Lot 1568
1849-D Open Wreath. AU-58. Here is a really nice coin for the grade, with much of the original luster retained and even the central reverse devices well struck. Minor hairlines from circulation is the only complaint, as seen on virtually every circulated gold coin. Scarce this nice.

Lot 1569
1849-O Open Wreath. AU-58. Lustrous and well struck on the obverse; however, the reverse is weak on the date, with the last two digits barely visible. Strong mintmark. Production of the tiny coins seems to have been a challenge for the various branch mints, many display weak areas, particularly the central reverse, which is opposite the head of Liberty. As these tiny coins were struck, there was only so much metal to move around to fill the details in the dies. Liberty's curls are usually well struck, but the reverse is often weak on many of these branch-mint Gold Dollars.

1851-D. AU-55. A scarce date in high grade; however, there are two microscopic marks, one in the field just before Liberty's forhead, another hidden one on the B of LIBERTY.   1852-C. EF-40. Smooth, even wear on Liberty's curls, the reverse with wear on the wreath. One small weak area is noted on the reverse, on the second L of DOLLAR, otherwise the coin is well struck. Low mintage date with 9,434 issued.

Lot 1581
1852-D. EF-40. Choice original orange-gold color atop lustrous fields. A glass will locate some trivial scrapes, one in the field before Liberty's crown, another below her bust. Tough to find in high grades, with a scant 6,360 minted, leaving few for date collectors to choose from. As with most of these scarce dates, they were carefully selected by a collector who demanded quality.

Lot 1585
1853-D. NGC graded MS-61. Prooflike in the fields and boldly struck for this Mint. The surfaces show a few marks, accounting for the grade, but they are microscopic and unimportant. A low 6,583 were struck, few of which survive today, with perhaps a dozen known in the various gradations of Mint State. Few can even be called choice. Ever popular for the Dahlonega mintmark, this scarce coin is sure to please any demanding collector. One notes a minor scrape in the obverse field before Liberty's face, and light hairlines in the delicate fields. Well preserved and eye-appealing.

1853-D. Sharpness of VF-20 but cleaned and repaired. There is a shallow "X" scratched on Liberty, with design elements a bit abraided. Scarce as a date and mint. The surfaces appear to have been burnished, leaving the devices mushy in appearance.

1854-D. AU-55. Boldly struck throughout, with full devices and none of the usual weakness. There are some faint obverse scratches, and a couple on the reverse. A rare date, with only 2,935 run off in all, most of which were lost. Lustrous fields and one that most collectors can appreciate. The obverse die is sharply clashed with the reverse. Struck from a rotated reverse die, approximately 180 degrees.

First year of issue 1854-S Gold Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. A frosty near-gem from the first year of issue of the fledgling San Francisco Mint. Delightfully well struck with full curls on Liberty's tiny head; and similar completeness on the reverse wreath leaves. Struck from lightly clashed dies on the reverse. NGC has graded 6 this high, with only 2 graded higher. A beautiful coin in every way; and certain to please the discriminating buyer.

1854 Type 2. PCGS graded MS-64. The lovely Indian Princess design. Nice obverse, with an unusually sharp strike on the Indian but some weak areas in the legend. Reverse isn't quite so blessed: it has a lot of planchet roughness, although … although it is deeply struck, its center impressively so. All in all, a pretty nice coin. Oldtime gold color, too.

Lot 1593
1854 Type 2. ICG graded MS-62. Subdued frosty surfaces and well struck. The date and central reverse devices are all complete. Struck from lightly clashed dies, as are most of this tiny issue. Long respected as one of the most difficult type coins to locate in Mint State, very few of which were preserved in any Mint State grade, and the type was quickly changed in just a few years. At the time of issue, a dollar was a lot of money to "save" or otherwise not spend, thus most were spent and circulated into lower grades. An important opportunity.

1854 Type 2. Sharpness of AU-50 but possibly worn as jewelry. Frosty and lustrous on both sides, with two tiny disturbances on the rim making us wonder if this coin might have been worn as jewelry for a brief time (the surfaces do not have the pebbly appearance of most jewelry worn coins). Scarce and in demand by type collectors.

1855-C Type 2. Sharpness of VG-7 but worn as jewelry. The design elements show more wear on the obverse, while the reverse is sharp and appears to be a grade better. The rims have some evidence of mounting or other form of being held in a jewelry bezel. A scarce, low mintage date, with few coins to satisfy date collector demand. One that should be inspected.

1855-D Type 2. Sharpness of VF-20 but repaired and polished. One of the really difficult dates to locate in any grade, this 1855-D is all too typical of what most collectors are able to obtain. The surfaces show moderate circulation marks, which have been polished down a bit. Nevertheless, with a total issue of 1,811 very few of these are available to satisfy collector demand. The obverse has a few shallow marks, which have been reduced by the polishing.

1856-D. Sharpness of EF-40 but repaired. Here is one of the really rare dates in the One Dollar Gold series. Mintage topped out at 1,460 coins. As all too often seen, this one has its problems, there is an area of buffing in the left obverse field where some scratches have been removed. Obviously this important coin should be inspected by bidders prior to the sale, as any problems need to be evaluated before the sale. Lustrous and well struck overall.

The Finest Known 1857-C Gold Dollar in Mint State 62. NGC graded MS-62. This is quite likely the Finest Known of the date, as neither grading service has seen a better one. The surfaces show only faint handling marks and radiate the glowing luster familiar to numismatists. Fully struck with worn and lapped dies that still show evidence of clash marks. On the reverse, the die was rotated about 15 degrees counterclockwise. With a low mintage of 13,280 struck, few remain for collectors in any grade, let alone in Mint State. A foremost rarity and worthy of the Finest collection.
