Morgan Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 961
Morgan Dollar. 1878-CC. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. Yet another fresh Carson City dollar with 100% white surfaces, untouched devices and exceptional eye appeal. Well struck with a cheek that has a silver orange-peel effect due to the insanely pristine condition of this coin. Pay careful attention to this one as PCGS has graded only 4 coins one point finer and we feel this example gives that group some fierce competition (PCGS # 7080) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

Morgan Dollar. 1879-CC. PCGS graded MS-64 Deep Mirror Prooflike PQ. Gorgeous deep mirrored fields that still show signs of the original die polish lines. Liberty and the eagle are just soaked in mint frost. The cheek and neck are pristine and lustrous. There appears to be an old fingerprint that touched the obverse field at 7:00 years ago. This "prehistoric" fingerprint has settled into the natural look of the coin and is not distracting. Reverse fields are flashy and display light lavender toning. Unquestionably one of the finest 1879-CC dollars to exist! PCGS population of 20 in 64DMPL with only 2 in MS65DMPL (PCGS # 97087) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Morgan Dollar. 1880-CC, 80 over 79. Reverse of 1878. PCGS graded MS-66. Ridiculously immaculate frosty gem! This coin has the appearance that it has been stored in a "Sub-Zero" freezer for ten years. Original mint frost covers every aspect of this coin and breaks in the "skin" are few and far between. Overdate is clear, with traces of the 7 and 9 clear within the 80. Tied for Finest Graded by PCGS with a population report of 36 with none finer (PCGS # 7108) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Morgan Dollar. 1880-CC, 8 over high 7. Reverse of 1879. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. Another perfectly preserved Carson City dollar, hidden from the numismatic market for almost two decades. Dynamite eye appeal with pure white surfaces, radiant luster and devices covered in mint frost. A slight reflective quality to the fields, further enhancing the look of this beautiful gem! When catalogued in the Wayne Miller Collectoin this piece was afforded the comment "Among the finest known" and we could not agree more! PCGS population of 34 in MS66 with 5 known in MS67 as finest. (PCGS # 7102) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Morgan Dollar. 1881-CC. PCGS graded MS-67. A superb white gem with almost perfect cheeks. Fully radial and vibrant luster over microgranular surfaces. The immaculate surfaces are frosty and absolutely splendid! The PCGS population reports 85 in this lofty grade with only 3 better by a point. It would be fun to match this one along side any of those three to see if there is any real difference (PCGS # 7126) .

Morgan Dollar. 1883-CC. PCGS graded MS-67. Phenomenally choice Carson City dollar in blast white, superb gem condition! While the 1893-CC is one of the easiest Morgan Dollars to acquire in nice gem condition, this piece goes the extra mile in terms of eye appeal. PCGS has graded only 3 examples finer (PCGS # 7144) .

Morgan Dollar. 1885-CC. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. An untouched white and frosty Carson City gem! An issue that is relatively available in MS66, but this fresh coin is surely better than most. In fact, were it not for a small nick just above the eye this coin could easily be more than just one point finer than MS66 (PCGS # 7160) .

Morgan Dollar. 1889-CC. PCGS graded MS-63 Prooflike PQ. A key issue in the Morgan Dollar Series! The cheek and neck detail on this flashy coin is amazingly clean. Crisp luster rotates around the fields. Proof-like fields are not subdued by a light, original film on the surfaces. On the reverse, the eagle gets the same respect as Liberty's device. We note some extremely light hairlines under the eagle's wings but that is the extent to which any hairlines exist. In our opinion, this coin is so under graded for an 1889-CC that it is ridiculous! PCGS population of 17 in MS63PL with only 4 in MS64PL as finest (PCGS # 7191) .

Morgan Dollar. 1890-CC. PCGS graded MS-65 Prooflike PQ. Slightly over 18 years ago this incredible dollar was sold as part of the fabulous Wayne Miller Collection of Morgan and Peace dollars. Since that time, this incredible deep cameo and frosty gem has been off the market, held tightly in another top-notch collection of Carson City dollars. That collection, being offered here today, gives one the chance to purchase a dollar with deeply mirrored fields and bright white, frosty devices.

When catalogued in the Wayne Miller Collection this piece was described as "1890-CC Mint State 65+". We fully agree that today this coin is still excessively PQ and choice. As a prooflike specimen this coin is probably the finest PL graded for the issue but why stop there, this beauty should be resubmitted for DMPL designation….its' true status. PCGS population as MS65PL of 7 with none finer! (PCGS # 7199) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000.

Morgan Dollar. 1892-CC. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. Deeply reflective fields behind a totally "frosted" Liberty will leave everyone who views this example wondering what happen to the "PL" or "DMPL" letters that should be accompanying the grade. Well struck and just as absolutely pleasing as a top-notch example of this issue could be! Faint die crack through the date, stars, E.PLURIBUS and UNUM. The face and cheek of Liberty are far above the average gem example seen. When catalogued in the Wayne Miller Collection this piece was described as "Superb Gem Deep Mirror Prooflike. One of the Finest Known specimens" and we are sure most of you will agree with that view. PCGS population of 187 in MS65, 16 in MS66 and 2 in MS67 (PCGS # 7214) .

Morgan Dollar. 1893-CC. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. The Carson City Mint produced only 677,000 dollars in 1893 and this is one of the finest survivors from that number! Soothing and almost flawless satiny surfaces. This "gem" example should be sent back to PCGS for upgrade. Identified by a small lint mark coming off the left side of the lower loop of the 8 in the date and continuing to the border below. This completely fresh example was purchased by Wayne Miller from Don Harris in 1972 (as noted when the Miller Collection was sold). Therefore over the past 32 years, two individuals have owned this specimen and now it is time to "pass the torch". PCGS has graded 321 in MS64 with only 7 examples achieving the MS65 grade. (PCGS # 7222) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 10,000.

Morgan Dollar. 1880-CC, 80 over 79. Reverse of 1878. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. VAM-7. A frosty white near gem example from Carson City. 8 repunched over 7 and the bottom of the stem of 7 is visible as a dash just below the second 8. The 0 shows no part of the 9. Great eye appeal is enchanced even further by loads of original mint frost and thick luster.
The 1880-CC issue is well known to have had problems right from the beginning. While an original mintage of 591,000 coins were produced, the Annual Assay Commission then discovered some were defective with low fineness and subsequently melted 96,000 coins from the original mintage. The strike on this issue can range from weak to strong and locating a high quality example with good eye appeal can be a challenge. The buyer of this lot will be pleased knowing that they met the challenge and found a high quality piece (PCGS # 7108) .
