Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 641
1804 Draped Bust Quarter Dollar. Sharpness of EF-45. Mostly well struck with lots of detail for the grade. We note a light scratch in the left obverse field. This high grade example was cleaned and retoned years ago. Long recognized as one of the rareties in the quarter series, in fact, this date which has a similar mintage to the 1796 is much rarer as fewer were saved as survivors.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1806 Draped Bust Quarter Dollar. Browning-5a. Rarity-6. PCGS graded MS-63. An old friend from 1987, when we sold it (as Superior Galleries) as part of the Cal Neva Club collection: "…Perfect obverse die; reverse crack from the left wing to the rim…This is one of the finest Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle Quarters we have handled in many years. While this coin has many factors in its favor, what immediately comes to mind is its strictly original appearance. Both sides are lustrous and exhibit rich, reddish gold undertones below even rose gray surfaces. The obverse is well struck while the central reverse is, as always, weak. This lovely coin has virginal surfaces and we feel that the grade, which PCGS has assigned it, was somewhat on the conservative side. Besides being an exceptional type coin, this is a very rare variety in this grade and we regard this coin as a candidate for one of the Finest Known. Discovered in Europe a few years ago." Still housed in the first-generation, green-label holder in which it originally appeared!
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

1825 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. 5 over 4. Browning-3, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-64. A gorgeous, Prooflike example that in former years would have been called a Proof (in fact, Breen mentions an untraced Proof of this particular variety). The fields are fully reflective, with no patches of satiny luster and the toning is a scrumptious blend of greens, reds and golds. The strike is also excellent, but not quite up to the standards required of a Proof. Struck from an early state of the dies, leaving no question that this was an 1825/4 overdate. This piece compares favorably, and is decidedly more Prooflike, than the NGC MS-65 Eliasberg coin. Housed in an old NGC holder and worth a second look.

Lot 650
1838 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. No drapery. PCGS graded MS-64. Desirable first-year-of-issue for the lengthy Seated Liberty series. Scarce, "No Drapery" type, not the result of excessive die polishing but because of a deliberate omission of the drapery beneath the elbow of Liberty's arm that holds the staff (drapery was added later to balance the artistic effect of the design). Wholesome, original toning consists of dusky grays changing to steel-blue iridescence at the rims, with some golden highlights noted on the reverse. Sharply struck in the centers, but weak on some of the stars and denticles. Overall, this is a remarkable coin for the date and certainly for the grade. Housed in an old, green-label PCGS holder, generally perceived as coming from a time of more conservative grading standards. PCGS reports 21 in this grade, 2 in MS-65, 2 in MS-66, 1 in MS-68, so a resubmission may turn out to be a worthwhile effort (PCGS # 5391) .

1853 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows and rays. NGC graded MS-63. Lightly toned in gold on the obverse, with a patch of blue at upper left. The reverse is very colorful, combining reds and blues at the peripheries, surrounding a center of gold. The arrowheads on either side of the date and the sunny rays on the reverse were signals that the weight had been reduced to make the production of the coins more cost-effective and, hopefully, profitable. A popular type coin that is always in demand.

1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head. Super-frosty, with intense cartwheel luster swirling beneath a whisper of lilac toning. This is the key date of the series and the first year of issue. Uncirculated examples are very rare because virtually the entire mintage of only 52,000 entered circulation before the public was even made aware of their existence! Technically (and legally), this type should not even have been introduced until 1917, since Barber's design didn't officially expire until the end of 1916. Much hullabaloo has been made in the past about Liberty's naked torso -- for instance, Breen hyper-ventilated, without any evidence whatsoever, that some "Society for the Suppression of Vice" put political pressure on Mint officials to place a cover-up on Miss Liberty. In reality, the change was made at the request of the designer, Hermon MacNeil, who acknowledged the technical shortcomings of the design and who agreed to the design changes that occurred in 1917. It is these stories that add to the allure of this immensely popular coin.

1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 Full Head. Here is a classic rarity and in a choice grade, with a full head no less! Mint records show 52,000 were struck, most of which promptly entered circulation. Some were saved as the first of their issue, and the originality of this piece clearly confirms this. Well struck for this issue, about a third of which show a full head, the majority weaker on the head and shield than seen here. This lustrous beauty is toned with a mottling of silvery and darker shades of grey. Always in demand as the rarity of the series, aside from the overdate.
