Lot 1163		1864 Presidential Election. Six items related to Abraham Lincoln and George McClellan. Four items are framed together: a memorial carte de visite of Lincoln (back stamp not visible), a CDV of George McClellan by D. Murphy, N.Y., a Lincoln/Johnson "National Union Nomination" ticket from California, and a McClellan/Pendleton "Democratic Ticket"; frame size is 15¾" x 10¼". Also, two "National Union Ticket"s, from California's first and second districts: the first is 7" x 3½", with a vignette of an American flag on the front and a red vignette of Lady Liberty and "The Union Forever!" on the verso; the second is 5" x 3", with a vignette of a rooster on the front and a red "Union" on the verso. Lot 1164		1865. A collection of fourteen cartes de visite, six of Lincoln, two of Mary Todd Lincoln (one by Brady, one by Woodward & Rundel), two of Andrew Johnson (one painted from life by Dodge, the other by Crater's), a very young soldier in uniform (by Brady), a caricature of a captured Jefferson Davis, dressed as a woman, between two Union soldiers (1865, by J.A. Arthur); a seated, dapper young man (by John Goldin & Co.), and Gen. Tom Thumb with his wife and child (damaged). Among the Lincoln CDvs is a framed gem photo (no backprint visible); Lincoln and his cabinet (no backprint visible), both framed; one by Salisbury, Bro. & Co.; a damp-stained image (by Berger, from Brady's Gallery) which was "Sold by a one-armed soldier" for 25¢; a full-length image from a print, by Holyland; and a caricature of Lincoln playing the banjo and singing, "I Wish I Was In Dixie." Lot 1165		1865 (1) Invitation to the Inaugural Ball for Lincoln and Johnson, uningrossed, March 4, 1865, 10" x 7". A couple of small edge tears and light toning. Attractively matted and framed to 16" x 13". (2) Stationery with portraits of "The Presidents of Our Great Republic," from George Washington through Abraham Lincoln. Sold by Lange & Kronfeld, N.Y. Very attractive. (3) Print of Washington and Lincoln, with Lady Liberty between them and vignettes of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War around them, by Himmel & Forster, 17½" x 22½", framed to 19" x 24". Light staining in upper margin. (4) Bust-length print of Stephen A. Douglas, 15" x 11½", housed in a period frame, 18¾" x 15½". Lot 1166		Political Cartoons. Lot of six cartoons, each attractively framed to 13¼" x 10¾". They include: (1) a caricature of Lincoln, leaning over the side of the "Ship of State" and dangling Secretary of the Treasury Chase and Secretary of War Stanton by the back of their coats; the title is "Universal Advice To Abraham. Drop'em!" (2) Lincoln performing a high-wire act as he carries a slave on his shoulders and balances with the Constitution (3) A conversation between a "Confederate Liberator" and a "Devoted Secesh," headed "My Maryland!!!" (4) A slave named Pompey, who is about to be freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, giving notice to his master on December 26 (1862) (5) John Bull (with a bull's face and a £ symbol in one eye), showing his partialty for the Confederates (6) Lincoln trying to unknot thread which has unraveled from a ball of yarn called "UNION." Lot 1167		A miscellaneous lot of 20 Lincoln related medals in shapes and sizes. This group includes mostly later medals from the 20th Century. We note several large white metal or similar base metal pieces, a few from the Medallic Art Company of New York, others of much smaller size, a few may be silver, others lead or brass. One of the more interesting medals is dated 1887 for the Reunion of Confederate Veterans in Macon, Georgia, this medal is holed for suspension, and features a portrait of Jefferson Davis on the obverse. Some nicks to hard covers; light toning throughout. "Soldiers' and Patriots' Biographical Album," Chicago: Union Veteran Publishing Company, 1892, 833 pages, quarto. Frontispiece of Lincoln, with full-page plates of Grant, Sheridan, Logan, Sherman, George H. Thomas, Winfield Scott Hancock, Meade, McClellan, and others. Four pages disbound; a few others loose, and some dampstaining to front end pages. Toned throughout and worn, not affecting legibility. "Abe Lincoln's Yarns And Stories," by Colonel Alexander K. Lot 1171		1863 (1) Print with text of Emancipation Proclamation, surrounded by color vignettes of President Lincoln lifting up a slave from his broken chains, and small bust portraits of Grant and Seward, 24" x 28¾". On cardstock, 1890, by J.S. Smith & Co. Stain at lower border and one faint, barely-visible stain in