Great Britain. Gothic Crown, 1847. Queen Victoria. "Undecimo" Lettered Edge. S-3883. Dav-106; KM-744. What collection could be without a Gothic crown? Well, of course, none. While Dr Terner's focus was sharply honed on gold coins, he found the engraving and the rarity of nice examples of the various copper and silver issues irresistible. He also thought them reasonably priced, to say the least, in the best grades. This Gothic crown just glitters with 1847 sparkle, and its iridescent toning is captivating, as our photos so clearly show. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo.

Great Britain. Sixpence, 1858. Victoria Young Head. S-3908; KM-733.1. While Dr Terner focused on Proof samples of the copper and silver coinages, as study pieces, sometimes he found a currency piece so stunning that he couldn't resist owning it, such as this marvelous coin. Superb Gem Uncirculated, splendid bright golden greenish blue iridescence. A curious diebreak appears at the rim about 3 o'clock obverse and reappears at the opposite rim, "disappearing" beneath the queen's portrait. The eye-appeal of this coin is extraordinary.   Great Britain. Pattern Penny, 1860. Queen Victoria. Peck-2121. Struck in silver. Plain edge. Peck calls this Very Rare. These were wonderfully conceived pieces, and mostly show up in copper, usually only when great collections are offered. Interested collectors should review Peck's extensive comments beginning on page 483 of his reference work, for they are interesting. This is a lovely example, with deep silvery gray surfaces enhanced by some delightful iridescence. The image of Britannia on the reverse contains virtually every historic symbol of the land! Purchased mainly to study the engraving, which is exemplary even for the Victorian age. PCGS graded Proof 64.

Great Britain. Pattern HalfPenny, 1868. Struck in copper-nickel. Victoria, Bun Head, much like the pieces listed as S-3956. Peck-1794, listed as Rare. This is generally listed as a pattern but might also be thought of as an experimental strike. It's quite rare and also unusually choice. Pleasing gray color with some iridescence, and nice mirror fields. A soft cameo effect is also notable. Peck's comments are interesting, noting that a set was minted as a sample of what would have been the first C-N or non-bronze (or copper) subsidiary coinage of the United Kingdom. The alloy was adopted for use in Jamaica in 1869, but never for home rule. Purchased for study purposes. PCGS graded Proof 65.

Great Britain. Pattern Shilling (or Sovereign?), 1875. Queen Victoria. St George and dragon on reverse! Reeded edge. ESC-1404. R6: extremely rare, just 3 or 4 known. Dr Terner felt that this pattern could easily have been intended for a sovereign, considering its obvious design alliance to the famed Pistrucci/Wyon image of the dragon-slayer. In any event, it's a spectacular example of the experimental Coronet Head which was never used for UK currency coins, despite its obvious beauty. Speaking of beauty, this coin has it all!   Great Britain. Pattern Proof Crown, 1887. Queen Victoria, veiled and wearing the famous, bejeweled "small crown," used on state occasions. ESC-343; KM-ppn 105. Engraved by J.R. Thomas for Spink. Silver. Plain edge. ESC rates this pattern R5: extremely rare, just 5-10 known! See comments under the 1887 gold sixpence of this design, for an explanation of its interest to Dr Terner. A magnificent example of this most elegant of all Victorian pattern crowns; without doubt the finest known, exhibiting nearly flawless surfaces together with splendid, bright silvery blue iridescence and splashes of gold toning. Bought for Dr Terner from the grandson of the designer, hence this coin was doubtless J.R. Thomas's own specimen! No finer provenance could exist. Previously in an NGC PR66 slab, but reconsidered in order to be part of the Terner Registry set. The cataloguer cannot understand why PCGS did not rate this higher, but it doesn't matter much because it's a coin without equal. PCGS graded Proof 64.
