Lot 4533
(Kennedy, John F.). An excessively rare collection of seventeen first-generation, unpublished, black and white photographs chronicling President Kennedy's final hour in Dallas on November 22, 1963. The photographs, shot sequentially, measure 3½ x 5 in. and show in order: Air Force One taxiing at Love Airfield in Dallas, the Kennedys and Johnsons debarking from the aircraft, the party greeting a receiving line on the tarmac and mingling with the assembled crowd, the interior of Kennedy's limousine, Governor and Mrs. Connally and the Kennedys entering the limousine, and a view of both couples in the moving limousine with Kennedy rubbing the upper-right part of his head--exactly the spot hit by an assassin's bullet minutes later! The final two photographs, taken hours later, show two views of the Texas School Book Depository, the place from which Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly fired the shots that killed the President. The original set of these photos were developed in February 1964, with this first-generation set made two months later. The photos are accompanied by a copy of a notarized letter of provenance by the son of the photographer, who states that his father had likely obtained access to the President through his association with Dallas policemen. He adds, "…I believe my father knew several of the people with Dallas' underground. I was also told that one of my late uncle's wives was an acquaintance of Jack Ruby…." It is our understanding that the negatives for these photos have been long lost, and that only this set and the original set still exist. A very rare set of images, in fine condition.

Lot 4544
(Presidential Campaign of 1828). Political cartoon entitled "The Pedlar and his Pack or the Desperate Effort, an Over Balance," published during the 1828 presidential race between incumbent President John Quincy Adams and the hero of New Orleans, Andrew Jackson. On February 21, 1815, a general court order convicted six military men of disobeying orders and were ordered shot. Jackson reviewed the sentences 30 days before the executions and let them stand. The decision came back to haunt him during the 1828 presidential campaign, prompting a series of "Coffin" broadsides which accused him of murder.

This cartoon is a satire on the reverse impact of John Binns' anti-Jackson handbills. In the picture, Binns holds a load of coffins on his back. Henry Clay sits atop them at left and President J.Q. Adams at right. Binns says: "I must have an extra dose of Treasury-pap, or down go the Coffins Harry, for I feel faint already." Clay replies: "Hold on Jonny Q - for I find that the people are too much for us, and I'm sinking with Jack and his Coffins!" Adams, holding the presidential chair aloft, says: "I'll hang on to the Chair Harry, in spite of Coffin hand-bills Harris's letter Panama mission or the wishes of the People." One tear at left edge, else fine. Matted and framed to an overall size of 17½ x 22 inches; some nicks to frame.
