A rare Elizabethan vellum indenture (1568), 10½ x 10 inches, written entirely in Latin and mentioning adjacent land belonging to the family of Queen Elizabeth I's future favorite, Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, who would be executed for treason in 1601. The beautiful vellum deed concerns a gentleman, "John Baron in the region of the viscountcy of Essex," who has joint ownership with John Dallyn "of a certain the viscountcy of Leden in the same region" and who is transferring three "drafta" of land (ten acres) to Dallyn, "Standing between the crop area garden there named Yadmall Irene to the East and a certain acreage presently belonging to a Bridget, to the West…." The last paragraph states, "…Given on the nineteenth day of September in the tenth year of the reign of Our Queen Elizabeth…." Signed and sealed by John Baron in the presence of Edward Lymit and Thomas Lygania. A beautiful calligraphic manuscript, written in dark brown ink and accompanied by a complete English translation. Lot 456
Elizabethan Vellum Deed. A beautifully-penned English vellum deed, approximately 10½ x 18 in., dated August 30, 1583, "the 25th year of the glorious Reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England." This deed, in Latin, indicates the conveyance of property in Bray in Cokeham in the County of Berkshire between several parties whose addresses include Eaton. One of those mentioned is William Daye, then Provost of Eaton College. The parties also include Robert Strope, Thomas Rydley, and Francis Pigot, all of whom sign at the bottom of the indenture, as well as William Coxe of Eaton in Winsor, and William Raynor, also of Eaton. Lengthy docket information on verso. Beautifully intact, with one small hole in vellum at fold. Large red wax seal has incused indistinct inside image of a woman's head (possibly Queen Elizabeth). This document deserves some scholarly research as to the identities of the aforementioned gentlemen. Normal folds, with light to heavier soiling, mostly to the back of the document. An excellent display item.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,500.

(Charles I - English Civil War). 1647 English Civil War pamphlet: An Answer To A Letter Written at Oxford And superscribed to Dr. Samuel Turner, Concerning the Church, and the Revenues thereof. Wherein is shewed, how impossible it is for the King with a good conscience to yeeld to the change of Church-Government by Bishops, or tothe alienating the Lands of the Church. 7 x 5½ in., 53 pp. Owner's signature "W. Stonehouse" on front cover. Light bend crease of upper right corner pages and back page with lower right corner crease. Some soiling to front page and a couple of small paper holes and flaws. Internal moderate toning; otherwise, bright and readable. On May 5, 1646, Charles I was captured by Scottish forces, who wanted him to agree to the introduction of Presbyterian government in the Church of England. Charles tried to play off the Scots against the English and the various English factions against one another. This pamphlet is an example of the explosion of opinions that were voiced at that time.
