U.S. Gold $5 Liberty

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2018
$5 Liberty. 1839. PCGS graded AU-55. Lovely surfaces and color for this issue, with a full strike on all devices. Examination with a glass will note trivial handling ticks, mostly in the fields, but none are deep or detracting. Slightly matte in appearance from many decades in storage, but quite lustrous. Exceptional quality for the grade (PCGS # 8191) .
Estimated Value $800 - 900.
From the Benson collection and purchased from Ira S. Reed's auction of December 2, 1944 for $21.00.

Lot 2019
$5 Liberty. 1840-C. PCGS graded AU-58. A marvelous high grade example of this most difficult Charlotte mint issue. Lovely golden-orange in color, the strike is full and complete with surfaces that still retain considerable semi-reflective mint luster. PCGS reports but 2 in this grade with only 1 graded better (MS-62). (PCGS # 8196) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.

Lot 2020
$5 Liberty. 1841-C. NGC graded MS-61. One of the finest graded by NGC of this rare date, with just 4 seen this high and a single coin graded higher (that an MS-64). The surfaces show moderate handling marks primarily in the fields, as the lettering and devices tend to deflect contact marks. An extreme rarity in mint state, and always in demand from this Southern mint.
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.

$5 Liberty. 1843-C. PCGS graded MS-63. Reflective fields and very well preserved! This one must have been set aside on the day it was struck and somehow came down to us with ample mint color and appeal. Frosty luster and exceptional quality for this early Charlotte date. PCGS has graded 2 this high with 3 graded higher, all MS-64 above. An opportunity for the specialist (PCGS # 8214) .
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.

$5 Liberty. 1843-C. NGC graded AU-53. Nicely struck in orangish color gold with traces of mint luster still adhering about the devices. We note some scattered light handling marks commensurate for this numerical grade. All Charlotte gold is rare in high grade, this example is no exception. The NGC census shows 9 in this grade with 26 higher.
Estimated Value $3,200 - 3,600.

$5 Liberty. 1847. Sharpness of EF-40 but cleaned and lightly scratched. There are some unfortunate scratches at the date, and the fields and surfaces show hairlines from a heavier than usual cleaning. The 7 in the date is recut over a smaller 7.
Estimated Value $120 - 140.

$5 Liberty. 1849-C. PCGS graded EF-45. A scarce date in most grades, and this one is better than most. The surfaces show above average marks, but the color is a rich coppery gold, with a touch of milky haze on the obverse. A couple of minor areas of amateur spot removal on the lower reverse, with resulting pin scratches at the CA of AMERICA. We note a die crack on the reverse from the edge through the left upper tip of the serif of U in UNITED to the branch. Here's a coin that has been off the market for 57 years (PCGS # 8241) .
Estimated Value $900 - 1,000.

$5 Liberty. 1855-O. PCGS graded MS-60. In an older green insert holder and the surfaces are very lovely here. Reflective mirror fields that have the usual trivial handling marks from handling, but fully struck and pleasing. PCGS has graded only 1 coin as MS-60 (this one), and 2 others, both MS-61, keeping this particular rarity solidly in the middle of the Condition Census for the date (PCGS # 8264) .

$5 Liberty. 1860-S. NGC graded AU-55. Light golden yellow in color and an average strike. Lustrous and rare, as mintages really tailed off and very few were saved in high grades. In fact, NGC has only graded 3 as such, with 3 higher, all AU-58 above. None have been graded by that service as mint state currently. An opportunity for the advanced numismatist to knock out a very rare date.

$5 Liberty. 1870-S. PCGS graded AU-50. PCGS has graded only 8 this high, with 3 above as AU-53 and 6 tied for the best they've seen as AU-55. Further, this lovely coin is housed in one of their old green insert holders. Frosty luster and clean surfaces belie the slight circulation. A sharply struck, well preserved rarity for the numismatist to ponder (PCGS # 8321) .

Lot 2034
$5 Liberty. 1871. PCGS graded MS-60. A very rare date with a mintage of just 3,200 pieces, very few of which survive today. As Breen notes in his Encyclopedia, "prohibitively rare above EF", which is clearly shown in the PCGS Population Report. In point of fact, this is the only Mint State example of this date in any grade they've seen! NGC has graded two others, one in MS-60, another in MS-61. That's a total of 3 coins graded in mint state, certainly not many to go around if you are a date collector. The surfaces show the expected scattering of ticks, none of which are particularly detracting. Identifiable by a short lint mark extending into the field from Liberty's lower lip, and a thin scuff in the field below Liberty's chin between the first two stars. Prooflike fields on the obverse, and struck from the same dies as a proof, as the first 1 in the date shows recutting, which is also seen on the known proofs of this date (PCGS # 8322) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Lot 2045
$5 Liberty. 1890-CC. PCGS graded MS-64. As the local gold and silver fields began to play out in the Carson City area, mintages also fell at the Mint. The flood of gold and silver began to slow by 1890 and it was evident that the San Francisco Mint could handle the Nevada mine output demands safely. Hence, the mintage for this 1890 Carson City half eagle came in at 53,800. Most entered circulation as intended, and very few were saved in mint condition. Here is a very pleasant example of this date, with satiny gold luster throughout, and the devices are sharply struck except for the upper curls on Liberty's head and the eagle's neck feathers, which are slightly weak. Under normal handling conditions, these Carson City half eagles are found bagmarked and nicked. However, this particular coin is very well preserved and retains smooth, unblemished fields and surfaces. Rare thus, as PCGS has only graded 27 this high, with 2 coins graded higher of the date. An important offering for the CC specialist (PCGS # 8376) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.