print; 3" tear at left edge and 1¾" closed tear at lower edge; most blemishes would be covered by matting and framing. Bright and colorful. (2) A 15" x 22" Thomas Nast cartoon which appeared on November 2, a week before the presidential election of November 8, showing Columbia (guarded by the American Eagle), soldiers, and citizens, voting for Lincoln's reelection; a disparaging vignette of a Democratic voter is at lower right. Beneath an American flag is a slate of candidates for the Third District, with Lincoln and Johnson heading the ticket as President and Vice President. California pioneer and 1892 Prohibition candidate for President, John Bidwell, is listed as the congressional candidate! At the lower edge is a list of the counties which make up the Third District, including Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Sutter, etc. The reverse has an allegorical, patriotic vignette of Lady Liberty with ("The Union Forever!") imprinted in orange. Lot 1174		Lincoln / Johnson Campaign Ribbon, California, 1864. A 6-3/4" x 3" paper ballot inscribed "We Will Defend It Forever! National Union Ticket." Beneath a vignette of an American flag and a cannon is a slate of candidates for California's Second District, with Lincoln and Johnson heading the ticket as President and Vice President. Five electors are listed, as well as the name of William Higby for Congress. At the lower edge is a list of the counties which make up the Second District, including Tuolumne, Calaveras, Sacramento, Placer, etc. The reverse has an allegorical, patriotic vignette of Lady Liberty with ("The Union Forever!") imprinted in orange. Lot 1176		1860. Political photo medal of Stephen A. Douglas, reverse with Herschel V. Johnson but is missing the reverse photo. The photo of Douglas is clear and well preserved, while the reverse photo is missing and shows traces of rust. Lot 1177		1864. Election medal of Lincoln and Johnson, 32 mm. The obverse shows a handsome portrait of Lincoln (by W. H. Key), surrounded by LINCOLN & JOHNSON UNION CANDIDATES with 1864 below. The reverse has a small head of Washington at the center, with stars and rays behind, and the legend FREEDOM TO ALL MEN/ UNION. Struck in white medal, and holed for suspension. Very Fine. Lot 1178		1864. Small 27.7 mm white medal of Lincoln by Keys. This medal is signed by W. H. Key, and shows a medallic portrait of Lincoln facing left, with ABRAHAM LINCOLN PREST. OF THE U.S. and the date 1864 below, the reverse with a small bust of Washington supported by a lumpy cloud, 4 flags on poles, glory rays and stars, and the motto THE UNION MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED. Lot 1179		c. 1864. Small brass medal which states Abraham Lincoln for President, with his portrait. The reverse shows an eagle perched on a drum, muskets, 8 flags, canon balls, and glory rays at the top. Holed for suspension. An impressive medal for the collector. Fine. Estimated Value $50 - 75. Lot 1180		1860 but struck later. Youthful portrait of Hon. Abraham Lincoln, reverse the famous "rail splitter" scene. Lincoln takes careful aim with his large sledge hammer as his assistant looks up hopefully while holding the splitter, with a small log cabin in the background across the open field. The scene is surrounded by the motto THE RAIL SPLITTER OF THE WEST. This appears to be a brass medal which has been lightly silvered. Probably struck around 50 to 100 years ago, dies by Ellis. Lot 1181		Lincoln Centennial medals, a group of 8 pieces. #The first medal in this group is bronze and was struck by the Whitehead & Hoag Company, Newark, NJ; 2) is a large white medal piece with a huge portrait of A. Lincoln on the obverse, the reverse with the presidential seal, and struck in Italy; 3) is a larger bronze medal of Lincoln, struck to commemorate the 100th year since his birth and the Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, August 1909; 4) is a brass medal with a blue ribbon for suspension, obverse of Lincoln and reverse commemorates the Civil War; 5) is a lovely pin from August, 1909 and made for the Salt Lake City convention of the 43rd Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, the ribbon is yellow, and there is a small medal with a flower at the center, and a bronze star below dated 1886 for the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic; 6: a large gilt bronze medal of Lincoln noting 1809 to 1909; 7) a bronze medal of Lincoln designed by Bela Lyon Pratt (who designed the Indian head quarter eagles and half eagles of 1908-1929) the