1854-O. NGC graded EF-45. Mostly untoned. Always popular as the only "O" mint $3.00 gold coin struck. In 1854 the $3 gold coin was launched with high hopes and even the branch mints of Dahlonega and New Orleans issued this new denomination in 1854. Sadly, this was the first and only New Orleans issue struck, Charlotte never coined this denomination, and Dahlonega also issued $3 gold coins in just 1854. Curiously, the San Francisco Mint began issuing $3 coins in 1855, but these were quite a hit or miss for annual production for this denomination. A mere 24,000 minted (PCGS # 7971) Estimated Value $2,500 - UP

1884. PCGS PR Genuine, altered surfaces. UNC Detail. Still a decent untoned proof example and boldly struck, with shimmering reflectivity in the fields and frosty devices. Some minor handling marks account for the qualifier from PCGS along with some attempt to improve the overall appearance, mostly on the obverse and it should be called Proof-55. Only 106 proofs struck for this low mintage date (PCGS # 8048) Estimated Value $2,500 - UP

Lot 387
1885. PCGS Genuine, Cleaned-AU Detail. Low mintage date as only 800 were struck. Lightly toned with semi reflective fields on both sides. We feel this coin should have graded AU-53 at a minimum! The current level of what is called "cleaned" by the grading services today seems to disqualify the vast majority of coins from straight-graded holders. In the past no such qualifier would have been seen as fit for this coin, which is a prized rarity and in strong collector demand for its tiny mintage and limited availability and whatever evidence is noted of cleaning, is minute at best (PCGS # 8007) Estimated Value $2,000 - UP
