Lot 1154
Large Lot of Hand Colored Photographic Post Cards. Continental, or Germany, c. 1900-1920. An interesting, and sometimes amusing collection of quality photographic cards, some Italian or French made, with bulk perhaps German, or certainly Dutch. Many with pretty ladies, or ladies of fashion. Others with "home and hearth"themes, separation from one's beloved, some with children, along with a few New Years {"Gelukkig Nieuwjaar"), and religious cards - including several quaintly amusing "St. Nick" (as a long bearded ancient Bishop) cards. The bulk of these with some color tinting in reds, greens, yellows, and occasionally blue. A few pieces are printed, rather than photos. A few are inscribed or are used postally, and these are all Dutch, around the time of World War I. Cards genrally fine or better, with some rounding or slight chipping of the corners. A wonderful group, and looking back they well convey the sad, yet sweet innocence that was lost after the War. Lot of over 100 pieces.
Estimated Value $250 - 350.

Lot 1155
A Handsome Group of Tobacco Advertising Cards. United States, c. 1880-1910. Lot includes finely chromolithograped standard size single cards, bifold cards (like opening French doors), one photographic card, and one "trick" miniature playing card. The bulk of the cards are assorted pretty ladies, or ladies of fashion, in various ethnicities, situations and costumes. These are from W. Duke & Sons, NY, "Honest Long Cut" -- all very decorous and proper (except for a miss Sweden, who shows a bit of leg). On the other hand, a number of the "Industries of the States" cards from G.W. Gail & Ax, Baltimore, are rather racy, if not downright saucy! These have female personifications of a number of states, in varying degrees of en déshabillé, holding the state's coat-of -arms. In addition to these, there are three singletons. The miniature playing card from Kinney Brothers, if back lit, one can see a female artist, in artistic attire. Another card from Gail & Ax is part of the series showing Civil War battles -- here, the rebel attack on the Federal camp at Shiloh (pencil markings on back of card). And finally, one more from Duke & Sons, the photographic card, has the Presidential contenders of Cleveland and Harrison (Election of 1888) satirically portrayed as a baseball catcher and batter. Cards average very fine, a number better; likewise, some less. Usual size: 4-1/4" x 2-1/2". Lot of 44 cards. As a bonus, included is a still sealed, trial size bottle of White Clover Cream, by L.A. Gould of Portland, Maine, for chapped hands, lips, etc. The quaint period label simple but attractive. The contents luxuriously pearlescent, and comparable in appearance to fancy hand lotions of today. The bottle pristine, with cork stopper, over which is wrapped a vellum seal/cap! Worth a look, there are things here which may move one to further pursue these fascinating collectibles.
Estimated Value $200 - 275.