obverse with Lincoln's portrait and Centennial and Lincoln's name, and the date MCMIX, the reverse with his famous quote "Government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth, this medal is in what is likely the original black holder and the medal is suspended on a red, white and blue ribbon. Despite a few spots, the medal is very appealing and last 8) another example but slightly smaller of the Pratt medal described in 7) above, also with a suspension ribbon. Lot 1183		Lincoln Pinbacks, Political Buttons, and Ribbons. A collection of twenty-nine items, including nineteen pinbacks of various sizes and dates, four ribbons, four ribbons with medallions or pinbacks, and three items unrelated to Lincoln. Two black-and-white ribbons commemorate the centennial of Lincoln's birth (1809-1909); another black-and-white ribbon is for "Citizens' Commitee. Lincoln Reception. Philadelphia, February, 1861," and the fourth is printed "Loyal League of Union Citizens. Organized March 6, 1863…."and has a red, white, and blue rosette at top (bottom is stained). The four ribbons with medals are G.A.R., two from Pa. Also included is a 1912 Republican National Convention badge with ribbon; a gem portrait of Gen. Lot 1184		Abraham Lincoln Presidental Candidate Badge, 1860. A significant memento of United States political and social history, with a choice young and unbearded portrait of the future "Emancipator" as a bonus! Comprised of a gilt brass frame, pressed together to form a hollow pendant, and pierced to be hung from a ribbon and loop. Each side with sharp tintype portraits of the candidates. Side A: "ABRAHAM LINCOLN," 1860, below, with flanking laurel sprays. Side B: similar, but Vice-Presidential nominee, "HANNIBAL HAMLIN, with his distinguished looking portrait. Intact, and Very Fine, with residual gilding remaining. Hamlin's portrait choice, Lincoln's with usual tintype craquelure, some running through his forehead and one cheek, but his eyes, mouth, and expression remain sharp and clear. Diameter: 25 mm. They include: (1) a brass, seated Lincoln, 7" x 4¾" x 4½", weighing 5½ lbs., by D.C. French (2) a brass, standing Lincoln, 6¼" x 2½", wearing a top hat, with book under his arm, facsimile signature on base, by L.A. Fleck 1957 (3) brass bust on a pedestal, 5½" x 2", 1897, ACME Clurg & Ol (4) bas-relief bust, 6¼"x 3½" on 10" x 6¼" mount, both reddish-brown (5) 8" brass letter opener with bust of Lincoln (6) 4" replica of Lincoln's tomb in Springfield, IL; and (7) brass, bas-relief head on 5" x 4¼" medallion with "The Republican Club of the City of New York February 12th 1910" stamped around lower edge. Lot 1186		(Lincoln, Abraham). April 15, 1865 copy of The New York Times, with black, mourning borders and a front-page headline, "AWFUL EVENT. President Lincoln Shot by an Assassin." The story takes up 2+ columns. It gives the known details of the attack and also reports on the attempted assassination of Secretary of State Seward; the last paragraph begins, "The President is reported dead." Lot 1187		(Lincoln, Abraham). Six items in two frames, related to Lincoln's assassination. One frame holds a carte de visite of John Wilkes Booth, identifying him on the mount as "The murderer of Abraham Lincoln…," a newspaper article from April 27, 1865 announcing that Booth has been killed, and a memorial carte de visite with an image of Lincoln, "The Martyr President," on a tombstone, by J. Hall, New York. The second frame holds a mourning-bordered memorial envelope with Lincoln's portrait, a tombstone-shaped memorial piece, and a poem about Lincoln with a vignette at top featuring his image, published by Charles Magnus. Lot 1188		Theater Bill For The Majestic Theater, Philipsburg, Pa. 11½" x 5" theater bill featuring a 4" x 3¼" image of Lincorln, for the November 21, n.y. showing of "That Great History Picture! Orange ticket, used, for entrance to the U.S. Senate for the "Impeachment of the President," April 16, 1868, matted and framed with the printed part of an invitation from President and Mrs. Johnson for Mr. and Mrs. Robinson to dine with them on March 14, 1868; also included is an octavo engraving of Andrew Johnson and a 2¾" x 4¾" piece of stationery with an embossed "J". Lot 1191		Presidential Memorial Plate, "Our Martyrs." United States, c. 1901. Colorful memorial plate initiated by the assassination of President William McKinley in September of 1901. Central circular medallion with portraits of Lincoln and Garfield over that of McKinley, with flanking flags, and on a leaf green ground. Each