  Ancient Greece. Lot of Three Silver Fractionals, c. 550-300 BC. Nice lot. Best is Athens, c. 431-429 BC., Trihemiobol: Athena head right / Owl and olive leaf (Svor. 21:43). Also, Ionia, Phokaea, c. 525-500 BC., Trihemiobol: charming Archaic female head left / Quadripartite incuse (cf. Bod. pl. 3, no. 31). Psidia, Selge, Trihemiobol: Gorgoneion facing / Helmeted head of Athena right (off center), SGC 5473 var. Last, a drachm of Kalchedon, Bithynia, 390-365 BC: Bull left on grain ear / "Mill sail" incuse (BMC p. 124, 4-7). Phokaea metal lightly granular, rest slight to no porosity. All with pleasant toning. Lot of 4 coins. Coins average Very Fine, one or two better or less.

  Ancient Greece. Lot of Four Silver Fractionals, c. 520-317 BC. Nice fractionals. Earliest is, Ionia, Teos, c. 520-478 BC., Tetartemorion: Griffin head right / Quadripartite incuse (Rosen ACNAC 5, nos. 603, 604). Plus two hemiobols from the Rosen Collection: Ionia, Samos, c. 440-380 BC.: Bull forepart, three quarters left / Two confronted bull foreparts; and Mysia, Cyzicus, c. 480-400 BC.: Forepart of boar left / Roaring lionhead left (BMC p. 35, 120). Last, a drachm of Macedon, Philip III, 323-317 BC: Head of Herakles right, in lionskin / Zeus enthroned left, tripod at left, star beneath throne. Cyzicus metal lightly granular, rest slight to no porosity. All with pleasant toning. Coins average Very Fine, plus or minus.

  Ancient Greece. Lot of Seven AR Coins, Mostly Tetradrachms, c. 525 BC. - 50 AD. Nice varied lot. Items worth looking at. Included are two Tetradrachms of Alexander III, of Macedon, 336-323 BC., one of Babylon, the other Macedon: Head of Herakles right / Zeus enthroned left. Plus, Athens, after 393 BC.: of usual type (SNG Cop. 63). Also a Tetradrachm of perhaps Gotarzes II, 40-51 AD.: Bearded and diademed bust left / Tyche offering palm to King. Also a Stater of Aegina, c. 525-500 BC.: Sea turtle / "Union Jack" incuse (cf. SNG Delpierre 1512). Plus two AR Eighth-Shekels of Byblos: perhaps Azbaal and Ainel: Hoplites in galley left, hippocamp below / Lion attacking bull. And lastly, Hasmonean Judea, an AE 22 mm. of Mattathias Antigonus, 40-37 BC.: Double cornucopia / Ivy wreath (Hendin 481). Silvers of good metal. Aegina with banker's mark towards edge. Byblos AR's nice. Antigonus boldly struck on tight flan. Lot of 8 coins. Coins range from Fine up to About Extremely Fine.

  Ancient Greece. Lot of Seven AR Coins, Mostly Tetradrachms, c. 525-2 BC. A nice bargain lot. Included are: Athens, after 393 BC.: Athena head right / Owl (SNG Cop. 63); and a Tetradrachm of Alexander III, of Macedon, 336-323 BC., Amphipolis mint: Head of Herakles right / Zeus enthroned left. Also a Tetradrachm of Phraates IV, 38-2 BC.: Bearded and diademed bust left / Tyche offering palm to King (Shore 271 var.). Plus three Seleucid Tetradrachms: two of Antiochus I, 280-261 BC.: Diademed head right / Apollo seated left on omphalos (SNG Cop 56, 80); plus one of Antiochus III, 223-187 BC., and similar to previous. Finally, a Stater of Aegina, c. 500-480 BC.: Sea turtle / Skew pattern incuse (cf. SNG Delpierre 1519). All on generally good metal, with various tones -- the Athens darkly toned. Lot of 7 coins. Coins average Fine, the Athens Very Fine.

