Lot 2126
Great Britain. Pattern Sovereign, 1893. Queen Victoria is veiled and wears the famous Small Crown in this exquisite pattern. Reeded edge. Double-thick, called Piedfort. This is the same design as listed in gold by Wilson and Rasmussen (their #340), and also identical to the wonderful Gem example (but not double thick) we sold as Lot 393 in our first Terner sale. This coin has a remarkably similar color to that piece, but shows some very faint hairlines. Mirrors are intact, glittering! If anything, the strike on this piece is even more tack-sharp than we saw on the previously sold specimen. Wonderful engraving, and extreme rarity. A great coin for the serious student and collector of the sovereign series! Important. PCGS graded Proof 63.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 15,000.

Great Britain. Shilling, 1902. Edward VII. S-3982. Why the presence of such a "common" coin in a sale of this magnitude? Years ago Dr Terner knew what many are only now discovering, that most coins of this reign are really beat up. Super-nice ones, and they don't get much better than this shilling, are just plain rare in grade. Sharply struck on the lion's nose and elsewhere, and having beautiful iridescent golden blue-green toning. After this coin sells, see how many others you can locate in MS64 or MS65. PCGS graded MS-65.
Estimated Value $250 - 400.

Great Britain. Queen Victoria (1837-1901), 1838 silver coronation medal, by Pistrucci. Plain edge. Design identical to the gold specimen. Portrait faces left in high relief, the queen's hair in a bun, signed "B.P." in the field under the exergue. "VICTORIA D. G. BRITANNIARUM REGINA F. D." surrounding. Reverse shows the three allegorical muses (representing the three kingdoms of the UK) offering the crown to young Princess Victoria, who is seated and holding the orb in her right hand and the scepter in her left, a lion behind her with his paw on the fasces. Legend above the coronation scene reads "ERIMUS TIBI NOBILE REGNUM." The legend continues in the exergue in three lines as follows: "INAUGURATA / DIE JUN 11 XXVIII / MDCCCXXXVIII." Hence the coronation day was June 28, 1838. 36.66 mm in diameter. Eimer-1315, the official Royal Mint issue. Choice prooflike Uncirculated, as made except for some tiny hairlines and of course the toning has occurred over the past 166 years, a lovely iridescent light bluish gold. Much nicer than the typical piece found in England or elsewhere. The engraving quality, as the photos illustrate, is staggering!

Great Britain - Scotland. Pattern Shilling, 1799. George III, an elegant engraving of the king in full armor. Scottish crests in the angles of the reverse shield. Conceived by Colonel Fullarton (the correct spelling of his name, although usually given as "Fullerton"), engraved by Milton. These were long thought to be private patterns but new research has suggested that they were seriously considered at the time of their minting to replace the old shilling, which by 1799 was no longer in production (the 1787 type). This was a time generally of metal shortage, a time of war in Europe, so nothing actually came of this charming experiment. This shilling is from a set which originally would have included a number of denominations, farthing through halfcrown. Dr Terner adored it as an example of what might have been. Its quality, while given a fairly mundane number grade, is simply stunning. Deep mirrors accented by truly exquisite iridescent blue and gold colors. A wonderful piece! PCGS graded Proof 64.
