U.S. Draped Bust Dollars 1799

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1548
1798 Draped Bust Dollar. Heraldic eagle reverse, wide date, 13 arrows. . BB-116. Sharpness of Fine-15. Cleaned long ago and possible rim file. A nice example with sharpness closer to Very Fine. Some silky luster is still seen in the peripheries of both obverse and reverse. The only obtrusive surfaces marks to mention are a vertical scratch in the eagle's right wing close to the shield and a nick at the bottom of the shield. A variety quickly recognized by the "smile" or "shield" shaped die cracks below Liberty's bust. It does appear that someone methodically removed metal from the rim above TED of UNITED.
Estimated Value $600 - 700.

Lot 1549
1799 Draped Bust Dollar, Bolender-9, BB-166. Rarity-1. . Bolender-9, BB-166. Rarity-1. PCGS graded AU-55. Beautiful iridescence is found on both the obverse and reverse and accompanied by thick, swirling luster. A sharply struck example with strong hair detail, feather detail and definition of all of the characteristics that define this variety. A small patch of hairlines is noted at the right of Liberty's neck, near stars 10-13, and this seems to be the only trait keeping this coin from a higher grade. A small planchet depression exists just below the cloud underneath the TE of STATES. A choice AU example that would fit perfectly into a high quality "type" set (PCGS # 6878) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

1799 Draped Bust Dollar. . Bolender-5, Rarity-2. NGC graded AU-53. A dark gray early Draped Bust dollar with a light golden sheen to the surfaces. While not the most lustrous piece, the centering, strike and surface quality are above average for an AU53. Sharp bifurcation is seen on the feet of LIBERTY. Hair definition is bold with only several high points displaying a lighter, silver coloration due to minimal circulation. A solid and original example. NGC has graded 44 in AU-53.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,800.

1799 Draped Bust Dollar. . Bolender-16. ANACS graded AU-50. Our grade EF-40. Well centered and well struck with sharpness finer than the assigned grade of AU50. An old light cleaning has retoned a little and several spots of filmy iridescence exist on the obverse. The rims are sharp and exhibit no bruising. The hair above Liberty's ear, the ribbon and the tops of the eagle's wings are the areas that show the most technical wear from circulation. There are no sharp, random marks or scratches to point out. A satisfying example with plenty of flash for the assigned grade (PCGS # 6878) .

1799 Draped Bust Dollar. . Bolender-21, Rarity-3. NTC graded EF-45. Our grade VF-30. A sharp example cleaned some time ago and artificially retoned. We must say, the retoning job is a good one and matches the normal rich magenta, steel blue and golden hues that often come naturally on these issues. Hairlines are not heavy and the rims are in excellent condition. A short, diagonal scratch left of the date is the only random mark. A variety identified the easiest by observing the position of the 8th star closest to Y coupled with raised die lumps below the AM of AMERICA and below the first star on the obverse.