portrait with inscribed name, while towards the base of the medallion, "Our Martyrs." Plate edged in a border resembling a vibrant viridian green. Plate in choice condition, with usual light craquelure, one tiny nick to the rim, and a 1/4" flake (well away from the colored areas) expertly filled. Diameter: 10-1/8". Estimated Value $250 - 350. Lot 1192		Unusual Liquor Bottle Sporting President McKinley's Portrait. United States, c. 1898-1902. A large, antique spirits bottle, with a "make your own label" feature -- likely for the "home distillery!" Where the label would reside, the bottle has large rectangular depression, along with a curved glass cover. Applied to the cover is a printed (or perhaps an albumin print) sepia-toned bust of McKinley, against Old Glory, of which the latter appears to be partly printed and partly hand painted. The glass label was then glued to the bottle. Bottle pristine, the label very fine plus, with a few spots of deterioration. Comes with a contemporary, but not belonging, aluminum cap/jigger. Height: 11". The bottle could either be celebrating the President as the victor in the Spanish-American War, or perhaps a memorial to him as a victim of assassination. Remarkable ephemera! Lot 1193		Memorabilia Relating to the 28th Presidency of the United States. U.S., c. 1912-1921. The first that of the 1912 Republican presidential candidate, William H.Taft, and vice-presidential running mate, J.S. Sherman. Their full color portraits in oval shields, flanked by U.S. flags and eagle, and framed by mauve roses, along with further floral frame, in gold, along plate's rim. This 8-1/4" plate, made by Sterling China Company of Sebring, Ohio, is nicely preserved. The second, a larger decorative or serving plate, with gold and pink-edged border. Within, portraits of all U.S presidents from Washington up to Wilson. Their likenesses in neat transfer prints in black or dark umber. Aside from some wear to outer edging of gold, plate in choice condition. Plate by Victoria, Austria. Width: 11-5/8". Lot of 2. Estimated Value $200 - 275. Lot 1194		Colorful Commemorative Metal Plate for the "Grand Old Party." United States, c. 1909. A delightfully elaborate work of high political art for its time. The plate celebrates the latest President-elects from the Republican Party to reach the White House -- William H.Taft, and his Vice-president, James S. Sherman, who were inaugurated on March 4th, 1909. The portraits of both are especially well rendered. Bordering them are ten smaller cameo portraits of past presidential aspirants and winners -- from Gen. John C. Fremont in 1853, through Honest Abe, Garfield, Blaine, and Teddy Roosevelt. Along with the decorative banners and bunting, the shields, the gold borders and arabesques, the flags and the view of the White House, all combine to make this a most complex and artful piece of propaganda. Plate has expected handling wear at edges, with a few diminutive spots of discreet touch up, otherwise, the preservation is exceptional and the art 99% complete. Width: 9-5/8". Lot 1195		1885. Large white medal of U. S. Grant 62.5 mm. This medal has a regal portrait of Grant on the obverse, with "Soldier, President, Citizen" and other statements and was engraved by Morgan, probably George T. Morgan from the Philadelphia Mint. The reverse shows Grant mounted on his horse with various Civil War battle elements behind him. Some handling marks, but still quite impressive. Very Fine. Estimated Value $150 - 250. Lot 1196		Edward VIII As Prince of Wales. Gray silk portrait of Edward, "H.R.H. Prince of Wales," as a staff officer during World War I, 12 x 20", designed by Fritz Kaeser and printed by Oberland Silk Mfg. Co. Ltd, Zurich. The crest and motto, "Ich Dien [I serve]" is at upper left. Edward ascended to the throne in January 1936 and abdicated in December to marry Wallis Simpson; he was thereafter created Duke of Windsor by George VI. Lot 1197		Antique, and Still Usable Reading Glasses. United States(?), early 19th century. The fold open frame appears to be in a silver alloy, rather than silver plate, with the only marking being a no. 16. The lenses are small ovals separated by a broad nose piece. The ear rests consist of ingenious sliding bars with looped ends, and are thus adjustable for ear comfort to a wide variety of heads, but still can be folded to a compact size. The looped ends for a cord or chain, to be hung from the neck, for ease of availability. Some insignificant chipping to edges of these fairly strong lenses; the frame very fine plus.
