$5 Gold Liberty. 1865. PCGS graded Proof 64 Deep Cameo. A truly marvelous example of this No Motto proof rarity! Light golden fields are fully reflective and the device of Liberty is fully frosted to create an outstanding Deep Cameo effect. Only 25 proofs were made in 1865, a year in which only 1,270 business strikes were made as well. As a result, obtaining an 1865 half eagle in either striking of any grade is a serious accomplishment. The present coin is as pristine as one could imagine and disregarding a few tiny handling marks, should be considered a gem example. Identified by a small vertical nick at the right base of the neck.
Perhaps a dozen of the 25 minted, and probably less, can be accounted for today. Garrett, Trompeter, Eliasberg and Bass all managed to acquire top notch examples of this issue and here is an opportunity for the advanced numismatist to join those ranks. Tied for the Finest Known Deep Cameo example as PCGS has graded only 2 DCAM specimens, both in PR64DCAM (PCGS # 98455) .
Estimated Value $35,000 - 45,000.

Lot 1645
$5 Gold Liberty. 1867. NGC graded AU-55. The early "With Motto" half eagles from the Philadelphia Mint are notorious for their low mintages, low surviving populatoins and prices that have not reflected their true scarcity. In 1867, the second year of "With Motto" coinage, the Philadelphia Mint struck 6,870 half eagles. Of this original mintage, perhaps 2-3 uncirculated examples are known and acquiring an AU55 to AU58 example is the most likely scenario for only a handful of collectors. NGC population is 8 in AU55, 11 in AU58 and a single MS60 as finest.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,200.

Lot 1646
$5 Gold Liberty. 1868-S. NGC graded AU-58. A well struck example of an issue that often comes quite weak. Light yellow gold coloration, a nice change from the often seen orange-gold coins from San Francisco. There are two thin scratches to the right of the 4th star. Satiny luster is seen in the protected areas of the obverse and exists more heavily on the reverse.
When the San Francisco Mint started striking With Motto half eagles, mintage figures shot up significantly from the previously small mintages of the No Motto issues from the late 1850's and early 1860's. In 1868, the San Francisco Mint produced 52,000 half eagles and almost all went into circulation. Therefore, high grade specimens are very rare and choice AU coins are in the Condition Census range.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,800.

Lot 1647
$5 Gold Liberty. 1868-S. ANACS graded AU-58. A rare date With Motto half eagle from the San Francisco Mint. A modest mintage figure of 52,000 pieces saw a large percentage of the coins go directly into circulation. Choice AU examples are seldomly encountered and the mint state population is represented by two NGC examples, an MS60 and a single MS61. The present coin has light hairlines in the fields that have retoned a dark orange gold color. The strike is very bold and thick luster still exists on both obverse and reverse (PCGS # 8316) .
Estimated Value $3,300 - 3,600.

$5 Gold Liberty. 1891-CC. NGC graded MS-65. Gorgeous, uninterrupted satiny luster over rose-gold to orange-gold surfaces. A fantastic Carson City rarity and one of the finest known! The obverse is pristine with only the faintest hairline mark under the bun of Liberty's hair. On the reverse, the eagle is frosty and surrounded by rich satiny luster. A mint made planchet flaw under the first A of AMERICA is the best way to identify this superb gem specimen.

The Carson City Mint began producing half eagles in 1870 and continued until 1884, when they stopped production for a period of 5 years. Production resumed in 1890 and continued only until 1893 when the Carson City issued its' final half eagle. Obtaining a gem Carson City example before 1884 is extremely difficult and to realistically have a chance of obtaining a gem Carson City half eagle, one has to look to the period of 1890-1893. This superb 1891 Carson City specimen represents a grand opportunity to acquire one of the few gems that exist. NGC has graded 6 with none finer but we highly suspect this figure is a tad higher than it should be.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.

$5 Gold Liberty. 1904-S. PCGS graded MS-64. Light original film over otherwise radiant and lustrous fields. Upon closer inspection with magnification one will not find a multitude of hairlines under the film. The surfaces possess rich orange-gold coloration and the absence of any disturbing marks. The 1904-S half eagle had a mintage of only 97,000 pieces, a significant drop after the large scale productions of the 1901-S, 1902-S and 1903-S. Considered a better date in all mint state grades, this specimen is a significant rarity and probably undervalued in the present near-gem condition. PCGS has graded 2 with only 5 finer (PCGS # 8410) .

$5 Gold Liberty. 1907. NGC graded MS-68. A serious condition rarity in this superb gem grade and Tied for Finest Known! The surfaces and skin are so original that the rich gold coloration has faint hints of blue in protected areas. Liberty's device is strong and the metal flow on the cheek has a velvety appearance that shifts under illumination (a look seen only on the finest rare gold). Reverse quality is just as impressive and reassures the bidder that they are bidding on one of the Finest from the whole Coronet Liberty Head half eagle series. Identified by a small mint made planchet depression to the lower right of star 6 (0.5mm).

While 626,100 half eagles were struck at Philadelphia in 1907, survival rates drop off dramatically in grades above MS64. Most would find it difficult to locate a nice and properly graded MS66 example let alone trying to find an example as impressive and dignified as this specimen. Bidders will have to "step-up" in order to acquire this beauty.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

$5 Gold Indian. 1908. PCGS graded Proof 61. A very desirable issue from U.S. gold coinage and presented here in a very uncommon grade. It is not uncommon to see offerings of superb gem examples of these Indian Head proof issues, 1908-1915, and the prices can be quite high for the gem examples. What is very unusual is to have the opportunity to purchase one of these proofs in Proof 61 or 62. PCGS has graded only 2 Proof 61 examples and only 3 PR63 examples from the entire series, 1908-1915. This specimen possesses pleasing color and an uninterrupted matte finish. No disturbing marks or scratches exist.

The U.S. Mint report states that 167 proofs were made in 1908. At the time of the introduction of these new proofs, the U.S. public was hesitant to accept the matte finishes, desiring the brilliant proofs instead. Lack of collector interest led to many being spent and/or melted while mintage figures subsequently declined the following years. Today these matte proof issues are considered "classcis" within United States gold coinage (PCGS # 8539) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.
