Brewster, David, Sir (1781-1868) Scottish physicist; invented kaleidoscope. Autograph Letter Signed ("D Brewster"), Allerly, Wednesday (c. September 1832), 1 pg., 13 x 8 in. To Thomas Scott: "I enclose a draft for £7 on the belief that the Balance of £1-14-6 is the last sum due by you to me for Turnips &c. I do not understand how you have been late to pay Land Tax for me…." Boldly penned and signed; short fold separation along lower margin affects nothing. Only three Brewster letters have appeared at major auctions in the last 25 years. Scarce.

(German Philosophy) von Humboldt, Cousin, Ulrici, Tholuck, Ewald, et al. A collection of 12 letters, in German and French, addressed to E.F. Young in Newton, Massachusetts between 1853-69, discussing German philosophy and regarding a translation of Johann Erdmann's book on German philosopy, to be directed toward the English-speaking public. Included are two 1855 Autograph Letters Signed with good content by Alexander von Humboldt, the famous naturalist and explorer, who asserts that "Intellectual freedom is harder to achieve than political freedom"; a transcription of a third 1855 letter is included (original not present). Also, Two Autograph Letters Signed by Victor Cousin, the French philosopher whose Eclecticism influenced the Transcendentalists for a time; he mentions Hegel, Reid, Dugald Steward, Sir William Hamilton, and Royer-Collard, and wonders how German philosophy could have gone from the heights of Kant to the depths of Bruno Bauer. He asks Young to translate a work of Jacobi's, which "simulataneously carries souls to virtue and to God." An Autograph Letter Signed by Hermann Ulrici discusses Erdmann's book and includes some thoughts on philosophy and theology. There are three Autograph Letters Signed by German theologian, Heinrich G.A. Ewald, and three letters from F.A.G. Tholuck, one of them with some detailed theological content. Also included is a letter from Karl Rosenbaum to Young, enclosing a copy of a famous letter written in 1798 by John Richardson to Kant (the only translated items), asking for a clarification; a manuscript copy of Erdmann's autobiography; and a few incidental papers. Items are Very Good to Fine.

Lister, Joseph (1827-1912) English surgeon; founder of antiseptic surgery. Autograph Letter Signed, London, Oct. 30, 1890, 1 page, 6 x 4 in. To W.P. Fox, Esq., regarding an apparently reluctant patient: "It would certainly be more satisfactory to see the patient along with you; & if Miss Smith should call upon me again, I will tell her so." Light wrinkling, else Very Good. In addition to his development of antiseptic surgery, Lister contributed many other surgical techniques and instruments to medical science. He was the first physician elevated to the British peerage (as Baron Lister of Lyme Regis).

Stroud, Robert (1890-1963) American ornithologist; "Bird-Man of Alcatraz." Imprisoned for murder from 1909, Stroud became an authority on canaries and the diseases of birds; he published Stroud's Digest of the Diseases of Birds in 1942. Autograph Letter Signed ("Bob, Robert Stroud - 594"), on lined paper from Alcatraz Prison (where he spent 1942-59), May 15, 1944, 1¼ pp, quarto. Written to his sister Marnie in Metropolis, Illinois, with news about his book. In part: "…I got the new brochure today and it is swell. Mark says he has sent 500 to Canada….There are ten or twelve persons who have recommended the book, and three of them are scientists. One from Carnegie Institute, one from Vanderbilt U and one from Storr's Experimental Station….There is also a nice letter from the president of one of the large bird associations….I think everything is going to work out fine…." An amazingly upbeat letter from a man who would never get out of prison.
