Lot 2463
1915 $2.50 Indian. NGC graded Proof 64. A superlative Matte Proof Quarter Eagle and one of only 100 Proofs struck (the lowest mintage for the entire series). Soft, pale luster and a pleasing, orange toning. The surfaces are a joy to behold, with no shiny spots or other impairments to the fragile, exposed surfaces. Bela Lyon Pratt's unusual incuse design is both beautiful but impractical for coinage. People were concerned about dirt, filth, and germs accumulating in the recessed areas and collectors were (and are) concerned about how well the coins would hold up in circulation. As expected, Gem examples, whether Proof or Mint State, are scarce to rare. The lovely Proof offered here is, in our opinion, conservatively graded, thus representing great value for the grade. Pop of 13 with 12 in PF-65, 9 in PF-66 and 2 in PF-67.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.
