Lot 2482
1795 $5 Capped Bust. Small eagle. PCGS graded AU-55 PQ. A boldly struck example of our first half eagle with fully defined hair details and only a touch of light friction on the highest points. The planchet is unusually clean with no problems of any kind. This beauty is loaded with mint luster with a hint of delicate golden-orange toning about the extreme borders, thus our Premium Quality designation. Pop of 55 in this grade (PCGS # 8066) .
Estimated Value $19,000 - 22,000.

1795 $5 Capped Bust. Small eagle. PCGS graded EF-45. Well struck and free from adjustment marks. We note some light scratches in the reverse field around the head of the eagle, but these are not too serious. Light golden-orange hues mixed with traces of mint luster rests within the borders on both sides. Our first gold coin and always in great demand. In a 1st generation PCGS holder.

1804 $5 Capped Bust. PCGS graded MS-60 PQ. An interesting die crack bisects the obverse from 6 to 12 o'clock. Well struck on a problem free planchet and loaded with frosty mint luster. No one will argue with our "Premium Quality" designation on this little beauty as this example is destined to be resubmitted for a higher grade. In an old green holder.

1807 $5 Capped Bust. Bust right. PCGS graded AU-55. As usual, a trifle soft in the centers as struck, nonetheless, the surfaces are lustrous and remarkably free from marks and imperfections. Struck in natural greenish yellow gold with a hint of toning about the peripheries. A lovely example of the popular Capped Bust to right design (PCGS # 8092) .

1808 $5 Capped Draped Bust. Miller-107, Breen 4-B, R.3. PCGS graded MS-62. A frosty, Mint State example with sunny yellow luster on both sides. Well struck and problem-free. Housed in an older-generation, green-label holder and, yes, we agree that this one appears to be undergraded. Perfect for type purposes. Miller calls this the most common of the 1808 Half Eagle varieties and notes that it is usually found in high grades. PCGS reports 14 in this grade, 12 in MS-63, 3 in MS-64, and 1 in MS-65 (PCGS # 8102) .

1808 $5 Capped Draped Bust. PCGS graded AU-58 PQ. A well struck example with all details fully defined and a coin with excellent eye appeal. The planchet is problem free and the surfaces still retain plenty of mint lust; all is overlaid with rich golden-orange and rose color toning. A Premium Quality example of the popular Capped Bust to Left type (PCGS # 8102) .
Estimated Value $3,800 - 4,200.

1810 $5 Capped Draped Bust. Large date, large 5. Miller 109, B-1A, R.3. NGC graded MS-61. Bright, yellow-gold surfaces. Strong luster and a fresh, original appearance. Struck from clashed dies, with evidence of the contact visible on both sides. Faint adjustment marks in the center of the obverse, one small crevice (possibly natural) across Liberty's cheek, otherwise quite well-preserved.

1812 $5 Capped Draped Bust. Miller 117, Breen-1A, Large Date, Close 5D. NGC graded MS-65. A gem example of the popular Capped Bust type. Frosty, lustrous surfaces and a sunny, yellow color. Boldly struck details. Tied with 9 others as the finest graded by NGC (doubtless, with some duplication). The only finer example is a PCGS MS-66, offered in the 1999 issue of Coin World for $175,000 (you can buy this one for less)! For a comparable piece, we note that the Bass coin realized $35,650 when it reappeared on the market in 2002 (then in a PCGS MS-65 holder).

Lot 2494
1813 $5 Capped Head. Miller-120, Unlisted in Breen. NGC graded MS-61. An exceedingly rare variety, listed as Rarity 7 by Miller, unlisted by Breen, and, even more importantly, a variety missing from the vast Bass collection. Both 1813 varieties share a common obverse, so one must go to the reverses to tell the two apart. Here are the diagnostics for this variety: Right base of second T in STATES directly over the left side of the I in PLURIBUS (on Miller 119, the right base is over the center of the I). Also, on Miller 120 the lowest arrowhead points to the serif of the I; on Miller 119, the arrowhead points to the center of the I.

The example offered here features ample mint luster, faint surface abrasions, and no noticeable marks. The obverse is mostly yellow in color, while the reverse sports some attractive, coppery toning. As a type coin, this piece possesses considerable merit; as a rare variety, it should command a nice premium.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

1834 $5 Classic Head. Crosslet 4. SEGS graded MS-63. A well struck example of this elusive variety that is seldom seen in grades higher than EF. This example still retains plenty of mint luster to justify a Mint State classification with some scattered light hairlines and light marks in the fields. We feel a grade of MS-60 is more appropriate and our estimate reflects this.

1836 $5 Classic Head. PCGS graded MS-61. A gorgeous looking "MS-61" with rich golden-orange mint color. We note a light surfaces scrape behind the head which probably caused PCGS to downgrade this coin by a point or so. Nevertheless, this lovely Classic Head example has plenty of eye-appeal and should bring well over what an ordinary "MS-61" is worth. Pop of 16 (PCGS # 8174) .

Well struck from dies that were slightly out-of-parallel, the only weakness appearing in the denticles at the base of the obverse and the corresponding area atop the reverse.
