Lot 612
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. PCGS graded AU-50. Struck on a broad, full planchet with a complete complement of denticles encircling both sides. The strike is nice and even, from dies that were in perfect parallel alignment. Soft traces of luster can still be seen around many of the design elements, particularly on the reverse. The color is an original, light, silver-gray, with traces of golden-brown toning on the obverse. Any wear is light and appears as softening of the color on the high points. The only flaw worth mentioning is a small dig in the right obverse field, just in front of and below Liberty's chin (PCGS # 6853) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Lot 613
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded AU-55. A very pleasing and impressive example of the second year of American Silver Dollar production. Never cleaned, this piece features original, silver-gray colors with golden-brown toning surrounding most of the devices on the obverse. The reverse is a little softer in appearance, not as heavily toned around the devices and with a slightly brighter appearance. The only flaw worthy of note is a tiny rim ding at 5:30 on the reverse. A beautiful, well-balanced piece and a great coin for the type or date specialist.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 13,000.

1799 Draped Bust Dollar. PCGS graded EF-45. Bolender 9, R-1. Toned in rich, smoky-gray and steel-blue colors, with plenty of original luster and well-struck details beneath the toning. This variety is easily recognized by the dies flaws in the obverse field coming down from the I of LIBERTY and the "apostrophe" after the last S of STATES. The original appearance of this piece should add to its value (PCGS # 6878) .

1799 Draped Bust Dollar. Sharpness of Very Fine. Counterstamped "C. POLK" on the obverse and holed at 12:00 for suspension. Apart from these minor inconveniences, the coin is very attractive because of the original, mottled charcoal and silver-gray toning.

1800 Draped Bust Dollar. NGC graded AU-50. Choice for the grade and completely free of problems, including nicks, dings, scratches, and obvious marks. Lovely lilac-gray toning with ample traces of underlying luster. Early bust dollars in such pristine condition are a real prize nowadays. This is one of Bolender's "Close Date" varieties, this die easily identified buy the small die chip that appears as a raised dot just to the left of the highest hair curl. Similarly, the reverse has some die chipping by the final S of STATES.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Lot 621
1836 Gobrecht Dollar. SEGS graded MS-61. Although in a SEGS holder and marked "Name Below Base" this is clearly a mistake as the designer's name is at the base of the device rather than in the exergue. One of the 1,000 struck for circulation as the new style for all silver coinage. A well struck example with no serious marks worthy of note, the rims are nice and clean. The obverse is a medium bluish-grey while the reverse exhibits speckled hues of grey. Always in demand for the type set

The obverse soon was modified to add stars, removing them from the reverse, and the eagle tired of flying so it was depicted perched on an unseen rock holding the olive branch of peace in its right claw, and the readiness of arrows for war in its left claw. This important pattern issue is far more graceful than the design as modified, the medallic appearance of Liberty alone with a small date beneath gives her a regal appearance, while the flying eagle possesses a majesty not seen when depicted sitting on a rock, or loaded down with branches and weaponry.
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,500.

1854 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65. An impressive example of this scarce date Dollar, one of an estimated 50 Proofs struck for the year. At the Proof-65 level, this piece stands alone as the single finest example graded by PCGS, making it one of the top three examples known of the date (this coin, an NGC Proof-65, and Phil Kaufman's NGC Proof-66). This one has been atop the PCGS chart for several years, as evidenced by the older style, green label. This makes it a good candidate for a Cameo designation, as both sides appear to have enough frosting to "make the grade." Toned in golden-brown iridescence on the obverse. The reverse is pure white and dazzling. A great coin for advanced collector of this challenging series (PCGS # 6997) .
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.

1855 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. One of an estimated 50 Proofs struck of this date. Nicely toned in lilac-gray, with scattered flecks of burnt-gold color and highlights of golden iridiescence for added attraction. Housed in an old style, green label PCGS holder. PCGS reports 7 in this grade with 2 higher. Mintages for Proof coins prior to 1858 are very low because the general public had no idea that such coins were even available -- only a small coterie of well-connected dealers and collectors were aware that they could apply to the Mint and, for a small premium over the face value of the coins, obtain Proof versions. Eventually, the Mint caught on and realized that they had a real potential for profits in their Proof Coin Department, a potential realized when they "went public" in 1858 (PCGS # 6998) .
Estimated Value $17,000 - 20,000.

1857 Liberty Seated Dollar. Population of only 1 with 3 higher, all Proof 66 Cameo. NGC graded Proof 64 Cameo. A stunning choice brilliant proof specimen. Probably among those struck in January when the dies were fresh, as this example is boldly defined throughout. The mirror fields are watery with the raised portions frosty giving this beauty its Cameo designation. The few faint hairlines and imperfections present where probably there during striking; the delicate light golden toning further adds to its appeal.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

Lot 626
1861 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66. Perfectly toned in a wondrous blend of blue and lilac colors, with some mottling near the centers that remind us of a clear, star-filled summer night. This is the only Proof-66 graded by PCGS. They've graded one finer at the PR-67 level, but it would take a lot of convincing to make us believe that any coin could be as visually attractive as this piece. Housed in an old style, green label PCGS holder, offering the tantalizing possibility of an upgrade. A definite treat for the connoisseur of toned coins. Front cover coin (PCGS # 7004) .

1870-CC Liberty Seated Dollar. MS-60. Obverse 2, Reverse 5. A trifle soft on the head and the upper right stars. 1880 Trade Dollar. SEGS graded Proof 63. A glittering, totally white brilliant proof specimen with far fewer hairlines than one might expect for this numerical grade. Definately, a choice example of this proof-only year.

Lot 635
1881 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Ultra Cameo. A dazzling example of this rare, Proof-only date, here in a nearly pure white version. Impeccable surfaces and wonderful eye appeal. NGC reports only 1 example in this grade and only 1 finer. Thus, the chances of upgrading this piece are extremely low and the cost would be extremely high in relation. "Ultra" refers to the extreme contrast between the devices and the fields, but it really means "ultimate" in terms of rarity and desirability. Ultra Cameos were the first coins struck from fresh dies. As more and more coins were struck, the frosting wore off by the polishing effect of the metal of the planchets squeezing against the metal of the dies. If enough coins were struck, the dies would eventually become completely brilliant, or nearly so. Thus, Ultra Cameo Proofs, by their very nature, are extremely rare.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,500.

Lot 636
1882 Trade Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65 Deep Cameo. A rare, Proof-only date with an entire mintage consisting of a mere 1,097 coins. This is one of the finest survivors -- PCGS reports 3 in this grade and only 1 finer. This example is pure white, without a trace of color on either side, allowing the full effect of the cameo contrast to be viewed and enjoyed. The surfaces are completely mark-free. Powerful eye appeal for the power collector. No circulation strikes were made of the 1879-1883 Trade Dollars because the Trade Dollar was supplanted by the Morgan Dollar beginning in 1878. Nevertheless, Proofs of those years were included in annual Proof Sets, or offered for sale individually. The 1884 may have been a legitimate Proof date (die books of the period indicate that dies were made for 1884 Trade Dollars); the 1885 is believed to be a clandestine (but highly desired) issue.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.
