1864 CSA Special Order No. 141 issued in Houston, TX. After the fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and Port Hudson, LA on July 9, 1863, Union forces controlled the entirety of the Mississippi River, effectively cutting the Conferacy in half. These documents detail one aspect of the issues the Confederacy faced by not having current funds to pay soldiers based in Houston, TX in Mid-1864. As best we can decipher, the handwritten document dated May 20, 1864 reads, "It having been determined by the Department that no pay funds will be sent to this District until the new issue is received. Maj Thompson Harrison, AQM Chief Paymaster of the District is hereby authorized to borrow a sufficient amount of the present currency to pay off those Troops who desire it. The money borrowed to be returned as soon as the new issue is received. By Command of Maj Gen Magruder, J.E. Slaughter, Brig Genl & Chief of Staff." The second document is a receipt for $100,000 that said Major Harrison is borrowing until a time the new issue of currency arrives, if at all. A third partial sheet of lined paper details some addition but no details or date to its function. Estimated Value $750 - UP

1862. $100. Issued at Houston, TX. Fr-T-40. Noted on back is "Issued Houston, TX / November 29, 1862". This statement assisted with how to compute the interest earned at 2 Cents per day. Below that statement is a typically seen stamp of "Interest Paid / To 1 January, 1864/5", showing that the interest was collected at the end of each year. Very Fine. Estimated Value $300 - UP
