New Zealand. 'Waitangi' Crown, 1935. Dav-433; KM-6. George V. The king of Great Britain, and emperor of its colonies and dominions, is depicted facing left, wearing a large crown and royal robes. It is one of the more splendid portraits made for colonial coins. On the reverse we see images of a Maori chief and William Hobson shaking hands, agreeing to the terms of the Treaty of Waitangi, a symbolic crown above their heads and the name of the place where the treaty was signed in the exergue below. Pop 1; The Finest Cameo graded at PCGS. This coin is photo in the PCGS Pop Report. PCGS graded Proof 64+ Cameo. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP
Issued in the year of George V's Silver Jubilee, this beautiful commemorative crown was struck for collectors. The proof mintage was a mere 364 pieces (another 764 coins were minted as normal coins, not proofs). Always popular and treasured, this royal coin offers a delightfully clear image of the famous treaty agreed to by the native Maori tribal people and Hobson, the first governor of the Auckland Settlement, which became New Zealand. Waitangi was a location (now a national park) in the Bay of Islands. It was there that the treaty was signed in February 1840. Two British missionaries translated the English document into the Maori language, which was read and debated by Maori leaders before being signed by 40 chiefs. Copies were then sent around the territory, gaining another 500 signatures. British sovereignty was formally proclaimed on 21 May 1840. Formerly dependent largely on money made for Australia, the new Dominion (so named as of September 1907) issued its first coinage in 1933-but this was its first crown, with a face value of 5 shillings, the same standard as in England. You will probably never find a more beautiful example.
