A revolution occured in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sol in 1835, resulting in the establishment, however brief, of the Republic of Piratini. All coins circulating in the province were countermarked wtih various symbols, mostly of the clasped hands and Liberty pole and cap design. The 1835-dated variety of countermark offered in this lot is considered by many specialists to be a fantasy.