Earliest tetradrachm is of Philip II, of Macedon, 359-336 BC, Amphipolis mint: Head of Zeus right / Youth on horseback, amphora in field. Also Macedon, Under Roman Rule, after 168 BC.: Head of Artemis right / Club with wreath (SNG Cop. 1315). Plus a Drachm of Istrus, Moesia, 4th century BC.: Two facing heads, left inverted / Sea eagle and dolphin left (Pick 440 var.). And more tetradrachms, starting with Athens, c. 325-275 BC.: Helmeted head of Athena right / Owl (SNG Cop. 63); plus a "New Style" Tetradrachm, c. 124/123 BC.: Dioscuri symbol on reverse (SNG Cop 272 var.). Also, Syria, Antiochus VII, 138-129 BC.: King's diademed head right / Athena Nikephoros left, within wreath border (SMA 298). And last, also Syria, Philip Philadelphos, 93-83 BC.: King's diademed head right / Zeus Nikephoros seated left (SNG Cop. 425). Philip II handsomely toned on faintly granular metal; modest scratch on reverse field. Roman Macedon, nicely centered and toned. Istrus, toned, with light ancient scratch on hair of one head. Rest with assorted tones. Antiochus sharp and lustrous, with pleasing plump portrait. Lot of 7 pieces. Three coins grade Fine to Very Fine, the rest better; Antiochus Extremely fine.

Earliest tetradrachm is of Alexander III, of Macedon, 336-323 BC.: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin / Zeus enthroned left. Also Macedon, Under Roman Rule, after 168 BC.: Head of Artemis right / Club with wreath (SNG Cop. 1315). Plus a Drachm of Istrus, Moesia, 4th century BC.: Two facing heads, right inverted / Sea eagle and dolphin left (SNG Cop. 192). And more tetradrachms, starting with Athens, "New Style" Tetradrachm, c. 124/123 BC.: Dioscuri symbol on reverse (SNG Cop. 268). Also, Ionia, Ephesus, a Cistophoric Tetradrachm of 69 BC.: Cista Mystica / Snakes, and torch, cornucopiae, and thyrsus symbols (cf. SNG Cop. 334). And last, from Syria, Philip Philadelphos, 93-83 BC.: King's diademed head right / Zeus Nikephoros seated left (SNG Cop. 430). All well centered and lightly toned, but for Cistophoric, which has darker iridescent toning. Small bronze deposit at Philip's ear. Lot of 6 pieces. Attica Fine, the rest from Very Fine to about Extremely fine.

Earliest tetradrachm is of Alexander III, of Macedon, 336-323 BC., attractive style Babylon issue, struck c. 317-311 BC.: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin / Zeus enthroned left (cf. Price 3747): plus an Alexander-type drachm of Philip III (SNG Cop. 1088). Also Macedon, Under Roman Rule, after 168 BC.: Head of Artemis right / Club with wreath (SNG Cop. 1310). Plus a Drachm of Istrus, Moesia, 4th century BC.: Two facing heads, right inverted / Sea eagle and dolphin left, Δ(?) on reverse. And more tetradrachms, starting with Athens, c. 325-275 BC.: Helmeted head of Athena right / Owl (SNG Cop 63); plus a "New Style" Tetradrachm, c. 124/123 BC.: Dioscuri symbol on reverse (SNG Cop 270). Also, Mysia, Pergamon, a Cistophoric Tetradrachm of 1st century BC.: Cista Mystica / Snakes, KA above (BMC p. 125, 112). And last, from Egypt, Ptolemy XII, 80-58 BC., dated 73/72 BC.: Ptolemy I's diademed head right / Eagle left (SGC 7945). Coins with various tones. Istrus and Philip III with porosity. Roman Macedon with minute ancient scratches. Ptolemy toned, with patch of roughness on reverse. Lot of 8 pieces. Coins range from Fine to Very Fine, one a tad better.

Highlights include two bronzes from Syracuse, Sicily: c. 440-425 BC., AE Trias: Arethusa right, dolphins around / Cuttlefish (SGC 1184 var.); and AE 18, 357-344 BC., Female head left / Dolphin right, scallop below (SGC 1187). Also, with nice green patina, Thrace, Maroneia, AE 15: Horse right / Vine within square (BMC 65); plus Lesbos, Mytilene,440-400 BC., AE 9: Apollo head right / calf's head right (BMC 7); and, Caria, Stratonikeia, c. 50 BC., AE 15: Hekate head right / Pegasus left (BMC 28 var.). Also four Hellenistic city bronzes from Phoenica, including Aradus, Carne, and Sidon; plus other city bronzes from Asia Minor, along with three Seleucid AE's, two with Medusa and Eros obverses.
