Lot 2590
Whistler, J.A. McNeil. Chelsea. An evocative river scene, showing good use of Whistler's delicate, impressionistic touch, 5¼" x 8" image on a 10" x 13¼" sheet. From a nineteenth century album of etchings, perhaps contemporary with the original art. Toning and light soiling in the wide borders, much of which would be covered by matting and framing; else good. Whistler was a first-rate etcher as well as painter. An affordable example of his art.
Estimated Value $50 - 100.

Lot 2591
Yasushi Tanaka (b. 1886) One of the great Japanese painters of the early 20th century, Tanaka's work reflects a Western Cosmopolitan influence. After settling in Paris in 1920, Tanaka had several highly successful exhibitions and established friendships with Hemingway, Pound and other notables of the day. His work was re discovered in Japan in the 1980s and remains popular.

Lot of two Signed Photographs of Tanaka's paintings ("Yasushi Tanaka") -- one is dated "Paris 1929", one unsigned postcard of Nude with a Screen and two exhibition booklets, one from a January 1924 exhibit at the Galerie de Marsan and the other from a May 1928 exhibit at the Galerie Druet. Tanaka has signed both photographs in black ink in a fairly dark area of the print, so the signatures are not bold. The signed photograph of Nude with a Screen has silvered somewhat but the image is clear, except for minor edge toning, and the other pieces are in very good to fine condition.

A choice lot -- the signed photographs are rare and in good condition and the exhibition catalogs remind us of the quality of Tanaka's work and the positive reaction of French audiences. The Marsan booklet is particularly nice, featuring pictures of several of Tanaka's lush nudes in a small quarto format.
Estimated Value $125 - 150.
