Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 351
1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. Sharpness of Very Fine but holed and repaired. This one has been holed through the second and third stars, and these have been filed and reingraved. Cleaned and nicely retoned, and evenly worn despite the work done. Always in demand for the date and first year of issue.
Estimated Value $700 - 800.

Lot 352
1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. PCGS graded VF-35. Satiny and bright, with traces of luster in the protected areas and light gold in color. This first year of issue half dollar is very rare in all grades, and this coin is likely high in the condition census for the variety. On the reverse there is a faint die crack through the first T in STATES, but this is not the later die state where the crack spans the entire reverse, further the strike is sharp and normally the eagle is very weak due to die swelling on the eagle for later die states. Excellent hair details on Liberty, and this one shows very little actual wear. Close examination will note a few minor adjustment marks on the obverse rim, but the stars remain as sharp as any seen on these early half dollars. An exciting coin for the specialist or collector who demands a blue chip rarity. We note the PCGS holder calls this a 1794 silver dollar, and this should be reholdered.
Estimated Value $7,500-UP.
Possibly the coin from Gehring Prouty's collection, and a mid condition census example of this variety.

Lot 353
1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. Sharpness of VF-35 but holed and plugged, and harshly cleaned. There has been a hole filed through the E of LIBERTY and the entire surface of this coin has been reworked and retoned a dark blue gray. Good hair detail, and one for the album collector who doesn't mind a damaged example.

1802 Draped Bust Half Dollar. Sharpness of Very Fine but damaged. The surfaces of this coin are tragically porous from decades or centuries buried or in some other caustic environment. The details are strong, but the close examination with a glass will only leave one wondering what could have happened to this one. A filler for the date collector.

Lot 356
1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. Pointed 6, stem through claw. NGC graded EF-45. A later die state with the heavy horizontal die break spanning the reverse. Gorgeous dark gray toning with multicolored highlights, and reasonably well struck considering the late die state. The devices are lighter in color than the fields. A rare and sought-after variety and this ranks as one of the top four known.
Not only is this a scarce die variety, but it is a fairly late die state as well, with the large horizontal reverse die crack. The colors are truly a delight here, and worth a premium if you love gorgeously toned coins.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,400.

Lot 357
1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. Pointed 6, stem through claw. PCGS graded MS-61. Satiny gray in color with glowing luster in the protected areas. As with most 1806 half dollars, the strike is not abundantly sharp, but all the devices are reasonably well struck including the Liberty's upper hair and the eagle's head and stars above, which are present but a touch weak. Important as a type coin, as few draped bust half dollars are found in grades even approaching mint state. Further, this is likely one of the very finest known of the variety. Quickly identifiable by the doubled Y in LIBERTY and encircling die crack through the first few stars and date, and a reverse crack at the tops of STATE.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Lot 358
1807 Draped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Gem draped bust coinage is extremely rare. Only a handful of coins have been graded as such over the many years of third party grading, and prices are always strong when they are offered. As a date, NGC has graded 5 1807 Draped bust half dollars this high, with a single coin graded higher. Certainly not many to go around for all the collectors out there who desire to own a mint fresh example as offered here. Abundant luster in the fields and the coin is nicely struck save for the area around Liberty's temple, which is characteristically weak. Light golden hues with a touch of deeper blue at the rims. Certainly a rare opportunity for the advanced numismatist to secure a lovely gem example of this date.

Lot 360
1808 Capped Bust Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A knockout gem of this date! The luster is bright and fresh and the coin possess a lovely satiny appearance. The strike is sharp too, with full curls on Liberty, and none of the usual weakness seen on the upper curls or on the wing feathers on the eagle. Naturally, the surfaces are pristine and show only faint signs of handling. Delicate gold toning has formed around the periphery of both sides, but the coin remains mostly white and untoned elsewhere. A later die state with a bisecting vertical crack through the 0 of the date through Liberty and out her cap through the B of LIBERTY to the rim above, which adds interest to the collector. Both dies show light clash marks as well. John Reich's signature notched star is present in the usual location, the final star right of the date, with the outer point with a notch cut out of it. This notched star is believed to have been Reich's "signature" for the dies he engraved, as no initials were allowed (probably a mint policy) at the time on dies.
Remarkably, a this date has been found in gem condition, in fact PCGS has graded 5 coins as MS-65 so far of this date, and even more remarkable, there are 6 more graded higher (best MS-67). A gem of the first water and worthy of a top notch type or date collection.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

1812 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 2 over 1. Large 8. MS-60. Here is a problem coin, first off, it is toned with magnificent and highly desirable golds, blues and reds on both sides over luster in the fields, however; there are scattered scratches and digs on both sides. Still appealing, but a coin a prospective buyer should study carefully, as the marks are well beyond normal circulation marks, but the coin is still appealing for its color.

1823 Capped Bust Half Dollar. MS-60 or better. Flashy and bright, with copious luster and a delicate layer of gold starting to form. The fields and surfaces are very fresh, and we expect this coin to bring a premium for the eye appeal. A common variety, but uncommon this nice.

Lot 363
1825 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-67. A magnificent gem example with surfaces that are only surpassed by the more stunning toning on both sides! This coin is simply alive with the fire of mint luster which dances beneath the artist's palette of blues, golds and greens on both sides. Mostly blue on the obverse, while the reverse sports an incredible array of blue, gold and red with some white near the center on the eagle. A coin which anyone can appreciate for its peacock like display, but few could ever hope to acquire such a gem. In top grades like this, it doesn't really matter than this is a scarce die variety, but that just adds more icing on the cake. NGC has graded only 3 examples of this date as such, with none graded higher. One of the highlights of this sale, and we anticipate active bidding when it crosses the block.
Estimated Value $16,000-UP.

1839-O Capped Bust Half Dollar. MS-63. Dusky steel gray toning over bright luster in the fields. Sharply struck by the dies on this very early issue from the New Orleans Branch Mint. Apparently the equipment was new, and the steam coining press produced coins that boast full stars and curls, as well as sharp details on the reverse eagle. In fact, the dies had worked so hard, that several peripheral cracks can be seen on each die, and most examples of this date have these cracks. The surfaces have some hidden hairlines and we note a very minor pin scratch swirling around in the curls above Liberty's temple. Always a popular date with collectors for the unusual obverse mintmark and short-lived type coin.

1863-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. One of the very finest known of this mid Civil War date. This particular coin boasts lovely gold toning with a touch of blue around the periphery, while the centers are mostly white. The strike is sharp at the centers, and the only weakness we see is located on the rim of the lower reverse where the dentils are not fully defined. On the reverse, the "S" mintmark is broken at the top, as is normal for this date. NGC has graded only 2 this high, and PCGS has graded just one as MS-65, and neither service has graded any higher, comfirming that this is likely one of the finest known.

1873-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-64. A very curious population report on this date, PCGS has graded only 6 in mint state, 4 as MS-64 as seen here, and just 2 others, both MS-65 above. There are now mint state coins graded by them in lower grades. This one boasts abundant satiny luster and very clean surfaces. We note a few faint hairlines around the mintmark, but this one certainly has the eye appeal and surface quality seen on many gems of this series.
