Lot 813
1794 Liberty Cap Cent. . Sheldon-43, Rarity-2+. PCGS graded VF-35. Even chocolate surfaces are uniform in appearance. Shallow abrasions are most prominent on the obverse where they are evenly distributed across the device and right field. All detail is sharp except for the OF, a diagnostic for this variety. A very solid example and one that should fetch a healthy number due to the high demand for pleasing early "type". Housed in an older PCGS green label holder (PCGS # 1365) .
Estimated Value $850 - 1,000.

Lot 814
1794 Liberty Cap Cent. "Head of 1794". PCGS graded VF-30. Pleasing light chocolate fields with hints of steel-blue and violet hues hugging the devices and rims. A variety that is always quickly recognized by the pronounced border milling on the left side of the coin which protects the whole left side of the coin from wear. Even on this evenly worn Very Fine example, the hair and cap detail on the left side appear many points finer than Liberty's face or hair above ear. Strike weakness is noted at ERTY of LIBERTY and the corresponding area on the reverse. A small planchet depression is noted right of the denomination. A choice example spared any jarring scratches or nicks (PCGS # 901374) .
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.

Lot 816
1802 Draped Bust Cent. . Sheldon-235. PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown. Known as the Draped Bust Liberty design, this style of cent has long been a favorite of collectors. In fact, the famous numismatist Howard R. Newcomb authored an entire book on just the Draped Bust Cents of 1801, 1802 and 1803! Famed American painter Gilbert Stuart (whose portrait of George Washington is found on the one-dollar bill) is credited with this bust of Liberty, though the actual modeling in relief was performed by the U.S. Mint's John Eckstein. It was then copied by skilled Chief Engraver Robert Scot. Debuting on the silver dollar in the fall of 1795, it was ultimately translated to all of the lesser denominations. The first cents of this type appeared in July of 1796.

Of all the coins produced by the U.S. Mint in its early years, cents were the ones most likely to remain in circulation and be used by a variety of Americans. This most democratic of coins was rarely preserved in mint state intentionally, and those which survive unworn are relatively few in number. Of course, such rarity only increases with the quality of surviving examples. In William Noye's book on large cents, this superb gem is the finest known of its variety (S-235). It's also a strong contender for finest known of its date and type.

The Mint was threatened with closure during the early 1800's, and it was particularly careful to be thrifty in its use of dies. As a consequence, 1802 cents were not paricularly well made, yet this lovely specimen is quite superior to its typical contemporaries. Though its obverse die broke over the letters RTY of LIBERTY, this fine example is still well struck and richly lustrous. A liberal amount of its mint red color is still evident, a very rare condition for cents of this vintage. This specimen is pedigreed to the collections of Howard Newcomb and Dr. Sheldon, and it also served as the plate coins in Noye's fine book on this series. Population 1 with 1 in 67RB by PCGS as finest graded by date not variety (PCGS # 1471) .
Estimated Value $25,000 - 35,000.

Estimated Value $600 - 700.

1803 Draped Bust Cent. Large date, large fraction. . Sheldon-258, Rarity-1. NGC graded MS-66 Brown. An astounding gem with uniform golden-brown surfaces. Fully struck with every detail immaculately defined. Every curl of Liberty's hair is in relief and accented by flowing luster. In fact, luster rolls across the entire coin without hesitation and possess a rarely encountered frosty sheen. Splashes of yellow, steel-blue and olive toning grace the obverse surfaces while patches of graphite toning are seen on the reverse. Technically superior, not a single scratch or abrasion evident in the fields or on the devices. This is the Noyes' Plate Coin for the Sheldon-258 variety and it is easy to see why it was chosen for such an honor. While mint state examples are obtainable in the lower mint state grades, this is the finest known example of this variety graded at NGC. For the date, this is one of only four to ever grade superb gem at NGC with one unattributed MS66, another MS-66 Sheldon-243 and a MS-67 Sheldon-257. NGC population of 1 with none finer.
Estimated Value $22,000 - 24,000.
