Flowing Hair Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1628
1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. VG-8. Nice and original, but marred by a natural lamination flaw on the lower left obverse and some unnatural scratches in the same area and a cut on the reverse by the final S of STATES.
Estimated Value $550 - 650.

Lot 1629
1805 Draped Bust Half Dollar. EF-40. Antique grey and olive toning on both sides. Decent strike, the only weakness appearing at the tip of the bust and on the opposite side of the coin in the clouds. A perfect representation of the date and grade.

Lot 1630
1805 Draped Bust Half Dollar. 5 over 4. AU-55. Beautiful silver-gray, lilac, and steel-blue toning over lustrous surfaces. Small amounts of dirt surround some of the stars and outer legends, begging the question "Should this coin be conserved?" It's really a lovely piece as it sits, but one wonders if there might be some underlying luster ready to be revealed. We'll leave it to the next owner to answer that question.
Estimated Value $3,100 - 3,300.

Lot 1632
1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. Pointed 6, stem not through claw. NGC graded MS-64. This remarkable coin has some of the prettiest toning you'll ever see on a Draped Bust Half Dollar, or any early American type, for that matter. Plus, the toning is equally impressive on both sides, not just one. Boldly struck from worn dies, such that the centers are sharp but the details weaken at the peripheries, with some of the stars and letters deforming and stretching into the denticles. This late state also shows the die crack at star 12, labeled R-5 (Rare) by Overton. This may, in fact, be the finest example known of the sub-variety -- if not, we're sure it's the loveliest! For the entire date, NGC has graded only 18 at this level, 3 in MS-65, and only 1 in MS-66.
Estimated Value $22,000 - 25,000.

1811 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Golden toned at the centers, surrounded at the borders by steel-blue colors. Completely original, with deep, creamy luster and unbroken color on the high points. NGC reports 11 at this level, 7 in MS-66, and 3 in MS-67. A fabulous piece for the collector who loves nice toning.

Lot 1634
1811 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Small 8. NGC graded MS-63. Lots of frosty luster rests beneath a layer of mottled charcoal-silver toning. Struck from dies that were slightly out-of-parallel, resulting in weakness on Liberty's cap and the base of the reverse. Completely original and, in our opinion, conservatively graded. According to the consignor, this is the second finest example known of the variety.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

Lot 1635
1814 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. A magnificent, virtually unimprovable example of this date. Struck from heavily clashed dies (this eventually led to a refinishing of the dies and the O-105a variety). Beautiful, silver gray and rose toning in that wonderful format where the underlying luster seems to stretch from the tops of the lettering and devices. Very nicely struck and super clean. NGC has graded 4 1814 Half Dollars (of several different varieties) at this level, with only 3 finer.
Estimated Value $8,200 - 9,000.

1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Bold cartwheels dance around both sides when this frosty Gem is rotated under a light source. The immaculate surfaces are toned in a pale, silver-lilac color, with hints of steely iridescence at the peripheries. Great strike, great eye appeal, great everything. NGC reports 3 in this grade, and only 1 finer.

1819 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 9 over 8. Large 9. MS-64. Soft even luster, subdued somewhat by a layer of silver-gray toning, enhanced by some burnt-gold and golden-lilac peripheral toning. Minor color changes on the high points of the obverse; the reverse is immaculate and the color is completely even.

Lot 1638
1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 2 over 1. NGC graded MS-66. A phenomenal coin in all areas -- strike, surface quality, luster, and eye appeal. Let's start with the first aspect -- strike. Every fine detail in Liberty's hair is crisply defined, as are all of the eagle's feathers and the lines in the shields. The only weak spot on this coin is the first through the third stars, and even they are not bad. Surface quality is impressive -- the wide open fields are unbroken by marks and Liberty's vulnerable cheek is unharmed. The luster?…nice, soft and even…stretching from rim to rim. Finally, the best part of this coin, the eye appeal, brought to new heights by a silky blend of silver-gold pastels surrounded by sea-green and steel-blue iridescence. Whether you're a date, type, or variety collector, this coin is sure to please. Tied with one other coin for the lofty title of finest NGC graded 1822/1 Half Dollar.

Lot 1641
1828 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Square base 2, small 8's, large letters. NGC graded MS-64. PQ. Beautiful toning consisting of rose, olive, and blue pastels. The reverse is fully Prooflike -- even the stripes of the shield are polished and brilliant. The obverse is not nearly as brilliant and has more of a satiny appearance. We suspect that at least one time in this coin's past, it was referred to as a "one-sided" Proof. Breen doesn't mention this variety specifically, but makes note that at least 6-8 of the Square Base 2, Small 8's, Large Letters Half Dollars are known as Proofs. He also lists a one-sided Proof of the Overton 105 variety. So, this coin is not without precedent. Whether it is worth a premium or not, we leave to you, the bidder.

1916-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. If you thought the other Gem toned 1916-D Half Dollar in this sale was pretty, wait until you see this jewel. The colors and the toning patterns are nearly identical, but this one is slightly smoother and silkier in appearance. The strike is exceptional and the surfaces are essentially flawless. 1916-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Deep, colorful toning on both sides, reminiscent of the "mint set" toning seen on later, government issued Mint Sets. 1916-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. MS-64. First year of issue for A.A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design. In 1916, the Denver mint was the most prolific of the three then operating.
