Great Britain. Sovereign, 1917. George V. S-3996; Fr-404b; KM-820. A major rarity among sovereigns! England was going off the gold standard at this point in World War One, and most of the sovereigns of this, the final year from London, were melted before they ever left the mint. This is, bar none, the very top piece we ever located. Extremely rare! Spink places a valuation of 3,500 Pounds ($5,600) on the 1917 sovereign in EF grade, but does not attempt to price it in Unc., because of its great rarity in this condition. The finest known? PCGS graded MS-63.

Great Britain. Sovereign, 1923-SA. George V. Pretoria mint. S-4004; Fr-5; KM-21. Only two SA sovereigns are important rarities, and Dr. Terner managed to obtain both of them, each definitely among the finest known. The reported mintage for this date was just 64 pieces, with possibly as few as 4 known in Uncirculated. This magnificent Gem has a marvelous history, having come privately from the family of Pretoria's chief coiner in 1923, who saved a few examples (four) of what he correctly perceived would one day be recognized as a first-class English gold rarity. Purchased in 1994. PCGS graded MS-65.

Priced as even rarer than the 1923-SA above, in the Spink standard catalogue, which gives a value of 2,250 Pounds ($3,600) in EF grade but does not price it in Uncirculated. This is a gorgeous, satiny specimen, likely the finest known 24-SA. Purchased in 1993, mentioned because that led to our being offered the 23-SA the following year. PCGS graded MS-65.
