inadequate collector demand at the time. Tied for Finest Known with one other specimen in PF-68 at NGC.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.

1914 $2.50 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 68. A second awesome proof Indian Head quarter eagle ! Again, a sandblast finish is noted on this issue. Walter Breen noted that the 1914 comes with a slightly coarser finish than the 1913 issue and often will appear a shade darker. What better way for our bidders to compare the two issues than by having two potentially Finest Known examples of both the 1913 and 1914 to place side by side for study! The slightly coarser surfaces of this superb 1914 are much more noticeable than the minute difference in coloration between the previous lot and the present lot. The luster on this 1914 proof is outstanding and much more radiant than often seen on any proof gold of this type. The only mark mentionable, solely for the purpose of future pedigree research, is a microscopic black spot right star 9 near the rim. Unquestionably one of the finest in existence and tied for finest known with only 4 others at NGC.
