Lot 2043
Great Britain. Shilling, 1816. George III. S-3790; KM-666. First year of what was at the time of issue known as the "new coinage," made at the recently opened Royal Mint on Tower Hill, just north of the ancient Tower of London. The coinage presses used to strike this coin had been purchased from the defunct Soho Mint. Superb Gem BU, a spectacular two-tone coin: the obverse is brilliant with a white cameo of the king surrounded by a bright gold halo of iridescence, while the reverse is toned an exquisite dark-blue charcoal-gray color. Sharply struck, of course. About as fine an example as may be found. Purchased to compare its engraving with that of the gold patterns of this period. PCGS graded MS-66.
Estimated Value $350 - 500.

Lot 2056
Great Britain. Crown, 1820. George III. S-3787; KM-675; Dav-103. LX edge. Last and rarest date of this short-lived, classic crown featuring (on its reverse) Saint George slaying the dragon and surrounded by the Order of the Garter engraved on a band. This reverse was modified only a year later for the crowns of George IV, when the Garter band was removed and the St George motif was enlarged; but on the crowns of George III, with the Garter band around St George, the design seems more elegant and refined. King George III, of course, intentionally resembles a Roman emperor with his hair tied up in a laurel wreath. Purchased as a study piece to compare the engraving with that found on the gold coins of this period. This specimen is one of the finest examples seen of its design type. Gem BU, highly lustrous with pale gold toning outlining the legends on both sides. Gorgeous! PCGS graded MS-65.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

Great Britain. Crown, 1821. George IV. S-3805; KM-680.1; Dav-104. "SECUNDO" edge regnal date. Purchased to study the die-work against that used on the gold of this time period. This unusual piece is prooflike and has a gleaming, brilliant snow-white luster, with a wonderfully sharp strike, and virtually no bagmarks. It exhibits an exceptional, "hard" luster, producing dramatic eye-appeal. A small, light scuff down George's neck, plus a few microscopic hairlines, are noted for accuracy. Gem prooflike BU. Splendid, deep strike. Booming luster. It is almost impossible to find a coin of this quality in the current market. PCGS graded MS-65.

Lot 2062
Great Britain. Proof Shilling, 1821. George IV. Laureate Head. Crowned garnished shield on reverse. S-3810; KM-679. This obverse-reverse combination was used for only one year, and even so-so MS coins are quite scarce. Despite the modest Spink catalogue valuation, Proofs are very rare when considered in high grade; most, as explained under the 1787 Proof shilling, have been badly handled and are today impaired. Purchased as a study piece to compare die-work against that of the Proof sovereign. Gem Proof, rich original gray toning with some beautiful light gold and lilac-blue iridescence. A real beauty! PCGS graded Proof 65.
Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,250.

Lot 2063
Great Britain. Sixpence, 1821. George IV Laureate Head combined with the Garnished Shield reverse. S-3813; KM-678. A simply splendid example of this elusive, one-year type. This elegantly engraved coin "speaks of its age," a time of flamboyance and fancy dress, and of fine manners. A time long gone but fondly remembered. Superb Pristine Gem prooflike Uncirculated with fabulous silver and gold iridescent toning. Finest one certified, and the only coin seen by the cataloguer at this quality level, in more than 25 years of examining the best British coins. Even in the remarkable Terner Collection, this coin is a standout. PCGS graded MS-68.

Lot 2064
Great Britain. Pattern Shilling, 1825. George IV. Bare Head. Small Lion reverse. Reeded edge. ESC-1264. R5: extremely rare, just 5 to 10 known. Similar to the currency issue, but the lion is smaller as is the narrower and more high-relief crown under him. This coin was bought for its sheer beauty, both in design and in quality of preservation, which is fabulous. Superb Gem Proof, marvelous violet-gold iridescent toning on obverse, exquisite golden blue and silvery green iridescence on reverse. This stunning pattern, a classic statement of the Georgian Age, is seen only occasionally, and this specimen is absolutely the finest one encountered in some 25 years of looking at great coins. PCGS graded Proof 66.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,500.

Great Britain. Shilling, 1825. George IV, Laureate Head; garter-shield reverse. S-3811; KM-687. Over many years, this cataloguer has found this to be a rare type in high grade, extremely difficult to find in this magnificent condition. Superb Gem Uncirculated, semi-prooflike surfaces, unusually bold strike with fully detailed faces on the lions and leopards in the reverse shield (although the bottom of the Order of the Garter is slightly soft), and lovely iridescent silvery gold and pale blue toning. Truly exceptional. Bought to study the engraving details against those of the sovereign of this era. PCGS graded MS-66.
