Pair of Royal Dux Bohemia Figurines. Early 20th century. Rustic Shepherd and Shepherdess, he is 12", she is 11½" tall. Both pieces have the requisite pink triangle impressed with "Royal Dux Bohemia" and the "E" impressed acorn, indicating production between 1900 and 1914. Additional marks on the shepherd: "351" (impressed) and "37" (painted -- probably the decorator's mark). Marks on the shepherdess: "352 / 67" (impressed) and "37" (painted). A minor scuff on the shepherd's arm and she lacks her crook, otherwise fine condition.

Royal Dux Bohemia produced some of the highest quality, most distinctive porcelain figures of the early 20th century and the pieces offered here are no exception. Delicately colored portrayals of a Classical shepherd and his lovely assistant, both clad in togas and sheepskin (hers a mite more revealing); the details and the decorator's artful use of matte and glossy finishes has resulted in lovely examples of the Dux craftsmen's skill.

Gibson, Charles Dana and Remington, Frederick. Set of four color reproductions of Charles Dana Gibson works and from Frederic Remington, presented in a large folder. Sheet size: 14 x 19½". Image size: 9½ x 11½". The folder shows water damage at the crease and the resulting stains, which would be easily matted out, have affected the border edge of all eight prints. Gibson's "Reciprocity" has superficial soiling and would benefit from a gentle cleaning. Each piece is labeled with a small, decorative paper tag noting "Artist's Proof", all of which have toned. Overall, condition ranges from good to very good.

Likely issued early in the 20th century (with copyrights ranging from 1902-1907), these are eight beautiful examples from two of America's best-known artists. We must confess to curiosity about the decision that grouped Gibson's square-jawed men and elegantly beautiful women with Remington's energetic depictions of life on the frontier… In any case, this group offers a window on popular art of the early 1900s.
Estimated Value $125 - 150.

H.M.S. Cambrian. Old Aquatint Print. Artist: N.M. Condy. Engraver: E. Duncan. 18½ x 14½", handsomely matted and framed to 25½ x 21½". Nine expertly repaired small tears at bottom edge. Not examined out of frame, appears to be in fine condition.

Printed in the lower margin: "H.M.S. Cambrian, 36 Guns / This Print is respectfully dedicated by permission to Sir William Symonds, Surveyor of the Navy, / by his obliged and very obedient Servant NM Condy." Symonds, Inspector and Architect of the Royal Navy, spent much of the early and mid-19th century modifying ship design to meet the needs of a faster, more agile Navy. The H.M.S. Cambrian was probably one of the ships built or refitted under Symonds' command. A lovely piece, of a desirable maritime motif, enhanced by the framing.

One of the greatest poster artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he has been called the Norman Rockwell of the 1890s. Known for creating realistic images of everyday life, Steinlen often used his wife, daughter, and a family of cats as models for his work. His most notable poster entitled "Chat Noir" was an advertisement for a cafè of the same name and features a sassy black cat.

Persian Antique Copper Bowl, with Engraved Scenes of the Hunt. Robust footed bowl of deep shape with out-turned rim resembling an inverted bell. The exterior walls are richly ornamented with repousee and engraved scene depicting a youthful hunter on horse, chasing a pair of hinds. The horseman is repeated three times amid changing scenery. Set in this frieze, a cartouche with Nastaliq inscription. Above, an elaborate border of flowers and trefoils. Perhaps a scene depicting Rustam, one of the legendary principles in the Shah-nameh. Interior of bowl tinned, with traces of tinning on the exterior. Width: 5-1/4"; Height: 3". An attractive objet d'art.

The Shah-nameh, "Book of Kings", is the celebrated work of the Persian epic poet Ferdowsi, in which the Persian national epic found its final and enduring form. The Shah-nameh is a poem of nearly 60,000 verses, mainly based on the Khvatay-namak, a history of the kings of Persia in Pahlavi (Middle Persian), from mythical times down to the 7th century. Ferdowsi committed the various epic and literary traditions to verse, and updated the story to the downfall of the Pre-Islamic Sasanid empire (mid-7th century). For nearly 1,000 years this epic poem has remained one of the most popular works in the Persian-speaking world. In addition, the work has inspired and influenced a large repertoire of representational art in Persia, and elsewhere in Asia, over the centuries.

Prisoner of War Postcards and ID tags. Lot of ten postcards mailed from prisoner of war camps, two postal receipts for mailing to POW camps, two work camp or prisoner of war camp metal badges and two SS identification badges. The postcards, addressed to Paris, Bialystok, Krakow, among other cities, are stamped with various "approved by censor" marks. One assumes these are typical of many such letters, containing concerns about family welfare and the like. A letter from a French prisoner to his mother reveals other worries, "…The news of the bombardment of Paris by the RAF has caused much emotion here…the bombardment confirms for me the total ineptitude of the British in military matters…I worry about the conduct of the war…" The metal badges have embossed legends, one is from Stalag 344, another from a work camp run by the SS and the other two from SS battalions.

Interesting and Colorful Lot of Third Reich Postal Items. Among the items are two commemorative postal covers, one cancelled in Kattowitz and the other from Lamsdorf, show the various military forces and their equipment valiantly displayed to their propagandistic best. One set apparently for Germany itself, the stamps inscribed as "Deutches Reich," the other for occupied or "reacquired" territories and denoted as "Gross Deutches Reich." Also, a Polish mail sticker, postally cancelled, showing a red-starred Russian barbarian tearing Christ from the cross, and labeled "Antichrist = Bolshevik." Other items include: an unused telegram envelope with cellophane window; and a similar official business envelope, cancelled in Breslau. On a more human level, a hand drawn Mother's Day card from a border guard in Saarbrucken -- a heartfelt work of nâive art, expressing "joy and bliss" to his mother. Also a photograph of a stalwart female postal employee, wearing Reich's patches and badge on her uniform. Interestingly, an attempt was made to ink out the swastikas and those emblems. Lastly, a good-sized folded map showing the numerical codes for the postal zones in the expanding Reich (ca. 1944). Items mostly letter or postcard size. Map, about 36" x 48". Small items intact, and in fine to very fine condition. Map show modest use, but with some heavy fold marks, and a little taped repairs. Worth a close look. Some striking material here.

Lot of Nazi Propoganda. Lot of five. Three issues of the Soldaten Zeitung, Krakow edition, from October 1939. Published just weeks after the surrender of Poland, these issues are full of the expected propaganda and reports of Nazi successes in Wilna as well as various aspects of international reaction to Nazi movements. Toning, some tears, very good condition, overall. The last two items in this lot are books published by the Niebelungen Publishers, Berlin. The first, Raubstaat Polen, was published in 1939 immediately after the invasion of Poland. Using Nazi world view to justify the invasion, the book is obvious propaganda propagating the idea of "Lebensraum" and the injustice of the Versailles Treaty. Foxing and cover wear/soil, otherwise good to very good condition. The second, Warum Krieg mit Stalin?, published shortly after the invasion of the Soviet Union in June of 1941, serves much the same function -- relaying Nazi justifications for the invasion and stressing the greater good of the Nazi policy (an interesting section of the book relates how horrible the Soviets invasion of Finland was, ignoring the fact that at the same time the Nazis were subjugating Poland). Foxing and cover wear/soil, some paper loss at spine; good condition.
